Robert couldn’t hide his grin if he tried. This had been a strange evening. He had liked Kitty from the moment he met her. There was something about her that just attracted his attention.
The door of his house fell shut behind him and he leaned against it. Kitty had apologized at least a thousand times, and he had explained to her, at least a thousand times that he had the time of his life.
He loved the house, big and spacious and he could imagine what it looked like without all the hoopla. He quickly reviewed who had met. There was Ida, the grandmother, very forward and a bit insensitive to the people around her. Opinionated at best.. There was Kitty’s mother, Nora, who was not what he expected. He sort of had an idea of a motherly caring woman, you’d hardly notice. Instead she stood her own ground and he admired her, although they didn’t share political views.
Then there was Joe and Sarah… Sarah was related to Kitty. And looked rather …. Flexible? Making love on the couch. He hadn’t seen that in quite a while. He watched from a distance and saw her embarrassed looks in the kitchen and Joe… what fun. There was Tommy and Julia, he spoke with Tommy a bit, he was also a Republican so that conversation went smoothly..
Less smoothly was the introduction with Kevin. He saw the adoration for Kevin in Kitty’s eyes. She told him that she respected Kevin and she wasn’t lying. And he vaguely worried if Kevin had enough cloud to keep Kitty away from him. But then he remembered the way she had said “Kevin… talk?.... now…Please.” and he laughed his worries away. At the same time he made a mental note that he should keep Kevin and Jason miles apart for his brother’s own good.
And he also quickly met with Justin, the youngest one. Someone with his own baggage and there was something familiar in Justin’s pain, that Robert could relate to. In all it had not been a wasted evening (as he feared), he flirted with Kitty (and she flirted back), he believed he had made a good impression on them (except Kevin) and compared to his own family they were quite normal..
He wished secretly that he could meet with them again. It had been a strange evening in all and he had not enjoyed himself like that in years. He smiled at the memory of Kitty. He really liked her and had the impression that he had gotten to know her a bit better this evening. And he had to admit he liked what he saw and it reminded him that he was very slowly but certainly falling in love with her
