CHAPTER THREE : NORA : OUR HOUSE

*****

4.20 If you bake it, he will come:
“I knew. I knew you were gay. I think I always knew. I was just waiting for you to find out.” Nora said to Kevin.

*****

“This is my house! And I make the decisions around here!” William yells. He stands tall and seems to be towering over Nora, who looks back at him from across the desk, equally standing up straight and definitely not impressed by her husband’s tallness or his yelling. In fact, his words only serve to infuriate her more.

“Last time I checked, William Walker, this house belongs to the both of us! It is my house just as good as it is yours. And Kevin is our son, yours and mine. And the fact that he is gay is our concern. He was gay yesterday, he is today and he well be tomorrow. With or without your consent.

And whether you like or not, and no matter how hard you’re going to stick your head in the sand or put your fingers in your ears chanting ‘la-la-la-la’ at the top of your voice,… he’ll be gay until the end of his life. Kicking him out, disowning him or ignoring him, won’t serve any other purpose but to make him miserable, but it will never make him straight!”

“And as long as he intends to continue these unnatural ideas of his, he’s not welcome in my house.”
“Well, that’s too bad! Because as long as I’m his mother, the woman who carried him for nine months, gave birth to him and loves him unconditionally, he will be welcome in my house, which just happens to be the same place as your house!”

She crosses her arms and stares at William. He tries to stare back, but with 5 kids to keep line, Nora has much more practice at the ‘stare down’ then William has. She doesn’t budge and she hardly blinks until William looks away and falls back in his chair.
“I don’t want to see him. I… I can’t handle this.”

He suddenly seems so defeated that Nora thaws a little bit. She knows how much it must have taken him to admit to this.
“It’s hard on all of us. We all have to deal with our own prejudices and try to figure this out, but, trust me, as hard as it is on us, it’s even harder on Kevin.”

“I don’t want to lose him. He’s my son. I just don’t understand it. I … just don’t.”
“I don’t understand it either. I don’t get why he’s different from you and Tommy and the other boys around him, but he is and I love him still and he needs to know that he’s safe here. And that we’ll be there for him and that he’ll always be our son.” William shakes his head.

“I can’t.”
“Then let me do it. I can handle it. Deal with this on your time, but … let our son be safe in our house.” She sees that she’s has already won him over, that his current muttering is just the last twitches of a dying argument.

William nods and she leaves the study. At the bottom of the stairs she sits down and takes a deep breath. She cannot remember the last time she fought with her husband, but it was time that she stood her ground. This was her house, her home and her son. And she’d fight anyone who would hurt him. Including William.

THE END

I SO had this image in my head of a show-down between William and Nora. :) Whatever the writers want me to think about William, I believe that he loved Nora.
