Kevin knows that there’s trouble the moment his secretary announces that his father is at his office for a meeting with him. Kevin is used to see his father at the offices of Ojai Food, their family-company, which Kevin represents as a lawyer. William Walker showing up at Carter Wright and Dupree is the equivalent of an impending declaration of war.
While he nervously straightens his clothes, he wonders what on Earth he could have possibly done wrong. He becomes even more concerned when he sees that his father is not alone. One of his closest friends, Wally Wandell, is with him and this puts a frown on Kevin’s face. He’d rather never meet Wally Wandell or the rest of his family again.
“Dad. Wally.” Kevin nods. Wally and he shake hands. They haven’t spoken to each other in 10 years and Kevin wouldn’t have mind to keep it that way. He keeps his teeth clenched tightly. His face doesn’t express any interest in what is going on or why his father and Wally are even here in his office.
Feeling the wall of aversion that comes from Kevin, Wally clears his throat.
“Kevin… I know that I’m about the last one who should ask you for a favor, but …. I need your help.”
“Are you in trouble with the law?” Kevin carefully asks, letting down his guard a little bit.
Wally owns his own company and Kevin cannot imagine that there would something that he can handle and Wally’s lawyers can’t. Wally slowly shakes his head.
“No. It’s about my son, Scotty…” He starts and the moment he mentions his son’s name, the temperature in the room drops considerably.
Everything in Kevin tenses up. He’s barely able to control the impatience that he suddenly feels, wondering how his father and Wally could have thought for a single second that he so much as wants to talk about Wally’s offspring, who is someone Kevin loathes and both Wally and William know it.
“Hear him out, Kev?” William almost begs and Kevin frowns. For William to call him by his nickname “Kev”, it means that there’s something very serious. William and Kevin’s relationship is best described as ‘polite’, so to hear William refer to him with the more intimate “Kev” is a shock for Kevin, which makes Kevin’s frustration grow even higher.
Yet, he manages a barely visible nod, which Wally sees and so Wally continues:
“Scotty is in a relationship… With Jason McCallister…” He tries to see if Kevin recognizes the name at all, but Kevin’s poker-face works perfectly.
“Good for him…. For both of them?” Kevin wonders what it is about.
He knows the McCallisters very well. Robert McCallister had hired him as a lawyer when no one else would. Kevin had never met Jason in person, but Robert would often talk about him, using words that one wouldn’t easily expect from a man as sophisticated as Robert.
“Jason in a crook.” Wally blurts out. “I had a background check done on him and he’s used to seducing young men out of their money and leaving them broke…”
“So?” Kevin shrugs. He couldn’t care less that Wally’s stupid son is dating someone like Jason and he cares even less that the guy will screw Scotty over. Serves him right.
“I believe that you are the only person that could reason with Scotty right now…” Wally tries. Kevin sarcastically raises an eyebrow.
“I doubt it.” The words ‘ You son is too stupid’ burn on his lips, but he won’t say them, knowing his father will not like it.
“Please, Kevin, read the file, and read the data that was compiled on this Jason… And talk to my son. Make him understand that he’s making a huge mistake.” Wally begs.
“Wally, I’d love to you help with any judicial problem you have, but I won’t talk to your son. No matter what.” Kevin refuses.
“Kevin…..” William interferes.
“No.” Kevin repeats.
“Kevin, I know….”
“No, Wally. You don’t. You have no idea. None whatsoever.” Kevin replies once more, very determined.
Wally jumps up, but William turns to Wally and stops him from saying or doing anything stupid that will Kevin even more determined in his refusal.
“Wally, I want to talk to my son…” A little nod of William’s head tells Wally that he needs to leave the room. Without another word to Kevin, Wally turns around and leaves Kevin’s office and Kevin can’t say he sad about it. William now turns his attention to Kevin.
“I know, Kevin, that this won’t be easy…” he starts.
“Actually, it will be easy, because I won’t do it.” Kevin says again. William ignores him.
“…. That kid needs help…”
“Try a mental institution. It’s where he belongs.”
“Kevin, Wally is one of my oldest friends. He’s terrified that Scotty will ruin his own life.”
“I don’t care. I seriously don't care.”
“…He’s about to get hurt very deeply…” William tries once again.
“I still don’t care... That little piece of shit deserves it.”
“… He’s only 24 years old, in love, and incapable to see Jason for what he is….”
“Dad, Wally’s son is insane.”
Kevin says the words as if he’s stating an irrefutable fact. It makes that William finally sees that his son won’t budge on the subject. He nods quietly and lets out a deep sigh.
“I can’t make you… I know that… Will you at least read the file? … Perhaps there something else we can do to stop Jason? Something we hadn’t thought of?”
William looks defeated and Kevin feels sorry for him. It’s not that often that he flatly refuses to do something for his father, but talking to Scotty Wandell…? Cold day in hell before he’ll do that. William places the file in front of Kevin, on his desk.
“Please?” William asks almost gently. Kevin nods.
“I’ll read it…” Kevin promises stiffly. “But there’s no way I’m going to talk to Wally’s brat. He’s not fourteen anymore. He’s supposed to take over his father company one day and if he’s too busy, playing with his dick, to do a background check on who it is, that he’s fucking, than he shouldn’t get the responsibility of Wally’s company.” Kevin shrugs and William can't really disagree with his son.
“Mr Wandell?” Scotty’s secretary has the voice of a sweet twelve year old girl.
“Yes, Tammy?” He answers patiently.
“There’s a Mr Walker here. He doesn’t have an appointment with you but…”
“You know that William is always welcome here.” Scotty smiles.
“It’s not William Walker… It’s his son, Kevin Walker?” Tammy explains and Scotty nearly drops the papers, which he holds in his hands, ready to pass out in complete shock.
“K…K…Kevin? … Ahm…” Scotty clears his throats. “Kevin Walker?!?!?!?!” He asks dumbfounded.
“Why didn’t I get the memo that hell froze over?” Scotty mumbles to himself, before speaking to Tammy. “…Give me two minutes, then send him in.” He tells her and he quickly stacks his papers, runs his fingers through his hair and straightens his clothes. He’s just in time to check his tie and then Tammy enters the room and introduces Kevin Walker.
Scotty nearly stops breathing when Kevin finally walks in. He hasn’t seen Kevin, in person, for 10 years and he’s shocked to find out that the man is still as drop-dead gorgeous as he was 10 years ago. And seeing Kevin stirs something in Scotty again.
“Tammy, can you bring us some coffee?” Scotty requests once he finally trusts his voice again.
“Don’t bother. I’ll be gone in a minute.” Kevin replies coldly and Tammy is more than happy to leave this ‘creepy guy’, as she later tells her colleague.
“How can I help you?” Scotty asks. He feels uncomfortable by Kevin’s hostile attitude, but he’s also curious as to why Kevin is here. Kevin throws a file on Scotty’s desk.
“I want you to read that…. Your father and mine came to see me yesterday and asked me if I could talk to you about your little boyfriend... Jason McCallister?… This is a file on him. I strongly suggest you read it. … And then dump him... Fast!”
It is all so unceremoniously that Scotty is too flabbergasted to react at first.
“W… Why? Why would I want to dump him?” He stammers.
“Because he’s trouble. He’ll ruin you, just like he did with others. Get rid of him…. And grow up….”
“And what’s it to you anyway?” Scotty wants to know.
“Nothing. I just want my father to stop pestering me to talk to you. So, just get rid of your sex-toy, so I can tell my dad that the situation is handled...” Kevin warns. He gets up and walks towards the door, considering the ‘conversation’ closed. At that moment he hears Scotty’s voice behind him.
“Dinner.” It is the only thing he says. Kevin slowly turns around.
“Excuse me?” Kevin asks. He can’t see how Scotty is trembling under his stare.
“Dinner. I will read this file on my boyfriend, if you’ll have dinner with me…”
“You’re crazy.” Kevin dismisses his words. “I want you to stay the fuck out of my life.”
“You are the one who walked into my office.” Scotty sweetly reminds him.
“Because your dad asked me to. But I had forgotten what an idiot you are…” Kevin puts a lot of venom in his words, trying to hurt and humiliate Scotty as much as he can.
“I’m not.” Scotty shakes his head. “But if you want me to read this? Fine… Get your father off the case? I can do that too…. And my dad as well? Easy as pie…. But dinner is the price you pay.” Scotty is relentless in his demand. Kevin shakes his head in disbelief, thinking he hasn’t heard it well.
“Forget it. You aren’t worth the hassle. Don’t want the read the file? Fine. Suit yourself. We’ll see who’ll be crying in the end. And – hint! – it won’t be me.” Kevin shrugs and continues to walk towards the door. Scotty’s shoulders sink, realizing that he had played high and lost. At the door, however, Kevin turns around and walks back, straight to Scotty’s desk.
“Fine! Café 429! Tomorrow night! 8 o’clock! Be on time! And you better have read this file, because I’ll fucking quiz you on it!” And after those words, he walks out and this time, he’s not coming back. Scotty sinks down on his chair and trembles like a leaf.
“Oh my God! Oh, my God.....Oh! ... My! ... God! … I have a date with Kevin Walker.” He whispers to himself and he nearly starts to hyperventilate.
