***** Part 1/4 *****
“I don’t know how I will do without you all day, but mommy has got to go… and leave you ….. and mommy doesn’t like that…. But I’m sure that your daddy will take real good care of you… Yes!” Kitty coos, caressing her daughter’s face. Seth watches her and shakes his head.
“Kit, don’t go. You gave birth not so long ago. You’re recovering from the flu. No one will hold it against you, if you don’t show up. They’ll understand.” Seth tries again.
“No. I want to be there for my family and I pray that mom and Kevin will find some compromise.”
“I doubt it, if they haven’t by now, they never will.” Seth points out. Kitty sighs.
“I know. But Grace will be fine with you and I feel that I need to be there.”
“Alright. Just be careful… I love you.” Seth says, knowing he can't make Kitty change her mind anyway.
“And I love you.” Kitty kisses him tenderly.
“Are you sure you’re not coming?” Justin asks. Tyler shakes her head.
“Sorry, Cleo is sick. The flu has nearly decimated my staff. I have to work all day. Especially with Scotty at the court house.”
“Who’s taking care of Café 429?”
“Scotty and Kevin have everything well delegated. Angie works in the kitchen at 429. Daniel is with Bertha, Olivia with Wally and I think they plan to meet somewhere.”
“Has a birthday-party of one of her friends, that will take her mind off things.”
“Mateo?” Justin remembers to add.
“He had plans of his own. Anyhow, he’s old enough to look after himself.”
“That’s true. Well, I’m going to give Kevin my full support…”
“I have to say that I’m surprised the hospital didn’t ask you to work as well.” Tyler looks up at Justin.
Justin looks a little guilty, because he did have to make choice between Kevin and Dan.
“Well, there’s a huge number of staff sick at home, and they did ask me, but I told them that I couldn't today. Though I will work tomorrow.”
“Oh, no, must you? I had planned to take the afternoon off.” Tyler’s shoulders sink.
“I’m afraid I’ll have to. Dan is counting on me. You should have told me something sooner.” Justin replies apologetically and he gives Tyler a quick kiss.
“Alright then, but you’ll be free tomorrow-night?”
“Yes.” Justin confirms with a grin and a kiss. “I’ll be all yours, to do with as you wish.”
“You might regret saying that…” Tyler teases.
“I hope so.” Justin smiles mischievously… And now, I have to go.”
“I should have gone. To the courthouse, I mean.” Saul sighs.
“I understood what you wanted to say.” Jonathan answers, still a bit sleepy. He wraps his arm even stronger around Saul’s waist. “I’m not going to stop you. If you wish to go…”
“I do, but I don’t.” Saul answers.
“I like a man who can make a decision.” Jonathan smiles and Saul joins him in the smile.
“It’s not that I don’t want to be there and be supportive of Kevin, but I don’t want to be there and hurt Nora… So, I guess that staying in bed with you is a good alternative.” Saul plays with Jonathan hand, which rests on his belly.
“Personally, I believe it was a good idea to not go there. You don’t need to chose sides. Kevin is not alone and neither is Nora. We’ll pick up what is left once the dust has settled. We’re too old for this.” Jonathan teases.
“Speak for yourself.” Saul replies, pushing his back even closer to Jonathan’s chest.
“Anyway, I have to go to Café 429 later on. I can’t let Angie do everything on her own.” Saul informs Jonathan, making it clear that he can’t spend all day in Jonathan’s arms.
“If you need help…”
“I’d love it if you came with me.” Saul admits with a smile.
“It’s a good thing, that I didn’t eat this morning…. I think I’m going to be sick.” Scotty says, definitely looking a little green as the elevator takes them up to right floor in the court-house.
“I hope you’re not coming down with something now. I hear the flu has plans to go epidemic again. I’d hate to be selfish, but I need you here with me today.” Kevin feels Scotty’s forehead to see if he has a fever, but he doesn’t even feel warm. Scotty smiles at Kevin’s sweet touch.
“Did you sleep at all last night?” Scotty wants to know, hoping that focusing his attention on Kevin will make him feel better.
“Not much.” Kevin admits.
“Are you sure you’re even ready for this?”
“I’m ready. Ready as I can be…” The doors open and Kevin steps off the elevator. Scotty follows him, still a little queasy. Kevin is about to turn into another hall, when he pushes Scotty back towards the elevator and then up against the wall.
“Mom and Sarah are here.” He says, suddenly tensed.
“Yeah, I just saw them.”
“Did they see you?” Scotty asks, Kevin carefully looks around the corner again, but Nora and Sarah seem to be talking to each other and their lawyer, John Griffith.
“I don’t think so…. Alright, here’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to walk up to that bench over there, see it?”
“We’ll pretend, that we don’t see them, we will have a casual and cheerful conversation…”
“Kev, I’m a chef-cook, not an actor.” Scotty reminds Kevin. Kevin sighs, slightly irritated that Scotty doesn’t get it.
“We have to give the impression that we’re confident of our case… A bit of psychological warfare.”
“I’m not sure I can pull that off.” Scotty still looks a little pale, his stomach still fluttering, but not for a good reason. Kevin cups his husband’s face and quickly plants a little kiss on his lips. Scotty is quite aware of what it means to Kevin to display his feelings like this in public. And at the courthouse, of all places!
“Trust me, love. We’re on my turf. They will not win.” He smiles confidently and it helps Scotty to be more comfortable as well. “Deep breath!” Kevin orders sweetly. Scotty follows his husband’s order and then he lets Kevin gently guide him to the mentioned bench. Kevin sits Scotty down so that he’s with his back to Sarah and Nora.
He sits down as well and smiles confidently at Scotty. His fingers entwine with Scotty’s and he sees that Scotty breathes more easily.
“Tell me your recipe for guacamole.” Kevin suddenly says.
“What?” The question is so unexpected that Scotty can’t help it, but he starts to laugh.
“That’s the smile I want to see.” Kevin says gently. “Ah, there’s Mr Carter.” Mr Carter indeed walks up to them and they shake hands. Kevin is glad to see that their little moment of laughter put some color back on Scotty’s cheeks and he sincerely hopes that Scotty isn’t coming down with something after all.
“So, are you ready?” Mr Carter asks Kevin. Kevin nods.
“I’m well prepared.” Kevin answers.
“Good, shall we go in and take our seats?” Mr Carter proposes.
“Good idea.” Kevin agrees and motions Scotty to go in first.
“He didn’t even look at us.” Sarah fumes.
“Psychological warfare.” John Griffith answers stiffly. He’s not happy that Kevin’s attitude had managed to get under the skin of his client. “He’s just trying to make you believe that he has the upper-hand.”
“I can’t believe that we’re actually here. I had expected him to change his mind.” Nora sighs sadly.
“In cases such as these, egos can really get hurt and no one is more likely to be stubborn than someone with a bruised ego.” John says philosophically.
Nora doesn’t quite agree, but she tries to relax.
“Mom, stop pacing around like that.” Sarah says grumpily
“Why are you so grumpy, Sarah? You didn’t have to come here.” Nora points out.
“It’s not that. Paige is giving me the silent-treatment.”
“Oh. That’s terrible.”
“I’m starting to see how deep it must have hurt Dad when Kevin did the same thing to him.” Sarah adds, a little angry. Nora considers pointing out that William was the one who had started ‘the war’, but she doesn’t want to see Sarah even more upset.
“Why is she giving you the silent-treatment?”
“Long story that involves that little criminal that Kevin has living in his house.”
“Mateo is not a … okay, I see you don’t want to hear that…. What has Paige done?”
“Ran away from home.”
“Is she alright?” Nora is immediately concerned.
“Yeah, yeah, Kevin and Mateo found her at the bus-station, ready to go to Joe.”
“Joe? He’s in Phoenix, isn’t he?” Nora asks.
“Close to Phoenix.”
“I’m glad they found her though. You must have been so grateful.”
“I would have been, but then Kevin got all neurotic.…”
“Neurotic?” Nora asks.
“He kicked me out of his house, I’m not welcome there until I apologize to that little creep.”
“I assume you’re not talking about Kevin?”
“No. Mateo. …. I will never apologize to him. I’ve told Paige to stay away from him. And now Paige sees herself as the reincarnation of poor Juliette, separated from her Romeo.” Sarah answers sarcastically . Nora just wishes that Sarah would stop talking. Sarah’s whining voice makes her even more nervous.
“Alright, I made it.” Kitty says. She gives Nora a quick hug.
“Are you sure you can…? Seth told me that you had the flu and that you were terribly sick and…”
“I’m still alive, mom, Seth took real good care of me.” Kitty immediately calms Nora down.
“I wanted to drop by, but Seth blocked me from coming in, saying you needed your sleep.” The quick grin on Kitty’s face doesn’t escape Nora’s attention.
“I love him so much.” Kitty gives everyone a heavenly smile and Nora shakes her head. “So, how are Kevin and Scotty doing? They must be worried too?” Kitty dares to say.
“Kevin is just fine. He just went in and he was laughing with Scotty. I don’t think he’s that nervous.” Nora can’t help but point out. “But let’s see how he feels when he sees us come in…”
“Not ‘us’, mom, I’m staying out of this.” Kitty says.
“What? What do you mean?” Nora asks.
“Well, it just feels wrong either way. I agree and disagree with both of you. I can see where you’re coming from though and I think that the judge will have a hard time to make a decision.”
Nora feels disappointed by Kitty’s choice, but at the same time, she’s glad that Kitty isn’t openly supporting Kevin either.
“I’ll go talk to Kevin.” Kitty says, but Sarah takes her arm.
“Maybe it might be smarter if you stay with mom. Kevin has his own army.”
Kitty isn’t happy with Sarah’s words, but she can’t put her finger on what it is that bothers her. She can however see that Nora is indeed very unhappy, so she sighs and sits down with her mother, oblivious to the fact that Kevin has seen her and he quietly wonders if Kitty will remain neutral as she had said she would.
“Hey, good idea to come here.” Mateo smiles at Paige.
“I know. The library is a public place, where mom can’t ban you from, no matter how hard she tries. Besides, I like it here. It’s usually rather quiet and I can study here, without Cooper bothering me.”
“Can’t say that I’m really unhappy about the outbreak of flu amongst the teachers.” Mateo says and Paige hums in agreement, as she continues to eat the sandwiches that Scotty has made for Mateo. “Hungry, sweetheart?” Mateo teases. Paige nods.
“I could eat a horse, I swear. Mom has decided to go ‘biological’ on me.”
“Let’s say that I’m dying for something simple on my sandwich, like chicken, cheese, ham, and not different layers of vegetables…” Paige shivers with horror and Mateo laughs.
“Don’t worry. Since I told Scotty that you’re stealing my sandwiches, he’s made some extra…” He winks
“Theyredelifiouf.” Paige says, mouth still filled with food and Mateo shakes his head with laughter.
“No eating in the library!” A voice reminds them of one of the rules. Paige startles, but then she shows her prettiest smile.
“I’m sorry, Mrs Redfern, I forgot. My uncle’s sandwiches are so delicious, I couldn’t wait to taste them.” She apologizes.
Mrs Redfern thaws a bit when she sees that it’s Paige, who was breaking the rules. Paige is one of her favorite students. She always likes those kids who love to spend time at the library.
“Oh, Paige, it’s you. Well, don’t let it happen again?”
“No, Mrs Redfern.” Paige and Mateo both react politely and Mrs Redfern looks at the half-eaten sandwich on the table.
“Would that your uncle who owns Café 429?” She asks. Paige nods. “My best friend and I have been there several times. Such delicious food.” She sighs.
She spends one more envious look at the sandwich and Mateo offers:
“I have two more sandwiches. I could give you one? They are just as delicious as this one…?” Mrs. Redfern can hear the tempting call of the sandwiches and wonders if it’s ethically correct to do this…
“I have more than enough with one sandwich?” Mateo adds. He can see that she wants to accept, so he hands over one of his sandwiches to her. “Trust me, the sandwiches are as delicious as the food he makes at Café 429. Scotty doesn’t believe in cutting corners when it comes to food. And I’d love to share….”
She takes the bag and smiles at both of them.
“Thank you. Don’t eat so publically though. We have rules here.” She replies with a wink and leaves Mateo and Paige alone. Paige starts to laugh.
“She’s so cool.”
“I agree. I used to be so scared of her, but ever since I started to get better grades, she was suddenly a lot kinder too.”
“She’s someone who doesn’t like it when kids waste their time.” Paige shrugs.
“Then I suggest we just don’t waste our time then.” Mateo smiles.
