“I can’t remember the last time I talked this much about myself.” Jason says apologetic, but Scotty waves it away. They decided to go to a French restaurant where the food is good and tasteful, the wine is perfect for the occasion and they are actually having a good time, much to Scotty’s surprise and to Jason’s.
“I am actually enjoying this.” Jason carefully admits. “I was worried about awkward silences between us, but so far, ….”
Scotty bows his head, a bit shy by the compliment…
“… Awkward silence follows.” He then grins with a sparkle of amusement in his eyes. “To tell you the truth, it is so easy, because Kevin told me so much about you, that I can easily come up with questions to ask and keep the conversation going.” Scotty confesses.
“Which obviously explains why I’m talking so much about myself… “ Jason laughs. “But that also gives you the advantage on me, Kevin told me nothing about you…” he stops and his smile fades as he realizes what he just said. He bites his lip, suddenly a bit nervous that he may have offended Scotty. Scotty raises an eyebrow, seeing Jason’s nervous reaction.
“It’s alright.” He says gently. “I know that Kevin didn’t talk much about me. He hardly ever speaks of his exes. It wasn’t until after we were married that he told me what really happened between him and Hank. So ….. but if you have any questions, I’m more than willing to answer them.” Scotty offers.
Jason is a bit surprised by this. Sure, he has questions, he wonders about things, but he is not sure if he should discuss them with Scotty. Basically it doesn’t matter anymore. Kevin broke with him, he’s over Kevin, Kevin is married and happy with Scotty, he doubts Scotty will easily give up on this marriage. It’s really not his concern anymore. And yet…
“I have to admit that I’m curious where you fit in the entire picture. I mean, I went to Malaysia and, granted, I didn’t stay in touch with Kevin, and by the time I did, Kevin told me he was in love with someone else…. Just like that.” Jason snaps his fingers. “And I could not understand what had happened.
I’ve filled in some of the gaps with the things that Robert told me and some information I snagged from Kitty, but in all… I’d like to know what happened here in America, while I was in Malaysia. ”
“So, what do you know, or think to know?”
“From Kitty I heard you were an ex-boyfriend from 2 years ago…?” Jason starts, slightly insecure. Scotty nods.
“Kevin and I were together for about two rollercoaster months.”
“I don’t mean to pry, but what do you mean with that?” Jason asks.
“We met under the wrong circumstances. I had had some bad relationships and was really looking to find out who I was. Kevin had all these issues with William’s death, Holly, the embezzlement, I assume you know about all that?” Jason nods at Scotty’s question. “Our relationship was just a very rocky one. On, off. Fighting, making up. We disagreed a lot, we had things in common.
We just kept making mistakes with each other. I didn’t understand Kevin’s issues, Kevin didn’t get my hang ups… We both tried to impress each other, but only ended up annoying the other. Yes, I take my responsibility in that too. And after two months I eventually called it quits. I couldn’t take it anymore. I loved Kevin, but it was all too much for me. I had to take care of myself first.”
“Then there was one night …. thing? Kitty wasn’t sure what went wrong there, because Kevin seemed happy to see you again, … or so she said.” Jason is not sure how to put it into words.
“My fault, I fear. I knew Chad was gay the moment he introduced himself to me… I just didn’t link Chad and Kevin. I thought, or wanted to think, that they were just friends.”
“And you found out…?”
“The next morning, when Chad called Kevin. God, I felt so stupid. I just never thought about Kevin and Chad…. Well, you know.” Scotty shrugs a bit.
“Someone like Chad being interested in Kevin?”
“Oh. I understand Chad being interested in Kevin. It’s Kevin interest in Chad I don’t get. Kevin never struck me as a guy who went for the superficial beauty.”
“Chad Barry has unknown talents, according to Kevin.”
“Then he hides them very well.” Scotty replies catty and Jason laughs.
“So, did you meet Kevin again after I left?” Jason then asks.
“Yes…. I was almost out of money and ran the risk of losing my job, if I couldn’t get rid of a DUI on my name and I hoped that Kevin could help me. And being the generous man he is, he did.”
“Is that when you …” Jason swallows. “… became lovers?” Scotty shakes his head.
“No, he was in love with you, he said and I respected that. We just had dinner together a few times and then he would drop me off home again or go home while I had to work. All strictly platonic. But because of that Kevin and I actually talked and listened to each other, rather than tried to impress each other. We got to know each other a lot better.”
“When I called him, he told me that you had moved in with him…?”
“Yes, not my finest moment in life. I had my tuition to pay and couldn’t afford the rent anymore, I tried to get my landlady to give me some time, but she wanted the money and she had very little patience or trust and threw me out…. I went from friend to friend and … ended up sleeping in my car.”
“You were homeless?” Jason asks shocked. He cannot imagine what that must have felt like.
“Yes. When Kevin found out, he offered me an air-mattress in the living-room and some sheets and blankets. I was wary to accept, but I figured the air-mattress was better than the backseat of my Ranchero.”
Jason nods slowly, as if he is putting things in perspective in his head.
“Further questions?” Scotty teases and Jason opens his mouth to answer, but then their desserts are brought and whatever Jason wanted to ask gets filed in his mind, because the ice-cream looks delicious and he wants to concentrate on that.
