***** Part3/4 *****
The door of Café 429 opens and Kevin enters with Daniel on his arm, Olivia and Elizabeth right behind him, while Mateo keeps the door open.
“Grandma Bertha!” Olivia wraps her arms around Bertha and Bertha is visibly happy to see her.
“Oh, look at you. You’re so pretty. I brought you some gifts…”
“Not pink shoes again, I hope?” Olivia asks, making a face. Scotty’s heart sinks. This is it
. Now his mother will be offended and her stay will become a disaster.
“No, don’t worry, I won’t make that mistake again.” Bertha laughs and Scotty can’t believe his eyes.
“And who’s this?” Bertha coos, picking up Daniel. Daniel stares at her, wondering who this strange lady is. Kevin closes his eyes momentarily. Daniel is going to cry, he’s sure of that. Daniel is going to take one
look at Bertha and burst into tears and Bertha will be all offended and… Daniel’s sweet laughter fills the room. He likes Bertha.
“He’s so gorgeous. He reminds me of you when you were his age.” There’s a tenderness in Bertha, that Scotty hasn’t seen in a very long time. A tenderness she had once reserved for him, but that had gone lost long ago, even long before he had come out as gay, but now it’s there again and Scotty is surprised.
“I’m sorry, Kevin, I didn’t mean anything by it.” She suddenly apologizes.
“No offense taken…” Kevin answers flabbergasted, he feels uneasy by her kindness. It’s just too much
. “This is Mateo. He’s staying with us as well, while his grandmother is recuperating.” Bertha and Mateo shake hands.
Kevin doesn’t want to explain too much to Bertha at the moment.
“And this is Elizabeth… She’s my niece.” Kevin’s hands rest on Elizabeth’s shoulder. Elizabeth looks Bertha over, up and down. She’s very aware of the tension in Kevin and Scotty.
“Well, actually, I’m uncle Kevin’s daughter, but not really, because Tommy is supposed
to be my father and grandma Nora and uncle Kevin are fighting over me, because my mom and dad are missing and the police is searching for them….” She offers the information casually and Bertha is visibly shocked as she stares up at Kevin.
“It’s … complicated
.” Kevin smiles awkwardly and Bertha nods reluctantly. Scotty enters with hot chocolate and some cupcakes to chase away the hunger. Bertha is surprised to see that Olivia and Mateo go straight for their homework, while Elizabeth picks up a box that contains her drawing materials.
Kevin expects that Bertha will only give attention to Daniel, seeing how he’s after all, Scotty’s biological child, but he’s pleasantly surprised to see Bertha try to talk with all the children.
“I don’t know what worries me more. This Bertha... or the fact that I want the old Bertha back.” Scotty softly tells Kevin.
“I don’t want the old one back, I sort of like this one.”
“This new and improved Bertha frightens me. I don’t recognize my own mother!”
“Maybe it’s scary, but if she’s really taking a step in our direction, we should encourage her and not back away from her.”
“She’s not taking 'a’
step in our direction, she practically moon-walking. She just slides
in our direction.”
are the one who scares me….. Honey, if she’s for real, then it’s great. If she’s not for real… she’ll fall out of character soon enough and the world will be normal again.”
“Maybe you’re right.” Scotty says, not entirely convinced.
Saul plays with the invitation-card. It turns around and around between his fingers, but Saul doesn’t notice it. His mind is miles away.
“Penny for your thought?” Jonathan asks teasingly.
“That would be too much.” Saul mumbles. “They are worthless.”
“Are you still worried about Nora and Kevin?”
“Nora is so stubborn. She so focused on Tommy, that she can’t see what she’s doing to Kevin. It will cost her dearly.”
“Perhaps you should also take the reverse into account?”
“What do you mean?”
“Are you perhaps not too busy defending Kevin, because you don’t like Tommy that much? Are you sure that it’s Kevin you support? Or is it Tommy
you wish to punish?”
Saul opens his mouth to protest Jonathan’s way of thinking, but then he changes his mind.
“Good question.” He acknowledges.
“Thought so.” Jonathan smiles. Saul sinks into deep thoughts again and Jonathan continue to read his mail, until Saul looks up at him.
“No, I don’t want to see Tommy punished. I just believe that Kevin is right.”
“I can’t stand this, Jonathan, our wedding is in two weeks and my sister and my favorite nephew at each other’s throats…”
“Your entire family is divided right now.” Jonathan says and he sees that Saul looks miserable.
Once again, Saul plays with the invitation.
“Would you like to cancel our wedding?” Jonathan asks and Saul gasps.
“No. No, I don’t want to do that to you. I love you. I want to marry you and….”
“And I love you, Saulie. I love you more than you’ll ever know.”
Saul falls quiet when he sees how sincere Jonathan is. Jonathan’s hands take Saul’s.
“And it’s because I love you that I propose we postpone the wedding.”
“Again?” Saul asks.
“I know you well enough by now, Saul. You need
your family to be there. But you can’t invite and
Kevin. It will end in a huge fight between them, no matter how much we ask that they remain civil.
I don’t want our special day to turn into a bloodbath. Nora is your sister, but Kevin and Scotty mean a lot to you too. As they to me. If they can’t be there together, then we should wait until they can.”
“Jonathan, I hate to do this to you.”
“But it’s the most sensible thing to do. And, Saul, it changes nothing about how I feel for you. I still love you. I still want to marry you. And I will
marry you.” He kisses Saul gently on the lips and Saul takes him in his arms. Jonathan makes the kiss even more passionate and the invitation slips through Saul’s fingers and falls to the ground.
With a loud cry Kitty wakes up from her little catnap. She feels as she can’t catch her breath and it takes her almost a minute to calm down and stop shaking. Her hands slide over her belly.
“I’m sorry, baby, mommy just can’t seem to catch some sleep.” She cries.
Seth enters the room.
“Were you having a nightmare again?” He asks. Kitty nods and she takes the paper tissue that Seth offers her.
“Kit, you have to do something. This can’t go on.”
“I know, .. but what can I do?”
“Have you ever spoken to Evan’s biological mother again?”
“No.” Kitty shakes her head slowly. “Trish doesn’t want to be in touch with me, with us, or Evan…”
“Well, shouldn’t that fact alone give you some peace of mind?”
“It doesn’t. Not in my nightmares.”
“Kitty, you have to find a way to face your demons, before you get really sick.”
“Kevin has to give up his case.”
“No. This is not about Kevin, you told me it had happened before, when it had nothing to do with Kevin.. What Kevin is doing triggers the nightmares, but this is about your
fears.” Seth’s words are calm, but strong and Kitty becomes quiet, remembering that Kevin had said the same thing.
“You’re right. This can’t go on.” She says.
“What are you going to do?”
“Face my demons.” She answers and she carefully gets up to turn on her computer. It takes a little googleing, but then she finds what she’s looking for. She dials the number on her screen and then waits patiently.
After being connected to the wrong department a few times, but finally she gets to cardiology.
“Hello? This is Kitty McCallister. I’m looking for Trish Evans? … Can you ask her to call me back?” Kitty gives her telephone-number.
“No, it’s not very urgent, but can you ask her to not let me wait too long…? I’m nine months pregnant and about to give birth…” She laughs, even though her eyes aren’t revealing much joy. Seth lets out a content sigh, glad that she decided to listen to him and do something about her nightmares.
“This is delicious.” Bertha says with appreciation and Wally blushes.
“I’m glad you like it.”
“I never knew you could cook so well.”
“Neither did I.” Wally jokes.
It feels strange to sit at a table with Bertha. It’s been a pleasant evening so far, but somehow Wally keeps waiting for the blade to fall.
“Wally, can I ask you a question? Because I think you know Scotty and Kevin better than I do?”
Wally’s places his fork on the table. Here it comes! The put-down! Of Scotty. His marriage to Kevin. The way he and Kevin raise their kids… One wrong word from her and he swears he’ll kick her out.
“I’m not sure that Scotty is very happy….” She starts Wally opens his mouth to protest, but Bertha places her hand on his.
“I don’t mean this as an insult to either Kevin or Scotty. I think that Scotty believes that he’s doing the right thing in standing by Kevin, but that he doesn’t believe it’s the right thing to do. I’ve listened to the whole story about Elizabeth as Scotty told it to me and that little girl has been through quite a lot.”
“She’s a sweetheart.” Wally can’t help but say it.
“I agree. She’s a very nice girl.” Wally knows Bertha well enough to know that she’s genuine.
“Scotty seems tired, exhausted and worried. He just kept checking his watch all the time. He was very nervous. And I don’t think that it’s only because I’m there. I think that Kevin and Scotty are biting off far more than they can chew.”
Wally looks at his dish and he picks up his fork again to eat a bite. It gives him time to think, which is something that Bertha usually doesn’t give him. It’s his defense-mechanism to avoid difficult confrontations. But this time, Bertha doesn’t bulldoze all over him. She waits patiently for his answer. This is unknown territory for Wally.
“I don’t know if that is true.” He eventually dares to say. When she doesn’t immediately cut him off, he continues: “Scotty and Kevin have had a few quite difficult months. However, the two of them are doing the best they can to be good partners to each other, good fathers slash guardians to the kids and good bosses to those who work for them.”
“It’s a very thin line. I don’t want to see Scotty in so much stress that it will destroy his marriage..” Bertha manages just in time to keep the ‘as well’ to herself, but Wally knows what she was about to say.
“But if Scotty’s cheating couldn’t break them up, than I don’t think this will either.”
“Scotty did what
?” Bertha asks shocked and Wally wishes that he had kept his mouth shut.
“Scotty cheated on Kevin, two years ago…”
“And Kevin forgave him?” Bertha can’t imagine.
“Yes, they got through it. It made them stronger than ever.” Wally replies. He can see that Bertha has to make some mental adjustments on this. “You didn’t expect that, did you?”
“No. I think I still see Kevin as too big an influence on Scotty’s life. I do believe that he loves our son. I’ve come around to that thought. It’s just…
Do you remember that first time we met Kevin? In my mind Scotty was still the 18-year old that left the house. And here was this older man who wanted to marry our son, who spoke to us as if he knew our son better than we did…” She shrugs, unhappy with the memory.
“And he did. He still does.”
“So, you think I have no reason to worry?”
“If you do, talk to Scotty and Kevin about it.”
“Or maybe I should just ‘zip it’.” Bertha says, remembering Kevin’s words after Ida’s funeral.
“Tommy? Hi. This is Kevin. I hate your voicemail-message and we need to talk. Brother to brother. Father to father. Things have happened in the past and I don’t want
to hurt you. I never would hurt you on purpose. But this situation with Elizabeth is out of control. I’m not kidding. Call me. If you love Elizabeth, call me
.” Kevin switches off his phone.
Justin enters the hotel-lobby and looks around. At the reception-desk he sees Tyler, who’s in an apparently interesting conversation with someone. She smiles at the man and nods, smiles again. A little touch on his arm, another nod. Justin smiles too. She’s so graceful and kind.
Finally she sees him too and she says her goodbye to the person she’s talking to, while waving in Justin’s direction. He can see her quickly move over to him and he can’t wait to feel her arms around him or the touch of her lips on his.
“There’s my favorite paramedic.” She smiles.
“Your favorite? Are there others?”
“Not as favorite as you.” She laughs. “How was your meeting with Seth, tell me you didn’t really go surfing?”
“No, don’t worry, too cold, but I still owe him a lesson and he’s willing to take it.”
“Terrific! I’m sure you’re a good teacher.” She smiles.
“Tyler?” Justin makes Tyler turn back to him. “I got a call from Rebecca this morning.”
“Oh…” Tyler’s smile freezes just a little, but not that much.
“She wanted to call mom, but called me instead…”
“How was she?”
“Happy. She just got married to her new boyfriend.” Justin answers.
“Oh… How do you feel about that?”
“I guess it’s normal to feel weird when your ex gets remarried.”
“No, not that kind of weird. Just … I didn’t care much about it. I mean, I don’t want to be back in a relationship with her. I want her to be happy, but I’m also glad that it’s not me she married. Does that make sense?”
“I guess. Maybe you still love her, that will not go away, but you’ve accepted that she has moved on and that you’re moving on as well.” Tyler suggests.
“Brrrr, that sounds so … mature
..” Justin jokes.
“Oh, Justin, you’re finally becoming a big boy..” Tyler teases in return.
“Can I very childishly asks you to have some ice-cream with me?”
“Make sure I get a little paper umbrella on it, and I’m all yours.” Justin takes Tyler in his arms and he kisses her.
“I love you, Tyler Altamirano.” He sighs between two kisses.
“Yes, yes. Hold your horses. I’m coming down the stairs! Just remember I’m not fifty anymore.” Nora scolds as she walks up to her front-door. She pulls open the door and is surprised to see Holly standing there. “Holly?”
“I was so sorry to hear about all your troubles with Kevin and Tommy….” Holly starts.
“Oh, who am I kidding?...” Holly continues. “It’s not entirely untrue. I do know how bad you must feel, you’re always so involved with your family, that this must be devastating to you…”
“.. but why are you really here?” Nora asks.
“I wasn’t sure if you could use a shoulder to cry on, but to be honest, I just had
to get away from Rick, Rebecca and David. They’re gone all day, making pictures, which bores me to death and at night they want to go all adventurous and eat ‘local things’. I haven’t had a decent steak in weeks and I’d kill for a chicken sandwich.”
“You had to escape.” Nora understands.
“It was either them or me.” Holly replies dramatically and Nora starts to laugh.
“You’re welcome to stay here.”
“No. I can get a hotel-room. No problem.”
“Why don’t you go to the “June flower”? It is a lovely hotel.”
“Wouldn’t you consider that a betrayal?”
“I’m trying to only be angry at Kevin and not with Scotty or the kids. I’m even going to call and see if I can see Olivia and Daniel again…”
“That would be a wise decision. There’s no need to alienate your grand-children.”
“Oh, Holly, I forgot to congratulate you with Rebecca’s wedding. Was it pretty?”
“It was all very simple and sweet, and Rebecca was beaming with happiness. I hope those two will soon give me a beautiful grand-child.”
“I hope so. It’s such a blessing.” Nora answers generously. “So, do you want to stay here or at the hotel?”
“I’d rather have my own privacy and give you yours.. How’s Brody?”
“Oh, great…” and Nora leads Holly towards the garden, where Brody is.
