EARLY MARCH 2008
Jonathan waits impatiently. Where is Kitty? The wedding starts at 2 o’clock. She should have been here twenty minutes ago. He paces up and down. Where is she? His phone rings. It’s Kitty.
“Jonathan. I’m sorry. I can’t make it.”
“Why not? Stuck in traffic? Honey, just let me know how late you’ll get here.”
“Not at all…. I’ve changed my mind. I’m going back to LA. Our wedding is off.”
“I’ve thought about it long and hard. I don’t want it.”
“Kitty! You can’t be serious! Where are you?”
“At the airport. I’m leaving.”
“I got to go. I have to go on board. They just called.”
Jonathan calls Kitty’s name again, but the communication is broken. In shock, he stares at his phone. But he cannot think about Kitty’s words for long. There is a loud cheer when a car stops in front of the church and the couple about to be wed, friends of Jonathan’s, step out of the car.
Jonathan really wonders if she seriously means to cancel their own wedding a few days before the ceremony, but he has to concentrate on the couple that just got out of the car. Whatever Kitty is talking about, it will have to wait until after the ceremony. And after Jonathan flies to LA to wring Kitty’s neck.
“Hey, Jordan.” Justin starts when Jordan opens the door of his apartment.
“Justin?... What a surprise?” Jordan replies hesitantly.
“I… uh… got a call. I’m asked for an interview to med school. They aren’t sure they want to take me in, because of my drugs past, but .. they want to at least talk to me.
It is, so far, the only one who called me back. … I needed to tell someone and Kevin and Scotty are both working and… I thought of you… You’re a friend of Kevin and Scotty. And I don’t really have any friends left…. ” Justin fumbles with his keys and Jordan melts. He likes how Justin is reaching out to him.
“I thought you’d first call your mom.” Jordan suggests.
“Nah, she’ll get all psyched. Knowing her she will probably call the school and insist that they take me or else…” Justin grins.
“Come in… As you can see, I’ve made a few changes.”
Justin looks at the huge table in the middle of the room.
“This is my control panel.” Jordan grins. “From here I can study, while I watch watch tv.” He points at his tv on the wall. “And listen to music at the same time.” He now points at his stereo in the corner of the room.
“Wow. Loud. Noisy.”
“Beats the silence. I…. I don’t like the silence. I guess, I miss having someone to talk to.”
“Well, at least, you have an apartment.” Justin sighs.
“You could get one too.”
“Yes and no. I don’t like living alone in an apartment with my two demons ‘Booze’ and ‘Dope’. I couldn’t return to the place, where I lived with Fawn. Too many bad memories. I don’t want to live with mom and dad anymore. Dad said some things about Fawn I haven’t even begun to forgive him for, let alone forget about.
And I’m feeling more and more that I’m intruding on Kevin and Scotty…. No, they would never say that. They both love me. I love them. They’ve been terrific. But, hello, they are newlyweds… The walls are not that thick. I can hear them through the wall and I get annoyed by it.”
“You have problems with two gay men making love?” Jordan now asks.
“No. Not at all. It’s fine with me. Whatever makes Kevin happy. But, look at me. I’m 27. I’m in the most important years of my life. I’m a veteran, not so bad looking, enough money, I think I’m funny… I should be able to get any girl I want.
My brother, on the other hand, is gay, 33 years old, which basically makes you ancient, scores himself the cutest guy who cooks heavenly and the two of them…” Justin copies the sound the squeaking bed makes. “And I mean, nearly every night. There is something really wrong with this picture.”
“Yeah, life sometimes sucks….” Jordan laughs out loud, seeing Justin’s point of view very clearly. “You know, why don’t you join me for dinner? I’m not as good a cook as Scotty, but I master the art of warming up canned food.”
“What? No frozen dinners?” Justin jokes.
“Freezer broke. Need to buy another one.” Jordan says from the kitchen.
“I have a freezer.” Justin mumbles and Jordan looks at him.
“Justin,… how would you like to move in here?”
“Yes. I have a house, no freezer. You have a freezer, no house. If we would add the two together, we would have a freezer and a house between the two of us. We both hate to be alone, but are not involved with someone…. Or with each other. You can take one of the guest-rooms… I have more space than I need… That is, if you don’t mind living in one house with someone who’s gay.”
“I have years of practice with that… First Kevin and now Kevin/Scotty. Just as long you remember that I’m straight.”
“I know. You’re not my type anyway.” Jordan laughs.
“Then it looks as if we have ourselves a deal.” Justin now agrees.
THE NEXT DAY
“Ah, a well deserved table of Chinese food.” Scotty sighs, as he looks at all the small boxes on Jordan’s table.
“Thank you, guys, for all your help. It was certainly easier to carry everything down here, with the four of us.” Justin replies.
“You’re welcome, bro.” Kevin says. “I’m sad to see you go though. I liked having you at our loft.”
“Thanks, Kevin. I’m so grateful for everything that you and Scotty have done for me. You’ve both been amazing, but I think it’s about time for a change for me.”
“Just know, that if this doesn’t work, you can always come back upstairs.” Scotty says and Justin gives him a grateful look.
“I’m sure Jordan and I can work things out between us.”
“Yes, Jordan is not the most difficult person to live with.” Scotty admits.
At that moment Kevin’s phone rings and he frowns when he sees who’s calling.
“Kit? Why would she call you and not Tommy??” Justin asks.
“Don’t know. One way to find out though… Hi, Kitty….”
Kevin listens quietly while the voice on the other side of the line is clearly hysterical.
“What is going on?” Justin whispers. Kevin shakes his head and raises his hand to sign Justin to be quiet. Obviously there is something big going on, because Kevin’s expressive face shows him going from surprise, to concern, to a frown that Justin cannot read.
“Yes, I see the problem… but, what do you want me to do?... No, I’m sorry, you can’t stay with me. Justin is still at my place…. With your bad back, the couch is not an option. No, I’m not going to ask Justin to sleep on the couch, so you can sleep in my guest-room.
I’m sorry, sis. You’re the one who leaves her husband to be at the altar, you deal with it…. I’m not going to put myself in the middle of your argument with Mom and Dad about this. I know how they both feel about Jonathan and neither of them will be too happy with your decision to just run away.”
Justin’s looks at Kevin with open mouth, surprised by two things. Kitty’s running out on Jonathan, but also Kevin’s refusal to help Kitty.
“I’m sorry, Kit, you’re on your own in this one… Bye.”
“That was rather…rude?” Scotty asks carefully.
“Yes. I mean, you’d help Sarah, Tommy or me in a heart-beat, why not Kitty?” Justin’s questions surprises Kevin.
“Because she’s Kitty.”
“You need to give a better reason.” Justin replies.
“Because she’s Kitty is the only answer. Daddy’s little girl, Daddy’s little princess, Daddy’s favorite… Daddy’s snitch. Who do you think will be the first person she’ll run to, if she discovers Scotty and I are married? Especially if she just failed majorly by not wanting to get married to Daddy’s favorite choice for a Republican son-in-law?”
“…. Dad…” Justin nods.
“It’s not that I don’t want to help her. It would not be wise to do so…. And, alright, I don’t want to either. Over the years she turned into a selfish bitch, who only bothered to get in touch with one of us if she needed something.
The only reason she called me, is because she knows that mom and dad, but also Tommy are going to raise hell over her dumping Jonathan.”
“And Sarah, you and me wouldn’t?” Justin asks.
“Come on… Do you really care? Are you heart-broken that they are through?”
“No.” Justin replies honestly.
“Neither am I. Jonathan was a nice guy, but could you really see him married to Kitty, our not so favorite shark? … Anyway, it’s her problem, and there’s no way, I’m going to let her make it my problem.”
