12th-Feb-2013 10:37 pm (UTC)
And don't get us mixed up with the Germans who are Deutsch. ;)
12th-Feb-2013 10:48 pm (UTC)
oh yes. but we are so much mistaken for the 'Deutschländer' that there is little to no risk at that ;)
14th-Feb-2013 10:28 am (UTC)
You really don't want to feed those who hear Dutch and think we're German... Reminds me of the time when I was in London with Iris and I had to ask at what time some train would leave. The guy, who had heard me talk to Iris in Dutch, kindly answered in an attempt to speak German (not quite succeeding) so I replied to him in German, because I didn't want to embarrass him.. :D

nice one :)

everywhere we go and we get asked where we are from it always the same conversation:
"ooh you're from Luxembourg. that's in Germany, right." (if the person even knows where to locate us :)
"no. We are a small independent country"
"which language do you speak? German?"
"no. Luxembourgian"
"that's like Dutch, right?"
"yeah... no, not at all."

Person embarrassed, changes topic :) it's always the same... everywhere I've been :)

have a nice and relax weekend :)

big hugs

Here in France we say Pays-Bas or Hollande.....and our President's name is Hollande too!!!
14th-Feb-2013 10:30 am (UTC)
I know! And at least he's taking our stance on same sex marriage! :D

It is weird that the "Holland" part is so prominent (or perhaps not, historically speaking) but indeed the French don't say Pays-Bassiens or something like that as an alternative for "Hollandais"

best explanation ever!! i do have a frined who lives in some province and once explained to me that the netherlands is a bunch of provinces being holland just one (or 2) of them. i wasn't aware of the rest (caribbean and europeans? interestig!)

thanks for sharing
14th-Feb-2013 10:31 am (UTC)
We're everywhere! :D There are indeed 2 of them North-Holland and South-Holland.

13th-Feb-2013 04:03 am (UTC) - lol, yeah, still a little confused
But I think I understand how there are Polynesian Dutch (in Hawaii) :)
14th-Feb-2013 10:31 am (UTC) - Re: lol, yeah, still a little confused
Yes, we're everywhere, worst than the flu, I swear. :D

It's a really great video that explains things in a funny way.

I don't understand why this mistake is so widespread, and in different languages. It's not hard to understand Holland is a province (well two, if I understand correctly) of the Netherlands.

Does that make you scream when your hear the mistake or do you let it go past you? Like there's no hope!

It was explained that, at least historically speaking, Holland was more prominent than the other provinces, but indeed, it's weird. People also talk about France and don't single out Normandy or England/Dorset and turn it into a name for everyone that lives in that country by using a province-name.

No, I don't mind, but then I originally come from South Holland so I'm both from Holland and from the Netherlands, but I have friends in Friesland (Northern province in the Netherland) and they take offence to being called a Hollander. They are Fries or Dutch, but not a Hollander... Complicated what?
14th-Feb-2013 02:26 pm (UTC)
wait, france is a country... and normandy is another... i am confused now...
14th-Feb-2013 12:42 am (UTC)
Lolol...thanks for clearing that up.I really had no idea. But you live in one of the Holland's,right?
14th-Feb-2013 10:39 am (UTC)
I come from South Holland (born and raised in Rotterdam) but I live in North-Brabant now, which is bordering Belgium.
