***** END OF FEBRUARY 2008
Nora chases the kids to their rooms. Paige has homework, Cooper has a friend coming over to play. She hangs up Paige’s coat, wondering if she’ll ever learn that the floor is not a coat-hanger. There’s a clanging noise and Nora sees the keys for Paige ‘s bike on the floor. Luckily she knows that Sarah has a small cabinet, where she keeps all her keys.
Nora hangs up the keys without further thought, until she sees a familiar key. It’s the spare-key to Kevin’s loft. She had to give to him before Christmas, but she never got it back. Why is it with Sarah? She sighs once again. What is wrong with her kids lately? Why is Sarah suddenly Kevin’s confident? Why did Justin go to Kevin?
She had always felt this divide in her children. There was Tommy and Kitty on one side and there was Sarah and Kevin on the other. Somewhere when Justin was 7 or 8 years old, he had spontaneously turned to Kevin and that had never really changed. Over the years her children had drawn together and moved apart in different directions.
But now suddenly the Sarah-Kevin-Justin alliance is back. Not that she’s complaining. She is happy with how well Kevin caught Justin earlier this month. He was there for Justin and she is pleased with how well Justin is doing. She saw him again yesterday and he looked amazing.
Alright, maybe not amazing, but amazingly better than he had these last few weeks at her house and slowly but surely more and more of Justin’s possessions leave her house in the direction of Kevin’s loft. But that is fine, because Justin is fine.
She wishes there was something she can do for Kevin in return, but she cannot think of anything. He had withdrawn from her and she really has no idea what is going on his life or what it is he could possibly want. Her thoughts get interrupted as Cooper and his friend, Sam, run by on their way to the garden.
Nora shakes her head. Boys! She automatically folds Sarah’s laundry. It’s like second nature. She knows that Joe and Sarah can do this. They don’t expect
her to do house-hold chores, while she’s babysitting, but with the kids busy, her own busy body can’t stop. She folds another towel and then suddenly she has a brilliant plan!
She will go over to Kevin’s and clean up his place. She knows what those bachelors are like. She’s sure he will appreciate coming home to a clean loft for once. Especially with Justin in the house as well. She starts to mentally make a list of what she’s supposed to bring with her, starting with the key.
For a brief moment she wonders if she should tell Sarah that she takes the key with her, but realizing that the newly reignited relationship might make Sarah drop a hint to Kevin, makes her change her mind. She wants it to be a surprise for Kevin. Finally feeling that she can do something in return, she goes back to folding the laundry, humming a song.
Scotty quietly creeps into the bedroom, grateful that Kevin left one of the little nightlights on, but though it makes him see something, it doesn’t help him see everything
and in passing he knocks over a little table with Kevin’s files and books. The crashing noise wakes Kevin.
“Oh, it’s you.” He says.
“Sorry, I was trying to be quiet, but there’s not enough room in here to swing a cat."
“Did you say ‘swing a cat’?”
“Where I come from cats sometimes get swung.”
“That’s cruelty to animals.” Kevin huffs still half asleep.
“Didn’t say I was doing the swinging.”
“No, you just debone quails or chicken.”
“Considering that you eat them, you have no right to talk.”
“Point taken… It’s nearly three! You’re so late.”
“Party lasted longer than expected.”
“Should I let you sleep in?”
“No! I have to study tomorrow morning. Will you put the alarm at 9 o’clock for me?
“Sure. Nine.” Kevin replies, feeling Scotty sits down on the bed next to him and Kevin watches him strip himself of all his clothes.
“I should shower.” Scotty says, not entirely convincing.
“Yes, you should.” Kevin replies, pulling Scotty into his arms and kissing him. Scotty lies down, stretches his back and he makes a sound as if it hurts. Kevin snuggles up close to Scotty. He hears the little laughter from Scotty’s lips followed by a warning “Kevin”, to indicate that he is not in the mood.
Kevin doesn’t care, neither is he, but he is slightly amused by the recognition that he will sleep better, knowing Scotty is home, safe and sound. Scotty closes his eyes. Just for a second. He feels Kevin’s hand softly caress his belly, so tenderly. He should get really aroused by this and make love to his husband, but all it does is make him fall asleep with a content sigh.
Nora watches the clock in her car. Nearly nine. Kevin should be at the office. Justin should be at his work at the army-recruitment office. She has the place to herself. Good. Still satisfied with her little plan, she goes upstairs carrying her bucket with cleaning chemicals, though she assumes that Kevin will have some of his own.
She searches for the place, feeling slightly guilty that she hasn’t been back here since she helped Kevin move in, a little over a year ago. Ah, there it is, number 507. She quietly opens the door to Kevin’s loft. The first thing she notices is how clean the place is. It’s a bit of a shock.
Not that Kevin was as bad as Justin or Tommy use to be, but she had expected… more
… She feels a bit disappointed, knowing that any cleaning she will do, will probably not have much effect. It will hardly be noticed. She goes to the kitchen, expecting a full sink, instead there are only two cups on the table.
She is about to turn away when there’s a pinging noise and to her surprise it’s the timer on Kevin’s coffee-machine. It’s set at nine o’clock. She feels weird. Was he expecting her? Had he found out? Had Sarah missed the key? At that moment, she gets an even bigger scare when she hears a phone ring in the bedroom.
She laughs at herself for her own shocked reaction. So, someone is calling Kevin, he has an answering machine…. Silly her. That is when she hears a noise in the bedroom. The phone is being picked up. Still holding the bucket closely against her, she moves to the hall separating the bedroom and the living-room.
She hears a familiar voice, but not Kevin’s:
“Hey!.. Yes…. Thanks for the alarm… Yes, I’m awake now… I’ll make some coffee and then start studying…. You did? Aww, that is sweet. Coffee always tastes better when you prepare it.”
Peeking in, she sees a man in Kevin’s bed. She can only see his back, because he is on his stomach, talking to someone on the phone. She can clearly see his shape under the thin sheet that is covering him, as the blanket lies at the foot of the bed. A teasing laughter brings her back to the conversation.
“Kevin? Thanks for calling, there is nothing sexier than waking up, with your voice so close to my ear…. Now, if only I had you
here….” Laughter. Obviously Kevin says something funny. “Alright… I’ll let you do your work… under protest… but tonight, I will show you my gratitude….”
Laughter again and Nora feels weird as the realization sinks in that Kevin has a boy-friend he didn’t tell her about. Someone who sleeps at Kevin’s place and is obviously important enough that Kevin calls to wake him up and prepares the coffee for him and the man lives at his place.
Unaware that behind him his mother-in-law is trying to piece together the information she gets, Scotty hangs up the phone, a broad smile on his face. God, Kevin’s voice is so sexy on the phone. He loves how caring Kevin is to him. It’s those small little things by which he shows his love for Scotty that make Scotty feel so cherished.
But first things first and that means a shower before he can get coffee. And with that idea, Scotty shoves away the sheets and gets up. He hears a little squeak followed by the sound of something heavy falling. He turns to the sound and is face to face with a stunned Nora, who looks in total shock at Scotty’s naked body.
“Mrs Walker!” Scotty screams horrified, yanking the sheets of the bed to cover himself and it’s only when Scotty calls out her name that Nora can breathe again and that she thinks to turn away.
“Oh, my god!” Nora says, clearly shocked. Her hand covers her mouth to prevent herself from going for something more blasphemous.
But after a few deep breaths she turns around and angrily yells’
“You scared the hell out of me! What are you doing here?”
“This is my
are the one who is not supposed to be here. ... And I scared you? You are the one breaking in, in our loft.”
“I am not ‘breaking in’.” Nora denies.
“Then how did
you get in?”
“I used the key.”
“Can’t. Kevin confiscated your key.” Scotty replies immediately and with certainty.
“Sarah’s copy.” Nora fires back.
“And she just gave you our
key?” There’s disbelief, because Sarah promised she wouldn’t.
“N..no.. I just ‘borrowed’ it. I saw it hanging with her other keys.” Nora replies less self-confident.
“You took it.. Without her permission?”
“Yes.” Nora is now completely defeated. Scotty shakes his head. He bites his lip wondering what he is supposed to do now. That is when Nora lifts her head and suddenly wonders: “What are you
doing here, Scotty?”
