Nora holds Kitty’s hand and wipes away some hair. Kitty’s sleep is uneasy and Nora wishes that she could do something about that.
“How is she doing? Did she get some sleep?” Seth asks. Nora shrugs and shakes her head.
“Can’t say. She sleeps, but… I can’t say that this will give Kitty her much needed rest.” Nora replies with regret in her voice.
“Yeah, I know….” Seth sighs. They leave Kitty alone in her hospital-bed and move to the waiting-area, where Seth gets Nora some machine-coffee that Nora hates.
“I’m glad you’re here. And that I’m not …. alone… in this…” Seth’s voice trembles and Nora puts a hand on his arm.
“We’re always here. All you have to do is say that you need me, that you need us.” She says and Seth eyes fill with tears.
“My mom won’t even return my calls. She knows Kitty is here, but … she hasn’t called once to find out how I’m doing.”
“So, nothing is forgiven, huh?” Nora asks, knowing that the relationship between Seth and his mother has taken a turn for the worst since Christmas.
“No. Nothing has changed. Not even the fact that Kitty might be….” He suddenly presses his lips together. “Sorry.”
“… dying?” Nora finishes his sentence instead. He nods with a miserable look on his face, staring at his feet, unable to look at her.
“You have to come to terms with this, Seth. Say the words…. We can tiptoe around the subject, but …. Let’s face it…. Kitty was never been is such bad health before.”
“I wasn’t there the first time… You know, I’ve sat at her bedside, many times, wondering how Robert dealt with it. Bet he was perfect at it, where I’m just falling apart…” Nora is surprised at the young man’s bitterness.
“No. Robert had quite some problems with it too…. He was just as scared as you are now. Afraid to lose Kitty. To lose the mother of his child. To lose his partner. He wasn’t the man to fall to pieces, but he was just as worried as you.
I know that there’s nothing harder to fight than a dead man with a good reputation, but, you have to remember that Robert was just man too. And he may have handled things differently and dealt with his emotions in another way, than you would, but he was still a man. And a fallible one too. He was not perfect.”
She puts her arms around him and Seth quietly gives in to his tears. She holds him close, happy that Seth gives her the chance to offer support and care. Finally Seth calms down again and lifts his head.
“I feel like I can’t do anything right…”
“You know what? You’re exhausted. What you should do is go to your hotel-room, have a long hot shower and get some sleep. You are so tired that you can’t see things in perspective anymore…. I’m here, I’ll be with Kitty all night, if I have to. I’m not going to leave her side. If anything happens, I’ll call you right away.
Just put your phone next to your bed, where you can hear it. And get some sleep. These coming days will be crucial for Kitty in her battle against her cancer. Kitty will need your strength and that means that you need rest too. Now go!” Nora orders him and she pushes him towards the elevator-door.
“Dad, would it be alright if I went with Mateo to “Café 429”?” Helen asks, getting up from the breakfast-table.
“What is that?” Clark Lockhart asks in return.
“He wants to take you to a restaurant? For dinner?” Clark asks.
“No, apparently he and a few others, including Paige often drop off there to study together. It’s owned by Scotty.”
“He’s Mateo’s father.”
“Mateo’s father is gay?” Clark seems surprised by her words
“Yes.” Helen answers as if her father is really slow.
“Are you sure?” Her mother now joins the conversation.
“Well, duh. Everyone refers to them as each other’s husband. Scotty is Kevin’s husband, Kevin is Scotty’s husband. Now, unless you can think of a reason for two straight men to be married to each other, I’m going to assume they’re gay.”
“Café 429?” Clark asks again, writing down the name in the corner of the paper he’s reading. “Fine. Unless... your mother disagrees?” He looks at Clarissa. She shakes her head.
“Good. Then I’m off to school.” Helen gives her parents a quick kiss and they both wave goodbye to her.
It isn’t until she’s really out of sight that Clarissa turns to Clark.
“You have to find out.” She says.
“If Elena's husband was gay, it might explain a thing or two. Frustration can lead to violence...”
“Maybe. But we need to know. Before Helen and this… Mateo get too close.”
“We agreed that we would not go search for the Paresas.”
“Well, it would seem that the Paresas have found the Lockharts through some sort of magnetic pull. If Mateo is who we think he might be, then Helen and Mateo can’t get romantically involved.”
“But they’re not. Helen said…”
“I don’t care what Helen says. You think I told my parents everything when I was sixteen? … Did you?... No, I didn’t think so… We have to talk to Mateo’s father.”
“Fine. I’ll go to Café 429. Want to come along?”
“I have appointments all day.” She replies, shaking her head.
“Shall I go alone? Then, at least, we’ll have answers before tonight.”
“Yes, fine…. You’re right. The faster we put this to rest, the better…. Maybe this is all just for nothing and Mateo is not who we think he is.” Clarissa agrees with a sigh.
“Olivia, hurry up! It’s time to go!” Kevin yells. Olivia rushes down the stairs.
“Nearly forgot my clothes for soccer-practice.” She holds up the bag to show the reason for the delay.
“Good. Go. You have to go!” Kevin chases her away after her kiss.
“Bye, Elizabeth.” Tommy gives his daughter a quick kiss, but then she runs off to the waiting car and he turns to Jordan and Billy. He gives Billy, who’s on Jordan’s arm, a quick kiss, and says to Jordan: “I’ll make sure I’m home by five, so you can go to school.”
“Thanks.” Jordan smiles.
“No, I just think it’s great that you decided to go back to school and get a higher degree.”
“I have to, in this household, I’ll soon be outsmarted by kids like those ones.” Jordan holds up Billy and makes a head-movement to Daniel.
“If you need any help whatsoever….” Tommy offers.
“I’ll ask.” Jordan nods, glad with the knowledge that not only Tommy, but also Kevin and Scotty are supporting him.
“Five.” Tommy promises one more time and then he’s gone, followed by Kevin. Outside Kevin catches Tommy just before he gets into his car.
“Tommy! Wait! Forgot to tell you… but Jill will come over, the day after tomorrow, and evaluate the situation for Olivia, Mateo, Elizabeth and Billy. You will need to be there.”
“Fine. Give me the time that she’ll be here and I’ll be here too... See you tonight.” Tommy accepts and he fastens the seat-belt of his new, or rather his second-hand car.
“Don’t wreck that one as well! …. See you tonight.” Kevin waves as Tommy disappears in one direction, while he has to take the other.
Inside, Jordan struggles to get Billy into his clothes, he’s grown out of so many of them. The door opens and a still-sleepy Scotty walks in.
“Daddy!” Daniel immediately hangs around Scotty, who picks him up.
“Hey, sweetie, daddy’s not fully awake yet.”
“Coffee first.” Daniel knows.
“That’s right, sweetie, did your dad leave me some?”
“Red light is still on.” Daniel point at the coffee-maker. “That is bad.”
“Yes, usually it is, but I think dad did it, because he knew that I would be up…”
“Oh.” Daniel loses interest in the coffee-maker and focuses his attention on his police-car that was chasing the bad guys.
“Hey, Jordan. Want some coffee as well?”
“Yes. Tommy really needs to get Billy some new clothes, these are all getting too tight.”
“They grow too fast.” Scotty agrees. “Tell Tommy.”
“Forgot.” Jordan rubs his face.
“How’s school going?”
“Bad.” Jordan sighs.
“Why?” Scotty keeps his eyes closed while the still hot coffee makes him all warm inside.
“You know what it’s like. I share the place with three others, who, unfortunately, have a more exuberant night-life than me and they come in at all hours of the night. Last night, one of them came in by two. With his boyfriend. All loud and giggly and drunk…”
“Sorry to hear that.” Scotty says.
“I just slept for maybe 3 hours last night. After working here all day, I try to study, but I can’t keep my eyes open and I can’t finish my homework either.”
“Well, I’m up early now. Why don’t I look after Daniel and Billy for a bit, so you finish your homework?”
“Would you?” Jordan asks.
“Yeah, sure. I remember what it was like to try to juggle work, study and something of personal life. Go get your books.” Scotty says and he absentmindedly takes Daniel on his lap.
Sarah enters the hotel-lobby, not exactly sure what’s she’s looking for. Tyler is behind her desk and Sarah can she how she hands a key-card to one of the guests. Sarah’s eyes scan the lobby to see if she can find Justin, but no such luck.
“Hey, Sarah, anything I can do for you?”
Sarah is almost startled that Tyler takes time to greet her and talk to her.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you. You looked so busy.” Sarah answers.
“Daisy took over… She’s getting better and better.”
“No more missing objects?”
“Nope, everything found and returned. The customers are happy and Daisy is so grateful. I know that what she did was wrong, but I could understand her anger over being ‘last one picked’.”
“It’s happened to her many times before in her life, I understand.”
“Yes, and though, at first, Cleo disagreed with my decision, Cleo has now taken Daisy under her wings and she’s teaching Daisy to step out of the shadows and show herself some more.” Tyler smiles. “But I assume that you didn’t come here to discuss issues with staff? Are you looking for Justin?”
“I don’t know what I’m looking for.” Sarah sighs. “I just got back from Sacramento and … I guess I just wanted to talk to someone, but I know that Kevin and Tommy are busy at work, Mom is in Boston with Kitty, uncle Saul is in New York with Jonathan, the kids are in school and Joe is still mad with me over what happened with Paige and Bradley.”
“Why don’t we go to my office where we can talk privately?” Tyler suggests and Sarah signals her to lead the way. Tyler enters her office and immediately orders some coffee in there. They both wait until it’s been brought, until Tyler says:
“Justin is working today as well, so I’m afraid you’re stuck with me.”
“I’m glad I am…” Sarah smiles, before turning all serious. “I’ve been in such pain over whether or not I should have come back after I heard about Paige….” She shakes her head, trying to get rid of the memory of the awful argument she had had with Joe and the way he had accused her:
“You couldn’t leave well enough alone, could you? For you, Mateo wasn’t good enough, no, Bradley was so much better and now look at our baby. Drugged and nearly raped! What a prize-boyfriend you chose for her! This would not have happened if she would have stayed with Mateo. God, I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened if Mateo hadn’t been there on time? Or if he had simply hang up on her? Can you even imagine how crushed Paige would have been? It would have destroyed her!”
“I’ll take the next flight back.” Sarah cries.
“Don’t bother! She’s fine now, I’m taking care of her. There’s nothing you can do now anyway. The damage is done, it has happened and all we can do is make sure that Paige will get through this. Physically and emotionally.”
“Which is why I should be with her. I’m her mother.”
“I don’t think that Paige needs you right now.” Joe had replied harshly.
And indeed, Paige hadn’t been too interested in having her there either.
“Thanks, mom, but I’m fine. Nothing happened in the end.” Paige had replied.
“Nothing happened? You nearly got….”
“I know! I know what nearly happened. And there’s nothing that you can do about that. Nothing would change if you’d come here. Stay there with grandpa Brody. I don’t need you here.”
“But Paige, …”
“I don’t want to talk to you anyway. It’s all your fault anyway. I had a nice boyfriend. A boyfriend I’ve now lost to another girl. And what’s even worse: I like that girl! She’s nice and she helped Mateo to save my life and .. and … and I can see how Mateo could be happier with her than with me…” Paige had started to cry.
“I never felt more helpless.” Sarah tells Tyler. “I still don’t know if I shouldn’t have taken the first available flight back….”
“There was a lot of anger and pain going around. I don’t think that you could have accomplished something other than be a target for their anger. I think, if you would have come back, a lot of angry words would have been spoken.
Paige, Joe, Kevin, Mateo… They were all so upset, so angry… People look for a scapegoat in a situation like this and you would have been the easiest target…. You know how this works. And once you’ve spoken out ugly words, it’s hard to take them back. The impact lingers. If you would have come back right away, there would have been arguments and fights and it wouldn’t have solved anything….”
Tyler is so calm about it, that Sarah wants to believe her words.
“So, how was it to meet the family?” Tyler now asks.
“I don’t know. I’m a bit at a loss. I’ve really tried, but either they really don’t like me, or they are very good at covering up their feelings. I couldn’t connect to them at all. It was like running into a wall over and over again.”
“I heard that they weren’t much like the Walkers.” Tyler smiles.
“No one is like the Walkers…” Sarah sighs. “But all of this made me realize that I am a Walker and not a Brody. This is the family I grew up with and where my roots are. I had hoped to find something on the Brody side of the family too.
Something that was familiar, something that would click and make me think ‘oh, so that is where I got this from’, but the more I got to know them, the less I felt I had something in common with them. When I came back from Sacramento, last time, I felt disappointed and rejected because they didn’t want to know me.
Now I’m disappointed and I feel rejected, because they did make the effort to get to know me and I found out that I’m ‘too different’ somehow to feel like I belong with them.”
“Damned if you do, damned if you don’t?” Tyler teases.
“Yes, something like that.” Sarah smiles.
