HALFWAY MARCH 2008
“Any news?” Is the first question Nora asks, when she sees Tommy. Tommy shakes his head and he wrings his hands.
“Nothing. They don’t tell my anything. I’m so scared. I hope Jules is alright.” At that moment the lift door opens and Justin comes in, followed by a man Tommy doesn’t recognize.
“Is Julia alright?” Justin’s question gets replied by a shrug from Tommy. He doesn’t know. “I’m sorry, this is Jordan, my friend, he drove me here. He thought I might hurt myself by trying to get here as soon as I could.”
“Thanks.” Nora says to Jordan, knowing that Jordan isn’t only Justin’s friend.
“Kevin was in a hotel, he’s on his way over here too.” Jordan says and vaguely Tommy wonders why Jordan knows where Kevin is, but then he hears Nora’s say.
“It’s alright... William is in Ojai, not picking up his phone. Kitty is not answering either, she has her phone switched off.”
Again, Tommy cannot help but wonder what business this is of Jordan’s? Sarah now enters as well. Did Nora call the entire family? Sarah hugs Justin, Jordan and then Nora to end up at Tommy.
“How is she?” Her looks very concerned.
“I don’t know yet. They don’t tell me anything.” That is when Kevin enters as well. He immediately goes to Tommy and hugs him.
“What happened?” But before Tommy can answer, Nora wonders,
“Kevin, where’s ...?”
“At the hotel.” Kevin replies with a warning frown. Of course, Tommy doesn’t know, Nora now remembers. Kevin turns to Tommy again. “Sorry, for the domestic information. Back to you and Julia. What happened? Is everything alright with her? With the baby? When Jordan called it sounded kind of serious?”
“She woke me up... Complained about pain... There was blood on the sheets.... I... The ambulance got her here, I have no idea how long she’s been in there. It feels like days! And nobody tells me anything...” The panic in Tommy’s eyes is heart-breaking and Kevin holds him in a tight hug. And Tommy lets it happen.
Surprised, Sarah, Justin and Nora stare at Tommy and Kevin. The two were never close, They didn’t hate each other, they just had nothing much to say to each other either. So this sudden brotherly affection takes them by surprise.
“Kev, what if she loses the baby?”
“I don’t know.” Kevin replies. “I guess, you’ll have to be strong for the both of you, brother. If Julia loses the baby, she’s going to need you more than ever.”
Tommy takes a deep breath. He knows Kevin is right. He has to be strong. For Julia.
“There’s a doctor coming our way.” Kevin warns and Tommy turns around.
“Can I speak with you? Alone.”
“Yeah, sorry. We’re family. A tight family. Kind of like a vice.” Tommy answers.
“Mr. Walker, we’re sorry. We did everything we could, but the baby didn’t make it. Your wife had a miscarriage.”
“H... how’s Julia, ... my wife.”
“Under the circumstances? She’ll be alright physically. Mentally.... I don’t know.”
Tommy nods that he understands. He cannot think of anything else to ask. He knows it’s heartless, but his most important worry right now is Julia and not the loss of the baby.
“Can you tell us what went wrong? Will it affect another pregnancy as well?”
“Too soon to tell, we keep her here and examine her. Then we can give you more information.”
Kevin closes the door to the hotel and quietly enters the bedroom. It’s nearly five in the morning. He’s exhausted and he is glad he has the entire weekend off, so that he can sleep in a bit. No matter how careful he is, he still wakes up Scotty.
“Hey... What happened?” Scotty asks, his voice sleepy.
“Julia... She lost the baby.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. I understand she wanted the child very badly.”
“Yes, she did....” Kevin remains quiet for a few seconds, then he slips between Scotty’s arms to press his face to Scotty’s chest. Automatically and still half asleep Scotty caresses his hair.
“The baby wasn’t Tommy’s.” Kevin says quietly and, in shock, Scotty stops the motion of his hand. Kevin sighs disappointed. ”She had a one-night thing with some ex-boyfriend from way back when she was a teenager.”
“Oh, my God. How did Tommy find out about it?”
“She got pregnant.”
“Wasn’t that what Tommy and she were planning to do?”
“Yes, except.... Tommy’s sterile.”
“I see the problem.” Scotty answers dryly.
“Tommy is SO worried about her.”
“I can imagine... Kev, was that the secret you didn’t want to talk about the other day?”
“Yes, I still cannot understand what Julia did. She and Tommy love each other so much.”
“She made a mistake.”
“Is that what you would say, if it were me?”
“No,... I’d kill you if you cheat on me.” Scotty grins. “Why? Do you plan to cheat on me?”
“No. Never. I love you too much.” Kevin replies simply and honestly.
“Now there is the only correct answer...”
Nora falls backwards on her bed. She’s too tired to get undressed. It would be pointless anyway, she has to get up in three hours to get ready for a charity-meeting. Lying on her back, she dials William’s number again, but no one answers. Is William alright? Did he just put his phone in a place where he can’t hear it ring?
Once again, she wonders what is so important in Ojai these days that he needs to be there all the time. This is the third time this month that he spends a few days there. She wraps her arms around her pillow and tries to find the right position to rest her head, realizing that his being gone is not what bothers her.
It’s the fact that no one, not even her, really missed him. Even Tommy was now turning to Kevin, who lately seemed to be the person to go to. He is slowly replacing William. Nora has to recognize all her children are moving away from William. And that makes her feel uncomfortable, because they are also distancing themselves from HER.
Kevin, because of what happened to Scotty. Justin due to Fawn’s death and now Tommy, for ... why actually? Kitty hasn’t shown her face since the argument they had early March. And Sarah is moving along with her own life. Even the standard Thursday-evening-get-togethers were not happening anymore, because everyone is ‘too busy’.
But how can SHE bridge the gap between Kevin and William, when the two are fundamentally too different? How can she makes things better between Justin and William, if William simply cannot see that he had no right to be so cold about Fawn? And should she really be concerned about Kitty and William? Those two always find their way to each other again.
She cannot begin to understand what went wrong between William and Tommy. From all her children Tommy was the most dedicated to William. What went wrong? She wonders if she should throw another party. For no particular reason. Where Kevin can tell everyone about Scotty. And maybe Justin and William can talk.
Once Julia feels better of course, Tommy’s first priority should be with her. It would be wonderful to see Paige and Cooper play in the pool again. Maybe she should ask Joe if he wanted to play some music. It’s been too long since she heard him play. She could invite Kitty and not put pressure on her to be alone with William ... and.... Nora is asleep.
Joe wakes up, when Sarah inadvertently kicks him in the shins. He makes a painful sound, but Sarah doesn’t apologise, she’s too tired and too sad for Julia. She pulls the blanket over her head and falls asleep almost immediately. Joe, however, is awake now and he cannot get his sleep back that easily.
He slips out of bed, drinks some water, but when he returns he sees that Sarah is in the middle of the bed, taking up almost all the available space. He looks at her. To him, she’s still the prettiest woman ever. He fell in love with her years ago and he never stopped loving her.
Problem is, she seems to have stopped loving him and he doesn´t know how long he can still take it. Noreen has offered him to go on tour with her and her band and the more he thinks about it, the more appealing it becomes to get out of this house and away from this loveless marriage.
He grabs his pillow and goes downstairs, where he lies down on the couch. He prefers to be there. Alone. It´s better than lying next to the woman he loves and feel that they might as well be sleeping in different states, because she´s just not there, not even when she´s a few inches away from him.
END OF PART 42SNEAK PEEK FOR PART 43
"I’ve been trying to reach William, but he hasn’t answered so far. I doubt he’s on his way back from Ojai. I’ve been thinking.... maybe the two of you want to drop by at the hospital?"
