Fanfic: B&S episode 701: part 1/5

I know Christmas is over, but I've struggled with the start of this season. I wanted to write a Christmas-story, but, as you will notice, nothing dramatic happened to the Walkers during Christmas. No accidents, no getting chased by a psychopath, no power-shortage... In fact, I gave up on the idea of something Christmas-sy altogether, but the Walkers didn't agree with THAT either. Sigh. So, I'm afraid this 'episode' is Christmas-episode and season-premiere, all wrapped up in one story. It will be a bit dull, but I have to put all my pawns in position and things will change, I promise. ;)

PART 1/5

Hi Holly,

Just a quick email to reply to your loooooooong email from a few days ago. I’m glad that Rebecca and her husband, Rick, are so happy with their son Julian. I had to laugh so hard at your description of how you felt when you suddenly became aware that you’re a grandmother now… It reminded me of the first time I saw Paige. :)

Julian must be nearly 7 weeks old now? Yes, you left early November and it’s now nearly end of December. They grow so fast. Enjoy that little boy while you can, before you know it they’re sixteen, giving you a headache and causing heartache. that sounds depressing. So, alright, maybe Julian won’t. Mine aren’t so bad either. Just enjoy being a grandmother.

I’m very happy for you and David. I hope it’s not too cold in London at the moment? You’re not really used to the bad weather, you even complained about New York. Of course, looking at your grandson must warm your heart. That is how I feel about it though.

I’m also glad that David has been offered another job. He has made quite a name for himself and he deserves to be so busy and have a lot a good work coming his way. He certainly worked hard enough for it. I just wish that you were here to see how wel we are progressing.

And now, to keep you up-to-date on things on this side of the world, as you asked:
Brody and me: What can I say? It’s up and down and all over the place. He came back to me after he realized that I would stick to my decision to not sell the house. He said he loved me and that he wanted to be with me, even if it meant living in William’s house.

I’m not sure if that’s the right attitude though. I told him to start thinking about it as ‘our’ house, but I don’t think it’s really working. We’ve tried to make some changes to the house, so it would be more his house too… A lot of William’s pictures are gone, for instance, and Brody’s happy with that, but I miss seeing William’s face in the familiar places.

It’s weird, but it always felt like somehow William was still keeping an eye on us, for better or for worse, and now that the pictures are gone it feels as if he’s gone as well.”
Nora stops to overlook her desk. Indeed, no pictures of William and somehow the desk feels so … empty. She shakes her head to get rid of her thoughts and continues:

“I don’t know why, but I had expected that Brody’s stay wouldn’t last long and indeed, he’s gone again. This time, he’s with his children though. His eldest son was injured in a car-accident and Brody decided to take the opportunity to ask them for one more chance. The verdict is still out, I’m afraid.

I understand that things are strained, but the relationships may not entirely impossible to fix. His children are still very mad at him and they still feel like he abandoned them too many times. They weren’t happy to find out about Sarah and me and they are afraid that Sarah would insert herself in their family.

Meeting Sarah hadn’t made them more interested in Sarah or me I’m afraid. Sarah got snubbed and I might as well not exist. Oh, well…. We’ll see… Perhaps it’s just wishful thinking, but I think that he sees me and my children and that he wants the same closeness in his own family.

At least, he’s giving it another try, which is right with me, because I believe he should fight for his children. What is the point of having a couple of beautiful kids and just ignore their very existence? Besides, I’m afraid it may also say something about his relationship with Sarah.

Meanwhile, back to my kids….

Sarah… Everything is moving along with the new offices. It may have taken us a while to get it organized, but you’ll love the new offices at “Ojai Food and Wine”. By the time we will officially open our offices, early January, we will be ready. New offices, new computers, new lay-out, but still that ‘old’ Ojai feeling when you enter the building.

I hope you will have returned from England by the time we open, because it wouldn’t be the same without you. Sarah works closely with Ryan and things are running remarkably smooth. Sarah seems to have reclaimed her good sense of humor and she’s more the Sarah, that I used to know, from before she joined William at Ojai Food.

The relationship between Sarah and Paige and Cooper is back to being good, which is a positive change after all the trouble the kids went through with her over these last few months. The kids were even allowed to spend a few days with Luc Laurent, when he visited LA a few weeks ago.

It was a bit weird. Luc took a room at the June Flower, Scotty's hotel, spent time with Kevin, Scotty and their kids and with Justin and Tyler. He was wonderful with Paige and Cooper, brought me flower-bulbs from France. And he even went to a concert to see Joe, Sarah’s ex-husband, perform on the stage, but he still doesn’t want to talk to Sarah though. Not at all!

How ridiculous is that? I don’t know if and how much it hurts or offends Sarah and I try to stay out of it. She has made her choice to divorce and she’s going to have live with it. I’m glad that he’s not mad at all of us and that he wishes to stay in touch with us. Besides, he’s back in France now anyway…

Ryan works closely with Sarah at the moment, He’s really making an effort to get to know his other siblings as well. He has locked horns with Kitty on politics, exchanged recipes with Scotty (and we both know that the best way to befriend Kevin is by liking Scotty) and he went surfing with Justin. It’s a slow process, but he’s trying.

Kitty, Seth, Evan and Grace are doing fine. Kitty is back on the radio, doing what she always did, fight for a living, and she’s thrilled. Seth’s novel has been well received, but unfortunately his mother wasn’t too impressed. It led to a fight between Seth and his mother.

Apparently, Seth accused his mother of never being satisfied with his work, that somehow he’s never good enough. Kitty was very upset by it all, because Seth was so angry and his mother very vicious. The result of it all is that Kitty and Seth aren’t talking to Seth’s mother anymore.

Evan has had a growth-spurt and now looks as if he’s 10 year old already. Seth wonders if he’ll be interested in a career as a basketball-player! Of course it could also mean that Evan won’t grow another centimeter in 4 years. Oh, and he’s telling everyone that he’s going to marry Grace, his sister, because she’s 'so sweet'.

Well, technically speaking they could, because they are not related, but we hope it’s just child’s talk. :-) Because it would be strange. Not that ‘strange’ isn’t something that belongs to this family but why make life more complicated than it strictly has to be, right?

Where it comes to Tommy and Julia things are a lot harder. Julia, as you remember, had been kidnapped and had been made pregnant, and she was too far along to have an abortion and now … the boy is here. His name is William, but they nickname him Billy. I don’t know how I feel about that.

It’s not that I mind that his name is William, but I think it’s weird to give your child the same name as a child you already lost. It feels, to me, as if they are trying to replace the one they lost several years ago, with the one they now have. Especially if you consider the way the boy came to be… Just… weird.

On a happier note, Tommy and Julia did get remarried. Quietly. No fuss. So Julia is Julia Walker again. Tommy, Julia and Billy are still in Kansas, but we hope that they will be back in Pasadena after Christmas. The psychiatrists are very impressed with how well Julia is doing, all things considered.

She gained weight, had a healthy child, has grown to love this child, despite of how he came to be and I’m happy that Tommy and Julia can now focus on building a life for themselves again. This will of course have a major impact on Elizabeth, I’m afraid. It means that, one of these days, she will have to leave Kevin and Scotty.

And I wonder what it will do to her. She’s become such a part of Kevin and Scotty’s family, that it will take time for her to adjust to new rules and to having another place in the family. Olivia has become a big sister to her and Elizabeth is great with Daniel. I’m not sure how she’ll feel about meeting Billy though.

So far, Tommy has kept her away from physical contact with Julia and Billy. She knows that her mother has been ‘sick’, for whatever that means, and that Billy is born and that he’s her half-brother. She likes to see him on pictures and Skype, but she has no idea what has happened to her mother.

Kevin and Scotty are as busy as ever. Scotty had decided to buy his neighbor’s place to expand Café 429. Well, the bank was a bit difficult about it, but with the Walker name, Carter and Kevin’s expertise and a good business plan drawn up by Sarah, Saul and Scotty and extra financial backup by Jonathan, the bank decided to help out.

Then came the next hurdle. Saul, Scotty, Jonathan and Kevin couldn’t come to a decision about what the place should look like, once it would have become one big restaurant. How to have a big restaurant and still make it feel cozy and small and intimate. That’s where the bickering began.

Scotty wanted the kitchen and bar to stay where they were, but Saul disagreed. Saul felt it was impractical and Scotty disagreed and well,… blah, blah, long story, but eventually Kevin and Jonathan could make Scotty and Saul see that they could only spend their money once and that they had to make practical decisions.

So, Scotty eventually agreed that the bar should go and Saul agreed that the kitchen should stay where it is…. Everyone happy! And now Café 429 will closed after Christmas and reopen 2 weeks later. In that time the entire restaurant will be put upside down. They plan to keep a lot of the old features and add some new ideas.

It looks pretty (on paper anyway). I’m sure that, with all the attention given to detail, it will be beautiful. This also means that they will have a large space on the first floor. Because they now own the apartments where Kevin and Scotty and their neighbor used to live. But they’ve managed to find good use for that as well.

All that space is converted into a small law-firm and a place where Browne Carter will live, while Kevin’s former office is used as storage-area for Café 429. It took Browne Carter, Kevin’s former boss, quite a while to get away from Carter, Wright and Dupré and to get his divorce finalized.

But he’s finally done and he and Kevin are almost officially working together, They have chosen the very original name of “Carter & Walker” for their company. I guess that after all the discussions on Café 429 Kevin couldn’t come up with anything more catchy. :)  They will officially open their business on the second Monday of the new year.

They already have a big account: Core Athletics. And with Core Athletics came a few others and Carter’s move from CW&D also made a few people move with him, so it’s not as if Kevin has to start from scratch and with nothing at all, which makes me happy, because I remember how much energy he had to put into starting over.

I’ve met Browne several times now and I have to admit that I’m glad that he’s working with Kevin. The Core Athletic account is big enough to allow both men to do pro bono work and for both of them to be in the court-room, pleading cases, rather than being stuck behind a desk, pushing paperwork around and have meetings.

But there’s quite a lot of paperwork and Carter and Kevin had decided that they will need a secretary. They’ve posted an ad in papers and on line. Let’s hope they pick someone suitable for the job and someone who will be an asset to their company, but I’m sure they will.

And then there’s Justin. He and Tyler are doing just great as well. Tyler still works at the June-flower. She practically runs the place on her own by now, because Scotty is hardly involved. Justin continues to be a paramedic and I believe that their lives are calm. They both seem rather satisfied with what they have.”

Nora stops typing, wondering if perhaps that doesn’t sound too much like a dig at Rebecca, for there was never much peace in Justin’s life when he was with her… but then she reasons that if Holly can write that Rebecca is happy with Rick and Julian, then she should be able to say that Justin is happy with Tyler.

“Speaking of happiness. I don’t see much of Saul and Jonathan lately because those two are very busy at the centre for HIV-information and with Café 429 and Jonathan likes to travel around with Saul. I don’t believe that Saul has seen so much of the world as since he’s with Jonathan. I’m very glad that Saul finally found someone who can make him happy, but I miss him…

And, since you asked: The last news I have on Chad and Jason is that they are still in New Zealand, Chad went there to get one film done and he’s doing a second one there as well, something independent and more local. I hope he returns to America fast, because I miss him on “Tempest Island”. Yes, I’m watching that show.”
Nora smiles.

“And as for your question on what we plan to do for Christmas.. Not much I’m afraid. The family will be completely split up. I believe that Sarah, Kitty and Kevin each plan to celebrate it at home. Tommy will still be in Kansas. Justin has to work and Saul has a planned trip to Berlin…

Not that it matters much if they had planned to get together, because the only person who wil not be here ,will be me. I’m leaving to be with Brody. I figured that if we can’t be together here, then we can at least be together there. But, to be honest, I wish that I would be home for Christmas. With my family.”

Nora stops again, remembers what happened one Thanksgiving, when she wished the entire family together and Elizabeth ended up in hospital. Not wishing to tempt fate, she quickly deletes the last sentence to only inform Holly that she will leave in a few days… "Oh, and you won't believe the Christmas-present that Tommy has in mind for Kevin... In fact, I'm so surprised about it, that I just have to tell you...." She continues.
