***** Part 1/4 *****
“Hey, good morning, what are you doing? And why are you up already?” Kevin asks, walking over to Scotty to kiss him. Scotty quickly closes his laptop as if he’s worried, that Kevin will see what he’s doing or watching. The almost guilty reaction makes Kevin look up. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing. I woke up from a strange noise in Daniel’s room. Turns out he was awake and playing with his no-longer-white rabbit, quietly telling it all sorts of things in his own language. It was so cute to watch him ‘talk’ until he was back to sleep, but then, I was awake and I couldn’t keep sleep again and I didn’t want to wake you up. So, here I am.”
“No!” Scotty seems horrified at the idea alone. Kevin starts to laugh.
“The way you were reacting when I walked in, I almost believe you were checking out some site with X-rated stuff....”
“Well, I wasn’t.” Scotty denies again. “You just caught me off-guard while I was day-dreaming.”
“What on Earth were you day-dreaming about? Judging by the smile on your face. when I walked in, I’m starting to wonder, how big it is and does it come with batteries?”
Scotty starts to laugh and he teases:
“I’d hate to point out the obvious, but you
are the one with porn and “fun things with batteries” on your mind, not me.”
“Okay, spill it then. What were you daydreaming about?” Kevin teases back.
He leans over Scotty, pretending that he wants to kiss him again, but instead he takes the laptop away and, ignoring Scotty’s loud protests, he opens it. He’s stunned by what he sees on the screen.
“A house? You’re daydreaming about a house
?” He asks, slightly amused. Scotty seems a bit embarrassed by it himself.
“It’s not just any house. It’s not that far away from here. It has 5 bedrooms, a huge kitchen, a garden. It’s getting a bit crowded in this house sometimes... and it’s nice to dream a little bit of some place with more room to move your body.” Kevin sits down next to him. He’s more serious.
“I know,..” Scotty continues. “... we don’t know if Elizabeth can stay with us and for how long. Even if the judge decides that she can stay with us, what will she decide if and when either Tommy or Julia or both of them come back? It’s seems too big...”
“And it’s not on the market. This is someone’s personal blog.”
“The woman who owns it, Mrs Winters, is a customer of the restaurant. Two weeks ago, when it wasn’t so busy, she and I just talked a bit. She recently lost her husband, all her kids live at the East-coast. She wants to move there as well. In order to do so, she needs to sell the house. It will go on the market end of February/early March.
She told what she wants for the house and it’s a fair price. She’s almost done with the clean up, so it’s almost empty. I drove by the house. It looks very pretty.” Kevin listens to Scotty while reading more about the house.
“This house sounds rather perfect for us.”
“I know, right? It’s almost too perfect...”
“...And if it sounds too good to be true....” Kevin reminds Scotty.
“.. it usually is, I know.” Scotty sighs. “... but it sure is a pretty house.” Kevin can’t do anything else but agree.
“Scotty, we’re all very tensed while we wait for the judge to make up her mind. We could use a little distraction. Why don’t you call her later today and ask her if we can see the house? We can take the kids with us. Make it a bit of family day?”
“Are you serious?” Scotty asks.
“Yes, I am. It would be nice to have something else on our minds for a day.” Kevin smiles.
“Or at least that we look at it from another angle. If
Elizabeth can stay with us...”
“If...” Kevin acknowledges.
“So, you’re sure? I can make an appointment for us?”
“Yes.” Kevin confirms with a cheerful smile.
“Good, because that house is becoming an erotic fantasy to me by now.”
“Perhaps you should
look for the fun-articles with batteries. Here I know a few sites....” Kevin suggests.
The phone rings and Nora misses it a few times, before she manages to get it and pull it down under the blanket.
“What?!” She asks.
“Hardly sunshine, Brody, I was still asleep.”
“Nora, it’s ten in the morning!” Brody sounds genuinely shocked and Nora looks at the alarm-clock. He’s right!
“So? Am I not allowed to sleep in? I’m 64 years old, I need my beauty-sleep. Lots of it!”
She can hear Brody chuckle on the other side.
“You’re still the prettiest to me.” She can almost hear his smile in his voice.
“You’re not here. You can’t judge.” She mumbles.
“Have you had any news yet?”
“No. Judge is still not ready to give us her verdict. I didn’t think it would take this long. In fact, I’ve been up until three o’clock this morning.”
“Cleaned every kitchen cupboard... and the floor is spotless.”
“I’ll tell her to hold off her verdict a little longer, until your house is all cleaned up.” Brody jokes.
“Don’t you dare!” Nora warns him, but she smiles anyway.
“Well, at least we can’t say, that she made some quick choice just to get rid of the discussion.”
“I suppose you’re right.”
“You know, Nora, if things don’t work out, you can always come here and stay with me for a while...?” Brody suggests sweetly. Nora grimaces.
“I’ll think about it...” She replies, but in her mind she has already rejected the idea.
“I don’t know. I’d rather not talk to her. She’s so depressing. I don’t know what is wrong with her. She’s so grumpy, irritated and ready to fight over nothing. It’s no fun to have her around anymore.”
“Perhaps you should talk to her.” Brody suggest.
“As if I hadn’t thought of that myself.” Nora sighs. “But I’m not in the mood to chase away the only one who’s still standing by me on this.”
“If you’re going to say that I should give up,... Don’t say it.”
“Mateo, you have nothing to worry about.” Judge Zisman smiles. Mateo nods.
“I know. I haven’t done anything wrong.”
“Did Kevin or Scotty tell you why you’re here?” She asks.
“Yes and no.” Mateo answers
“What do you mean by that?”
“They told me that you wanted to ask all sorts of questions about them and me. But they didn’t tell me what to answer, only that I should be honest.”
“Can you do that?”
“Be honest? Sure.” Mateo shrugs. And Judge Zisman cannot hide her smile in time.
“I read here how you ended up with Kevin and Scotty, that must have been a major change for you?”
“Not really. My grandmother was very strict too. ”
“Do you like to live with them?”
“Yes. How could I not? Have you ever tasted the food Scotty makes? That
alone is a good reason to stay on his good side.” Mateo smiles and so does the judge.
“And your relationship with Kevin?”
“He’s amazing. A good lawyer. Always there for everyone. Even when they don’t deserve him to be their friend... When I first met him, I was afraid of him, because he was so cranky all the time... I didn’t know that he and Scotty had lost Daniel... But once I got to know him a bit better, I really grew to respect him.”
“There’s a difference between fear and respect?” She asks, just to test him. Mateo nods.
“I’m afraid of my dad, who’s a worthless loser. I have no respect for him.” His answer is as serious as can be and judge Zisman can hear the bitterness in his words.
“How is your relationship with the other children?”
“Olivia and Elizabeth are real girls. All giggly and such, but sweet. Daniel is so much fun. He ‘talks’ to me for hours. Sometimes I suspect that he’s Kevin’s and not Scotty’s.” Mateo jokes. “They are kinda like the sisters and brother I never had and, I know this sounds strange, but we’re so much alike in so many ways...”
“What do you mean?” Judge Zisman asks.
“We’re all kinda lost in our own way. Kevin and Scotty have told me how even they had been lost. So sometimes it just feels as if they know how Olivia, Elizabeth and I feel, because they know what it’s like to have the feeling of being alone.”
“They are an inspiration to you?” She asks.
“Well, of course, each in their own way. Everything that Kevin has done for me has made want to become a lawyer and do good work like he does.”
“He used to be penniless and homeless. Look at him now.” Mateo shrugs. The judge nods.
“How is your relationship with the other Walkers?” She now asks and Mateo thinks for a few seconds.
“Nora is great, when she’s not suing Kevin. Justin and Tyler are awesome. Kitty and Seth aren’t bad, but I don’t know them very well. Sarah and Luc, ... Sarah doesn’t like me.”
“She calls me a criminal.” Mateo shrugs.
The judge decides to drop the question.
“Mateo, I also have something else to ask you. A question I don’t really like to ask, but I’d like you to give me an honest answer?” She can see how Mateo braces himself for what is to come.
“This is an uncomfortable question for me to ask, I swear, but.... Kevin and Scotty are both gay... And you are an attractive young man. Have either of them ever...?” She doens't need to finish the question.
“No.” Mateo answers firmly. “They haven’t. They never did anything inappropriate. I shower alone. I can lock the door. They knock before entering. They occasionally give me a hug, but I don’t mind. It doesn’t feel weird or wrong, because I know that Kevin loves Scotty and Scotty loves Kevin and that neither of them is interested in me.”
“I’m sorry that I had to ask you.”
“It’s okay. I see why you feel you have to ask the question and I’ve given you my answer.” He looks her straight in the eyes and she believes that he’s telling her the truth.
“Thank you, Mateo, for your honesty. Just a few more questions to answer and this will be over.”
