***** Part 4/4 *****
“Hey! It’s good to see you two.” Nora greets Paige and Cooper. “I’m glad your mom dropped you two off here.... Even if it’s just for two hours.”
“Like we can’t stay home alone for that long.” Cooper replies cynically and Nora frowns. She’s used to remarks like that from Paige, but not Cooper.
“Anyway, would you like to play a video-game..?” She offers. Though she hates them, she knows that Cooper loves them.
“No thanks.” Cooper replies. “I’d kinda done with playing. I want to finish my home-work, so I can go to bed early tonight.” Nora stares at her grand-son. Has the world gone mad?
“You want to go to bed early?” She repeats, thinking there's some punchline to come.
“Anything beats being the same room with mom.” Cooper tells her. Nora's smile is uncertain, while she tries to assess if Cooper is joking or not. He’s not.
“Are things really that bad at home?” Nora asks.
“Yes.” Paige answers, coming back from the pantry, where Nora keeps the cookie-jar. “It’s just awful, grandma. I’m not even talking about the fact that I’m no longer allowed to see uncle Kevin or uncle Scotty.
She would prefer it if I ignored Olivia and Mateo too, if I run into them in school. I should act as if they don’t exist. It’s getting to be completely ridiculous!”
“I know that she has issues with Mateo.” Nora tries to be as sweet about Sarah as she can be, but Paige shakes her head.
“Ha! Understatement! She was so rude to Mateo that Kevin has told her that she’s no longer welcome at his place, until she apologizes to Mateo.... which will never happen. So Mateo and I are doomed...” Paige sighs. Nora tries not to laugh. She can remember how many times the girls had sighed about ‘doomed relationships’ when they were younger.
At that age, everything is still so black and white.
“I’m sure that, if you two were meant to be, the path will show itself.” Nora answers in the same vague words she had once used for Kitty and Sarah. She sees the look on Paige’s face and she’s glad that she can hear the phone ring.
She quickly picks up, happy to hear that it’s Brody.
“So, how are you doing?”
“Bad.” Nora answers. She wonders if she should inform Brody on how things seem to have escalated for Sarah, but at the same time she realizes that there’s nothing he can do.
“If you’re worried about the result of the court-case tomorrow-morning, don’t be, I’m sure that the judge will let Elizabeth stay with you.” Brody says and Nora wishes that she could believe that he really believed in that, but she knows better.
“No. It’s about Sarah.”
“Sarah? What’s wrong with her?”
“According to her kids, she’s just terrible. I had noticed that Sarah was grumpy and quickly irritated and a tad bit easily insulted, but I hadn’t realised that it has turned so bad that Cooper would rather go to bed early than be in one room with her.”
“Maybe Cooper is exaggerating?”
“I don’t think so.” Nora replies.
“Do you think it’s related to the fact that she found out that she’s mine?”
“I thought she was over that.” Nora replies.
“I thought the same after the wedding...” Brody agrees. “.., but maybe it has hit her harder than she let on.”
“Maybe.” Nora replies with doubt. “But the truth is: She’s now arguing with almost everybody, even though it would seem that Mateo and Paige catch most of it.”
“Why don’t you try and talk to her....” Brody suggests. “She’ll listen to you.”
“I doubt it. But, maybe I will. Tomorrow. After we heard the decision that the judge has made.” Nora promises half-heartedly.
“Keep me updated! I want to know the outcome of the hearing and about Sarah.” Brody says.
Judge Zisman hates Monday-mornings and this Monday-morning in particular. She watches the shocked faces before her. They are all in her office. Nora is as white as a sheet. Justin is confused. Sarah and Kitty are near fainting, she fears. The only one who’s rather stoic, is Kevin, but she’s not too worried about that.
She knows that he knew about the body they had found in Canada, so that explains to her why he’s not as shocked as the others.
“You knew this?” Nora asks of Kevin.
“I knew it wasn’t Tommy they found.” Kevin admits.
“You kept it from us?” Sarah now asks.
“A lot of people get killed in this country. I don’t you keep posted on those either. It wasn’t Tommy, why upset you with what could have been, when it hasn’t happened.... And, for what it’s worth, I don’t believe that Tommy is dead.”
“It’s unimportant what you believe, Kevin, what is important is....” Sarah starts, but Judge Zisman, fearing another Walker-meltdown, calmly intervenes.
“What is important, is that, according to current data, it’s unlikely that either Julia Ridge or Thomas Walker will be back to raise Elizabeth Walker.” She says.
“After long deliberation, I’ve decided that Elizabeth should remain with Kevin Walker and Scotty Wandell. My reasoning is simple. I’ve spoken with people from Elizabeth’s school and Olivia’s social worker, who both agree that Elizabeth is doing fine where she is. She’s been thrown and dragged around from place to place.
Stability and organization is what she needs. As ‘unorganized’ as the schedules of both Mr Walker and Mr Wandell may seem to outsiders, she seems to know exactly where she stands and that is what matters now. She needs to know, that she’s safe where she is.
The fact that Mr Walker is her biological father, is no longer a secret to her and to know that he’s close to her might provide her with more of a family feeling than just her grand-mother. Furthermore, I agree with Mr Walker’s assessment that it was the wish of both her parents that, in their absence, he’d provide for her.
That said, once either Mr Thomas Walker or Miss Ridge decides to return, the custody will remain with Mr Kevin Walker and Mr Wandell, until it’s proven that either of Elizabeth’s parents, or both of them, are in a position to take care of her... In other words, they better have a damn good explanation for their absence, because this is, in my book, unacceptable.”
“Thank you.” Kevin sighs, trembling all over. The Walkers quietly and stiffly get up, still shocked and confused about what they just heard. Kevin turns to Scotty and hugs him. Kitty and Justin hug them as well, congratulating them. Kevin turns to Nora.
“No, Kevin, not yet... I... I need to ... get over this...” She replies, unable to completely hide her bitterness. “All this bad news about Tommy... and Julia... and Elizabeth...” She wipes away a tear and Kevin wonders if the fact that Elizabeth can stay with Scotty and him should really be considered ‘bad news’.
“I see. Well, you know where to find me if you need me.” He replies quietly.
“I do.” Nora answers. She doubts between turning her back on Kevin or hugging him. She loves him. He’s her son as well as Tommy is, why can’t she just let it go? But Nora remains frozen for too long and then she sees Kevin and Scotty walk away.
“So, it’s official?” Elizabeth asks.
“Yes, you can stay with us from now on...”
“Until either mom or dad comes home.” Elizabeth understands.
“Not exactly.” Kevin answers.
He watches how Olivia and Mateo listen as well and he tries to not be too much the lawyer, so that Elizabeth can understand it too.
“If Tommy or Julia want you back, they will first have to sit down with the judge and explain where they have been and why they haven’t contacted you.
The judge will then want to know if your mom or dad have plans to take care of you or if they will leave again. A lot will depend on if they have a home or a job...”
“But, if they come back, I’m not allowed to be with them?” Elizabeth wonders is she should be upset or relieved.
“No, not right away. They can of course visit you, talk to you, play with you, but ... you’re staying with Uncle Scotty and me.” Elizabeth nods carefully, feeling strangely relieved at Kevin’s words.
“Do you think that they will ever come back for me?” She asks is a small voice.
Kevin and Scotty exchange looks and Scotty lets Kevin know with one uncertain smile, that he doesn’t know what to answer. Kevin takes a deep breath.
“We honestly don’t know. I hope so. The police haven’t found them yet, even though they followed some leads. So, let’s hope for the best, alright?”
“Alright.” Elizabeth answers with a happy nod of her head. Kevin watches how the curls bounce around and he smiles.
“Good girl.... Scotty and I also have other news...” Kevin now also focuses on Mateo and Olivia. “Scotty?”
“Kevin and I have spoken to Mrs Winter, the lady who showed us her house? And we have agreed to buy the house.”
“Yes!” Olivia screams and she hugs both Mateo and Elizabeth, before throwing herself into Scotty’s arms.
Immediately there’s a wave of noise in their tiny living-room as four kids simultaneously discuss their plans for their room, because now even Daniel starts to mention his demands. Unfortunately, none of the kids and adults have a clue what it is that he’s telling them...
When Holly shows up at her doorstep, she’s about the last person that Nora wants to speak to, but she lets her in anyway.
“I heard it from Justin.” Holly says.
“How are you?” Holly looks around.
“I’ve cleaned out the fridge, I’ve made my grocery list, I’ve pulled some weed and I... I’ve... I’ve...” Nora can’t control her frustration anymore. With one swoop she slams the tray with fruit from the kitchen counter.
Holly watches how everything falls to the ground, but she doesn’t move at first.
“It’s all slipping away from me. William, Ojai, Ida, Brody, Sarah, Kitty, Kevin and now Elizabeth.” Nora starts to cry and only now does Holly wrap an arm around her.
“Not everything. You can still fix things with your kids.” Holly tells her. Nora shakes her head.
“Everyone is mad at me.”
“Kevin loves you. I’m sure he’ll forgive you if you apologise to him and I’m sure that you can see Elizabeth, if that is what you want.”
“The Wandells have taken over...” Nora cries.
“Reason more to go to Kevin and reclaim your position as the favourite grandmother. If anyone can, you can... I’ve seen you do the impossible, just by believing that it was the right thing to do. Remember Narrow Lake? You went for it. Because you knew you were right. You can still fix things with your kids. You just have to do it!” Holly encourages.
“Well, Olivia is out too.” Kevin smiles at his husband.
“She said, that she was so excited about the house, that she would never, ever sleep again.”
“Her head hit the pillow and she was gone.” Kevin laughs as he sits down on the couch, next to Scotty. Scotty takes him in his arms.
“Mateo is in his room. I’ve bribed him with cookies to stay there, so we’d have some privacy to talk.”
“Good plan.” Kevin says appreciatively, moving closer to Scotty so he can let his head rest against Scotty’s chest.
“Have you spoken to your mom yet?”
“No. I’ll let her take the first step.”
“Forget it. As long as she doesn’t apologize, I won’t forgive her.”
It remains quiet between them for a while, because each of them is working on his own thoughts, but then Kevin raises his head to look at Scotty.
“Are you sure, that you’re okay with the new house and all? I mean, it will take a lot of re-organizing.”
“Not really. The kids will have all their toys. I plan to let them organize their own rooms as much as possible and I plan to take a few weeks off entirely to concentrate on moving.”
“Take time off?” Kevin nearly falls off the couch.
“Yes, I’ve been thinking about it all weekend and ... We have to get out of here as this is just too cramped. I want to know that everything is fine, before I go back to work, so I can avoid running around like an idiot. I have a great staff and it’s not like I’m on the other side of the world. I
f there’s an emergency, I’ll be right there. I’ll continue working until we can move and then I want to make the move itself as quick and as painful as possible and just get it over with.”
“You’ve really thought this over, haven’t you?”
“Are you excited about the move?”
“Yes. I can’t wait for us to have a real house and a bit more distance between us and the kids...” Scotty’s explanation comes with a long, warm kiss and Kevin moans softly, because he wants so much more than just the kiss.
“I can’t wait either...” He wraps his arms around Scotty. “Can we continue this conversation in the bedroom instead?”
“We can. But quietly! The walls are paper-thin.” Scotty warns with a grin.
“I think we master that skill by now.” Kevin now laughs as well.
