Cassandra is nearly in tears and Scotty once again tells her that it’s not her fault at all.
“I feel so stupid. I just felt that something was off, but I didn’t know what. She was so kind at first, so normal, so… I don’t know… but something was just wrong. You should have heard the way she got mad at Elizabeth…”
“At Elizabeth? Why?”
“Elizabeth asked after her brother…”
“She wanted to know where he was….”
“Wasn’t he in the car?”
“No. The backseat was empty and Elizabeth had to sit on the front-seat…”
“Where did Julia say that Billy was?”
“That was weird. She didn’t answer….”
“I don’t know… It was like she had no clue where he was either….” Cassandra shakes her head. “And then I said goodbye as I always do. I said ‘drive safely’ like I always do with you or Kevin.
I even say it to Nora or Tyler or Justin if they are the ones who come and get Elizabeth. But when I said it to Julia, she got mad, said she wasn’t an idiot and then she drove off like one.”
“I’m going to call Kevin, I’m starting to get really nervous here.”
“Mom, I really have to go to the bathroom.” Elizabeth insists.
“Just a few miles more, honey.” Julia soothes.
“No, mommy. You said that half an hour ago. I need to go now. It’s starting to hurt, mommy….” Elizabeth is nearly in tears.
“Alright.. There’s a truck-stop…. You can go to the bathroom there….” Julia eventually says, as she goes to the lane that will take her to the truck-stop. “I will fill up the car, so we can continue driving after that….” She nervously looks into her rearview mirror.
“I’ll be right back.” Elizabeth hurries to the bathroom.
She’s glad to take the painful feeling off her bladder, but doesn’t waist much time after that, she pulls her phone from her pocket, switches it on and quickly types a message.
“I hope you get it, Kevin.” She whispers and she switches off her phone again, sticks it back in her deep pockets and she goes out to wash her hands.
When she looks into the mirror she sees a terrified girl looking back at her, but she can’t stop to look at her for too long. Elizabeth looks at the windows but they are barred and, to be honest, where can she run to? How far could she get before Julia would find her again.
“Elizabeth?!” Julia flings open the door.
“Just done washing my hands.” Elizabeth replies, with - what she hopes – a natural smile. Julia smiles back at her, so it couldn’t have been a bad copy.
“I’ll just pick up some bags of snacks and some drinks… for along the road.”
“Alright…” Elizabeth nods. “Get I also get some hot chocolate?”
“Yes, of course… but we have to drive on.”
“I can drink it along the way…” Elizabeth answers and she goes back to her mother’s car and waits there for Julia to join her.
“I’m so sorry, Lena, I think I may have let you come here for no reason.. Ahm… something has happened… Family-thing…. Julia seems to have taken Elizabeth away without permission… It’s a long story, but I’m, right now, the official guardian of Tommy’s daughter and Julia did something wrong…. Tommy will be here any minute…”
“Anything I can do to help?” Lena asks, concerned by Kevin’s nervous reaction.
“I’m so sorry for the inconvenience, but could you take the contract home, read it there, sign it if you agree and give it back. I seriously wanted to sit down with you and go over it with you, but…”
“No, of course, I understand. Family emergency.” Lena nods, when the door flies open and Tommy rushes in.
“So have you learned more…?” He stops mid-sentence and stares at Lena. “Hi, Lena.”
“Tommy.” Lena calmly nods.
If she had been afraid that there would be lingering feelings, she can now safely say that there are none. The phone on her desk starts to ring and she picks it up to look at the display.
“It’s Scotty.” She says and she hands over the phone to Kevin.
“Kevin, I just spoke to Annie’s mother. And… Cassandra says that the backseat was empty and Elizabeth had to get on the front-seat of the car. Billy wasn’t with Julia in the car. And when Elizabeth asked about him, Julia nearly bit her head off.”
“But… But if she didn’t have Billy in the car, where is he?”
“I don’t know, Kev, but I’m worried. Cassandra says that Julia reacted so nervously and kept looking over her shoulder as if she was being followed. It was in fact her nervousness that make Cassandra uncomfortable.”
“I’ll call you back in a minute….. Tommy! Billy wasn’t with Julia in the car.”
“What?” A look of sheer panic comes to Tommy’s face. “What do we do now? Where could he be?”
“Do you think she could have left him at home? In his own bed?” Lena suggests.
“There’s an idea.” Tommy turns back to Kevin, when Kevin’s phone starts to beep. Kevin checks the message and his eyes become wide.
“It’s from Elizabeth.” He says dumbfounded. “And this isn’t good…. Here. Read it.” Kevin shows it to Tommy and Lena can’t help but read along over Tommy’s shoulder.
“Mom is weird. Going to az. Am scared. Big bob s tr stop. phone switched off. E”
“Could ‘az’ be Arizona?” Lena tries to translate.
“Julia’s father…” Tommy suddenly sees the light, while Lena sits down behind the computer and starts to Google.
“Here. A truck-stop called Big Bob…. It’s on the way out of state….”
“She has an advantage on us of about one hour. She could be out of state in two, three hours and then it will be more difficult to get Elizabeth back… Tommy! We have to act fast. She’s under my custody and Julia had no right to take her. This is kidnapping.” Kevin tells him. Tommy slowly shakes his head. He cannot believe this is true.
“Do what you must do.” He then answers with a miserable look on his face. “What about Billy?”
“You’re losing valuable time standing here.” Lena practically reminds them. Kevin nods in agreement.
“Lena, here’s the phone-number for Max Carter. He’s a friend of ours. Can you call him and tell him what has happened or ask him to contact me?”
“Yeah, sure. What about Billy?”
“We could leave the key to Tommy’s house with you and Scotty can get it here.”
“Wouldn’t it be easier if your husband went straight to Tommy’s house?”
“Well, it’s closer by, but he doesn’t have the key.”
“I’ll get to him on my way back home. I’m here with my own car.” Lena says.
“Would you do this?” Kevin asks.
“Yes, of course, no problem.” Lena smiles and Kevin watches how she writes down the telephone number from Max Carter and the address of Tommy’s house, before she takes the key from Tommy and rushes away, her phone in her hand.
“She’s good.” Kevin says with respect.
“Told you.” Tommy replies. “What do we do?”
“We’re going after Julia. And fast. We have to try and stop her before she manages to get in to Arizona.”
“Nora, you’ve been driving yourself half-crazy over this. Look in your heart. Do you really believe William to be a murderer?”
“What do I know, Saul? He died and turned out to not only be an embezzler, but a cheater with two mistresses and an illegitimate child. Did I ever really know him?” Nora answers.
“Nora, William had his problems, but I don’t want believe he was a murderer.” Saul says.
“I didn’t want to believe he had embezzled our employees, but he had. I didn’t want to believe that…”
“Yes, I get it!” Saul cuts her off. “But killing his father … on purpose?”
Nora closes the last photo-album with a loud bang.
“I’m done! He drives me crazy and…” The phone starts to ring and Nora picks it up. “Nora Walker… Hi Kevin,… No… Billy is not with me… Why? What is going on? … She did what? … Oh, Kev… No, listen, don’t worry. I’ll call Sarah, Kitty and the others alright….?”
“What’s going on?”
“Julia kidnapped Elizabeth. But we don’t know where Billy is… You call Sarah and Kitty. I'll call Justin and Tyler.” She orders.
“Julia kidnapped Elizabeth?” Saul echoes.
“Those were Kevin’s words. I don’t know anymore than this.. Start calling. We have to find Billy. If we find him, we first have to call Scotty, he’s on his way to Tommy’s house to see if Billy is still there…” Nora throws Saul’s phone at him and she starts dialing Justin’s number…
Lena recognizes Scotty immediately. If not from the picture on Kevin’s desk, then for the memory of the tall man she had met on Kitty’s wedding-day and the memory of how much she had regretted to hear that he was gay.
“Lena? Hi, I’m…”
“Scotty, I know, we met at Kitty’s wedding… Here’s the key…”
“Do you want to go upstairs with me?” Scotty asks. "I feel weird about being alone in Julia’s house."
“Why not? Haven’t got anything better to do.”
They take the elevator to the 6th floor and soon enough they find the front-door they’re looking for. Scotty opens the door. The first thing that greets them is an incredible silence…. Scotty shivers.
“God, I hope she didn’t do anything to Billy…”
“Living-room is empty.” Lena quickly assesses.
“Kitchen too…” Scotty says after a quick look around.
“This must be the master-bedroom…. It’s empty as well….” Lena can’t help but starting to feel uneasy as room after room turns out to be empty. She approaches a closed door.
With her hand on the doorknob, she first looks at Scotty, who nods. She closes her eyes and flings the door open. This is definitely the room where Billy sleeps, but the bed is empty and there’s not a beep in the room. The two turned-off baby-alarms stand side by side….
Both Scotty and Lena let out a shriek when Scotty’s phone suddenly starts to ring, piercing through the silence.
“Gave me nearly a heart-attack.” Scotty stammers. “Hi, Nora…. I see… You’re sure? Alright, thanks for calling.”
Lena and Scotty both laugh nervously over their reaction.
“News?” Lena then asks.
“Couldn’t be worse. He’s not with Sarah or Holly. He wouldn’t have been at Ojai, otherwise Tommy would have known.
Billy wasn’t with Kitty or Seth either and Nora spoke to Tyler, who’s working and she doesn’t have Billy either. She couldn’t get in touch with Justin, but he’s on the ambulance, so it’s highly unlikely that he would have Billy.”
As Scotty gives Nora’s news to Lena they check out Elizabeth’s room and the bathroom as well, but there’s no sign of Billy anywhere. Lena looks around.
“Billy!” She yells. “Billy!” And upon seeing Scotty’s surprised face, she explains: “If he’s hidden someplace, he might hear us and start crying…?”
Both Lena and Scotty call out Billy’s name, but the silence remains.
“I don’t like this.” Lena then says.
“Me neither…. Where can he be?” Scotty wonders and he lets his fingers run through his hair as a sign of frustration and worry.
“I’ve sent a warning for a search for Julia’s car…” Max Carter confirms to Kevin.
“Thank you, Max.”
“Let’s hope we can stop her before she can get into Arizona….”
“I hope so too…” Kevin answers.
“The police is searching for her as well now?” Tommy wants to know.
“Yes. And would you please drive slower? I want the police on Julia’s tail and not ours.” For a moment it looks as if Tommy would disagree, but then he sighs.
“You’re right, there’s no reason for us to kill ourselves.” If Kevin is surprised by this, he certainly won’t mention it. He’s too worried about Elizabeth and Julia himself. “There is something that might work in our favor. If Julia doesn’t get her medication on time, she will start to get sleepy.”
“And that is good? If she falls asleep behind the wheel, with Elizabeth in the car next to her?” Kevin asks.
“Elizabeth might be able to convince her to stop…” Tommy explains. “Julia wants Elizabeth more than anything. She’s not going to put Elizabeth’s life a risk…”
“I hope so. God, I hope so…” Kevin’s voice trembles and Tommy realizes how weird it all is. Kevin is her biological father, he’s been taking care of her for months.… Of course, he would be as terrified as Tommy is.
“It will be alright. We’ll find her… We have to..” Tommy says with a stubborn look on his face, not sure if he's trying to convince Kevin or himself.
