***** Part 4/4 *****
“There she is!” Mateo yells, immediately recognizing Paige amidst the crowd. “Paige!”
“Mateo! What are you doing here? .. Uncle Kevin?”
“Paige! You scared the hell out of your mom.” Kevin tells her and she’s glad he’s not angry with her.
“Tell that to your mom.”
“I’m not going back, uncle Kevin. I’m going to dad. I’m sick and tired of it all. I don’t like living in the same house with mom anymore. She has changed somehow.”
“It’s been a rocky year for her.” Kevin tries to explain.
“That doesn’t give her the right to be nasty to Luc. Or bite Cooper’s head off at every opportunity she gets, or tear up a Valentine’s Day card that I got from Mateo. And it doesn’t give her the right to pass judgment on him.”
“I agree. But it also doesn’t give you the right to run away and leave you brother sick in the living-room.”
“Coop? Why? What’s wrong with him?” Her eyes become big with fear and Kevin is glad to see her anger immediately gone.
“Too much candy, ice-cream and chocolate... Sick as dog. ... Which you would have known about if you had been there and looked after him, as you were told.” Kevin’s reprimand is gentle, because he can see that she feels very guilty.
“I know. I’m sorry.” Paige says again.
“Can I talk to Paige? Alone?” Mateo asks Kevin.
“I’ll be right over there.” Kevin warns and he takes a few steps so that he’s out of range to hear what they say.
“Paige, you have to come back.” Mateo quietly says, taking her hands in his own.
“Why? Even if I did, I’d be grounded for life and my mom will make sure that I will never be allowed to see you again.”
“Because if you’d be gone, I wouldn’t be able to see you at all. Not even in school. And I’d hate that. I want to see you every day.. Even if it’s just a glimpse.”
“Idiot!” Paige punches him, not too hard, in the shoulder.
“I really like you too.” Mateo grins.
“Uncle Kevin isn’t looking at us right now.” Paige suddenly says after a quick glance at Kevin.
She wraps her arms around Mateo’s neck and kisses him firmly on the lips. Mateo reacts by taking her in his arms and pushing her a little closer to his body. But after the quick reaction he carefully pushes her away again and when Paige looks up, she sees that he’s blushing.
“Don’t. Kevin will ....”
“... kill you, I know.” Paige nods.
“I kinda like it when you finish my sentences...” He replies and Paige has no idea why he suddenly starts to laugh.
Brody sits down on the bed and listens to the sounds in the house. Nora hasn’t come up yet. She’s in the kitchen. Probably cleaning. He understands that it’s just too much energy and her fear for the court-case that would start tomorrow, but it says something about her. It’s suddenly quiet and he can hear climb up the stairs with slow steps.
“I’m sorry.” She says immediately upon entering the bedroom.
“About what?” Brody asks.
“The way I reacted tonight. You, of course, have every right to disagree with me. Also about Elizabeth. I believe that I’m doing the right thing however.”
“I’m not going to fight.” Brody says.
“Neither will I. And I won’t fight with you over this whole thing with Phoenix either. If you want to go, go. I’m not coming with you, but I somehow believe that you hadn’t expected me to either. Am I right?”
“Maybe. I knew I couldn’t take you away from here... But I also know that I just can’t stay here forever either. This is your house. Yours and William’s. Me? I’m just a guest... I continue to feel that way. I’m just.... a guest...”
“I’m sorry you feel that way.” Nora means what she says.
“Me too. I thought I could settle down with you. I love you so much, that I sincerely believed I could it. For you....”
“You are who you are, Brody. And you’ve always been a drifter. I remember that I once asked you why Tommy was always leaving...
You told me that ‘some of us can’t stay put’... You weren’t talking about Tommy, you were talking about yourself. Which I should have known.”
“I really wanted to make it work. I really want us to be together...”
“I know. Sometimes you just can’t have what you want.” Nora answers
“Or we have to compromise. And travel. And call each other. Find other ways to stay in touch. I don’t want to break up with you... Not now that we’re finally together.”
“Me neither.” Nora replies in all honesty. “So, maybe it’s better if you do take that job and we’ll search for a way to be together.
Like that we can both be happy and be where we want to be and, who knows, maybe it will spice up our love-life.” Brody grins at Nora’s enthusiasm. He’s happy that she has found a way to give all this a positive spin.
“I love you, slugger!” Brody says and he pulls her down for a kiss.
Kevin opens the door and Sarah marches in. She takes one look at Paige, sitting at the kitchen-table with some hot tea, surrounded by Bertha, Elizabeth, Mateo, Olivia and Wally.
“So there you are.” She immediately lashes out a Paige.
“I’m so sorry.” Paige says.
“You can consider yourself grounded for quite a while, young lady.” Paige bows her head at her mother’s words.
“Sarah…” Kevin starts and Sarah turns around on her heels.
“I bet I have you to thank for all this. You and that little criminal over there.” She points at Mateo.
“We wouldn’t have found her if it hadn’t been for him. You could try to be a bit more grateful.”
“Grateful? For what? This wouldn’t have happened, if it hadn’t been for you.”
“What? How can this be my fault if Paige ran away, to be with Joe, because she’s sick and tired of you!” Kevin immediately returns the insult.
“How dare you! I’m trying the best I can to be good mother.”
“And what do you think I’m trying to be? I….”
“Will you just stop it!” Paige suddenly jumps up. “Mom, I did it all on my own. Mateo and Uncle Kevin didn’t know anything about it, so, please, stop yelling at them. Be mad at me, but not at them!”
“Paige, go downstairs and to the car. I’ll be right with you.” Paige turns to Mateo, who makes a quick movement with his head, quietly telling her to go. It hurts them both to leave each other like this, but they have no choice. The door closes behind Paige and Sarah turns to Kevin.
“I just want you to know that I’m now, more than ever, supporting mom. You’re a lousy father and you have no control over these kids.” Mateo jumps up, but Wally grabs his arm and Bertha places a hand on Olivia’s shoulder to calm her down.
“You’re the one with the run-away teenager, remember?” Kevin replies coldly.
“Yes. I know that she believes that she’s in love with Mateo. But she’s not! He’s not good enough for her. He’s a nothing, a nobody and…” At that moment she realizes that she’s gone too far. The temperature in the room seems to drop considerably and the look on Kevin’s face is beyond anger.
“Get out! You have exactly two seconds to get the hell out of my house. And don’t come back unless you’re willing to apologize to Mateo. I don’t know what alien bug crawled up your ass, but I’m completely done with you and bad tempered attacks on me and my family. Now, get out!” Kevin’s voice seems to fill the room and Sarah back away.
She opens the door and is about to close it behind her, when she turns back to Kevin.
“I’m going to make sure that you lose this case. And then you’ll never see Elizabeth again!” She slams the door behind her and they can hear her walk away… Kevin’s shoulders sink.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Mateo whispers quietly behind him and Kevin picks himself up mentally when he hears a sob. He turns to Mateo. He’s with him in two steps.
“It’s not your fault. I don’t know what Sarah’s problem is, but it’s her problem, not yours. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
He wraps his arms around the young man. Mateo is still not used to all the hugging, but he slowly relaxes.
“I’m sorry.” He repeats and he quickly brushes away his tears. Kevin smiles and with his thumb he catches a tear that Mateo missed, earning him a smile in return.
“Uncle Kevin, if grandma wins, does that mean that I’ll never see you again?” Elizabeth asks, panic on her face. Mateo and Kevin look at each other, then Mateo turns around.
“You shouldn’t listen to that crazy aunt of yours.” He laughs.
“Mateo is right, honey. Nobody is going to take you away from me.” Kevin agrees.
Sarah pushes Paige ahead. In the hall, Paige starts to go up the stairs when Sarah calls her back. She hadn’t said a word during the entire ride back home.
“You’re grounded for a long time.”
“Whatever.” Paige replies tiredly.
“You will not see that Mateo-kid again…” Paige shrugs. “… You will not go to your uncles or Café 429 again.” Again Paige shrugs. “And you’re coming home, right after school. No more trips to the library and other places you can meet him. You’re banned from the computer… Give me your phone.”
Paige stiffens, but hands Sarah her phone.
“Can I go to bed now?” Paige asks.
“Get lost.” Sarah answers angrily. Paige is barely two steps up when Luc steps out of the shadows, where he has heard word Sarah has said.
“Sarah, is it perhaps not better if…”
“Luc. Don’t give me any parental advice, you have no idea what it means to be a parent.” Sarah turns around and leaves for the kitchen.
“J’en ai marre! … I’m fed up!”
“She doesn’t care. She’s not even welcome anymore at uncle Kevin’s house.” Paige says.
“Kevin is just a bit angry….”
“No. It’s over. She went too far. She can’t come back unless she apologizes to Mateo.”
“That will never happen.”
“No… Probably not.” Paige sighs. “I’m going to bed.”
“Goodnight Luc.” Paige is glad to see the door of her room, but she has one more stop to make.
“Coop?” She whispers.
“Paige? Mom’s mad.”
“I know. How’s your tummy?”
“Hurts a bit. Are you in trouble?”
“I’m sorry. If I hadn’t eaten all that candy, I wouldn’t have gotten sick.” Cooper says. He feels Paige’s lips on his forehead.
“Don’t be silly. I should have been here for you.” Paige replies.
She lies down on the bed next to her brother. In the darkness, Cooper turns to her.
“Paige, I no longer like it here. Mom’s always angry over something.”
“I know. I’m going to write dad and ask him to come back. Get us away from here.” And with that promise, she comforts her brother.
Scotty is somehow not surprised that Kevin is still up at one o’clock in the morning..
“Shouldn’t you get some sleep. It will be long day tomorrow.”
“I tried to, but … couldn’t sleep.”
“I heard from mom and dad what happened. With Sarah.” Scotty says.
“Yeah, that was tough. Sarah is no longer welcome here. I hope that you agree with that. I don’t know what I did to her, or why she’s so mad at me, but she had no right to belittle Mateo the way she did.”
“No. Of course not.” Scotty agrees.
“She can pick a fight with me whenever she wants, but not with my kids.” The words ‘Mateo is not your kid’ burns on Scotty’s lips, but he doesn’t say them. He knows that Kevin is fond about the young man. “And I know that, technically speaking, Mateo is not ‘my kid’, but… you understand what I mean, don’t you?”
“You read my mind, as usual…” Scotty smiles. “Now put away those books. I want to sleep and I can’t do that with the lights on.” Docilely Kevin puts away his work and he lies down. Scotty turns off the light and within seconds he spoons up against Kevin.
“There’s nothing more relaxing than having you in my arms.” Scotty hums.
Kevin doesn’t answer, but only pushes himself closer to Scotty. What follows are some sweet kisses and caresses. They don’t really arouse Kevin, they just make him more relaxed and soon enough he starts to drift away. His body seems to get heavier and he’s about to fall asleep when a high-pitched scream pierces through the quiet home.
Scotty and Kevin are both immediately awake.
“Was that Olivia?” Scotty asks, already nearly out of bed.
“No. Elizabeth.” Kevin answers, getting at the door first. Both he and Scotty crash into the room of the girls.
Elizabeth sits up straight, her eyes big and filled with tears.
“They were taking me away… They were taking me away… I didn’t want to go!” She starts to cry and when Kevin sits with her, she climbs into his arms like a little monkey. She sounds so heart-broken that Kevin doesn’t know what to do.
“Maybe she should stay with us tonight?” Scotty suggests.
“Can I stay with you as well? I don’t think that I will be able to sleep again tonight.” Olivia says.
“Sure.” Scotty says.
“It will be busy in your bed, because look at who’s awake as well.” Mateo enters with a shocked and pouting Daniel on his arm. He hands Daniel to Scotty and Daniel makes it clear that he has no intention to let go. Scotty looks at Kevin and Kevin motions him to go to the bedroom.
“I’m glad we ordered a larger bed…” Scotty tries to joke.
“Me too.” Kevin laughs. “Though this was not exactly the sort of ‘fun’ I planned to have in here.” Scotty lies down and Daniel immediately crawls in his arms. Olivia joins Daniel. Elizabeth seems to hesitate.
Kevin takes Mateo’s arm.
“Listen, you don’t have to play along, but you’re part of the family too. If you want to stay..?” Mateo looks at Elizabeth’s sad face and he takes her hand.
“Do you mind if I stay with you…? I’m a bit worried myself now…”
“I don’t mind.” Elizabeth answers, she look up to Kevin though. Mateo lies down next to Olivia and soon enough he’s stuck between her and Elizabeth. Kevin is the last to join. He turns off the light. It takes a lot of giggles and a bit of pushing and shoving for everyone to find their place.
Slowly silence falls in the bedroom and one by one they fall asleep. First Daniel and Scotty, both exhausted. Olivia manages to tease Mateo a bit more, but then they are quiet as well. Eventually, the only one still awake is Kevin, staring into the darkness, while Elizabeth sleeps in his arms.
