***** PART 4/4 *****
Justin and Tyler are greeted by Olivia, when they enter Kevin and Scotty’s home.
“Scotty isn’t ready yet. He just got in and Kevin is on phone with Nora, so let’s hope the pasta doesn’t burn in the meantime.” Olivia informs them and Tyler gives the pasta a look, but she’s confident that is not the case.
Mateo introduces himself to Tyler and helps Olivia with setting the table, while Tyler takes a struggling Daniel out of Scotty’s arms, to put him in the baby-chair. Scotty gives her grateful smile, mumbles something about a recipe and wanders off again.
“He and his restaurant.” Olivia shrugs.
“He’s gone.” Kevin says as he enters the living-room. Justin and Tyler look up, because Kevin sounds angry. Scotty is still half-dressed in his cooking gear, looking through a cookbook for a recipe he knows must be in there somewhere and, at first, he doesn’t pay much attention to Kevin’s words.
“What do you mean?” Scotty replies, who’s first thought it with Mateo, only to remember that he just saw Mateo.
“Tommy.” Kevin explains.
“What about him?”
Scotty’s mind tries to juggle Mateo, the recipe and Tommy, but it somehow doesn’t work.
“He left. Like I just said.”
“What are you talking about?” Scotty now closes the cook-book to focus his full attention on Kevin.
“I just spoke to mom. On the phone. Tommy just packed his bags, put all his things in his car and drove off. He left her note.”
“How long will he be gone?” Justin asks and Tyler is now all interested as well.
“Indefinitely.” Kevin answers sourly.
“What?” Tyler now asks.
“Until he’s over his current depression. Whatever. …. I’m so done with this. He’s so unreliable….”
“This means that I have no one to control Café 429.” Scotty and Tyler look at each other, realizing that this will give problems.
Only Mateo and Justin catch the concerned look Kevin gives Scotty. This is just about the last thing Scotty needs right now. Justin is about to say something, when Kevin’s phone rings and, after a look at the caller-ID, Kevin gets up and leaves the table to retreat to the bedroom.
“Kevin, it’s me, Tommy...” Tommy starts.
“You left.” Those are the only words he gets as a reply from Kevin.
“I know, listen….”
“I’m done listening.”
“You have to understand...”
“It is all been so hard. Julia. Elizabeth. This has been going for three, four years now and I’m tired of fighting.”
“Then don’t start them anymore.”
“Kevin, I’m sorry about everything.”
“Don’t give me those bull-shit excuses. Get back here. Scotty….”
“Would you just forget about Scotty for a second, I just….”
The moment the words leave Tommy’s mouth, he knows he picked the wrong ones and whatever Tommy wanted or planned to say, Kevin will no longer listen. And, indeed, Kevin has had it beyond this point.
“You know what, Tommy? You’re right. Forget about Scotty, and while you’re at it, forget about me and my family too, delete my number, erase me from you memory, don’t ever call me again….”
“Kevin!...” Tommy sounds clearly shocked.
“You’re the worst brother in the universe, Tommy. I’ve had it up to here with your irresponsible behavior. There isn’t a sincere bone in your body, is there? Scotty wanted to help you out by giving you a job and what do you do? You revert back to what you always were.
A selfish, lying, conniving little creep, who doesn’t have the balls to correct his mistakes and always expect others to bail you out of trouble. You cry and whine about how miserable your life is, when the only one who’s to blame for that is you, and no one else. And I’ve accepted you nonsense for a long time.
This time, however, you hurt the man I love, you hurt my husband, and I’m drawing the line here. I won’t accept it anymore. Scotty didn’t deserve what you just did. Scotty works his ass off to be there for all of us, even you, and you repay his kindness by being a complete and total jerk.
I’ve put up with your crap, because I’m your brother and I was raised with the idea that family should stand up for each other, but no more. You once cut your ties with Justin, when you had had enough of his drug abuse and now I’m cutting my ties with you because I’ve had enough of your drama. Don’t call me again. Don’t ever call me again!”
Kevin breaks all communications and flings his telephone across the bedroom. It lands on the floor in front of Scotty, who sheepishly picks it up.
“Something tell me that you were talking to Tommy, that Tommy’s not coming back and that you’re very pissed off.” He says carefully.
“I’m coming, baby. Mommy is here. And soon we’ll be back together….” Michelle wakes up from an uneasy sleep. She doesn’t bother to freshen up or eat something. She takes some pills, gets strong coffee from the motel-lobby, she takes her keys and gets into her car.
For a moment, she needs to catch her breath again, and wait for the world to stop spinning and moving around her. The car-lights seem to burn extra bright tonight and she has to close her eyes tightly a few times, so she can focus enough to see where she’s going. She finds her way to Café 429, parks in the shadow of a building, where the street-light is broken.
She’s far enough away to not get too much attention. She sees people come and go. Eventually she sees Justin leave with a girl, a pretty girl. Michelle loses track of time, the pills make her sleepy and she dozes off a few times, until, unable to stay awake any longer she lies down on the front-seat and falls asleep.
Scotty looks up from the dishes when Mateo enters.
“How was your grandmother?”
“Cheerful. The nurses take real good care of her, but her leg hurts her so much, she says. Where are the others?”
“Justin and Tyler have gone home. Kevin and Olivia are trying to put Daniel to bed.”
“Do you need any help with those?” Mateo asks, pointing at the dishes, but Scotty shakes his head.
“No. I’ll just put them in the dishwasher and I’m done. Go find the others.”
“Is that your phone ringing?” Scotty now listens too.
“I think it is. Can you get it?” Scotty asks, lifting up his wet hands. Mateo fishes the phone out of Scotty’s pocket and opens it.
“ID blocked.” He says and Scotty sighs, while Mateo escapes to Daniel’s bedroom.
“Scotty Wandell.” Scotty says, placing his phone between his ear and his shoulder.
“Hi, Scotty, it’s me, Tommy.”
“Tommy,…” Scotty’s face gets a serious frown and he quickly dries his hands. “Where are you…?”
“I just called to say I’m sorry to have left you like that. It was not right towards you.”
“Tommy, you have to come back. Julia and Kevin are very worried about you.”
“What?” Scotty’s concern gets replaced by confusion. “What do you mean ‘good’?”
“Let them worry about me. Think about what they said to me. How they hurt me.” Scotty’s jaw drops, he can almost hear Tommy pout. For a few seconds he’s too astonished by Tommy and he can’t believe that Tommy really believes his own words, but then he realizes that Tommy does.
“Tommy, thanks you for your apology. It’s appreciated, but…. I agree with my husband. Don’t call me again. Ever.” And Scotty turns off his phone, suddenly feeling extremely tired and empty. He places his phone in one of the cup-boards. He no longer wants to clean the kitchen, he just wants to be with Kevin…
He realizes that all the Walker-drama is wearing him down. He looks through the open door of Daniel’s bedroom. Kevin is on the bed. Daniel is sitting between his legs, sitting up, playing with the book that Kevin valiantly tries to read to Daniel. Olivia lies on her belly and prevents Daniel from turning the pages too fast.
Mateo sits at the end of the bed and smiles at the scene before him as Kevin and Olivia try to calm down an over-excited Daniel. It overwhelms Scotty a bit. Even more so, when Kevin looks up at him, a bright smile on his face. The smile fades when he sees Scotty’s face however.
“Is everything alright, honey?” he asks and Scotty shakes his head. Olivia looks over her shoulder at her father and even Mateo seems a bit worried. Even little Daniel lets go of his book.
“I just spoke to Tommy on the phone. He’s the most entitled little piece of ….” Scotty angrily starts.
“Kids in the room!” Kevin, Mateo and Olivia say simultaneously and well-orchestrated and Scotty can’t help but laugh. Kevin reaches out to Scotty.
“Come here. Forget about Tommy. He isn’t worth it.” Kevin soothes as he drags Scotty closer on the bed. Scotty sits down behind Kevin. He lets his chin rest on Kevin’s shoulder so he can read with Kevin.
A smile from Daniel later, Scotty forgets all about Tommy. Kevin and Scotty start to read together, clowning around, straying from the original story to create their own and soon enough Mateo and Olivia are in tears of laughter and, though he doesn’t quite understand what is going on, if the others are laughing, so is Daniel.
It’s quiet in the study where Nora sips her hot tea. Holly went to bed early, feeling tired and disappointed after her not-so-successful day. Nora looks through an old family-album, with pictures taken just after she and William had gotten married. Her belly is already showing under the dress.
She looks at the pictures and tries to remember some things of her own. Holly’s question had sparked her own curiosity.
“So, William, what was your history? What made you who you were? You suddenly showed up in my life. Why me?
You said you’d be a better catch than Brody, but why offer that chance to me? And not someone else? …. Someone like Holly? If she was more your type, why pick me? Why blackmail Brody out of my life? If you did know that you were not Sarah’s father, why raise her as if she was yours?
Why? It would have made more sense that you would have rejected Sarah. You so easily rejected Kevin for being gay, even though he was your flesh and blood, but somehow you loved Sarah even though she was not yours? It doesn’t make any sense, considering what I know about you.
But then… What did I know about you? How well did I know you? How many lies have you told me? If you could lie to me about Holly and Connie and Ryan, why would I assume that something else would be true? Maybe I need to find out who William Walker was, just like Holly does.”
“Can I ask you something?” Olivia asks and Kevin looks at her.
“Do you regret that you can’t make Elizabeth your daughter?” Olivia sees how Kevin nearly drops the laundry.
“What..? Ahm… Why… Why would I want Elizabeth as my daughter, she’s Tommy’s child.”
“Paige told us that she isn’t. That she’s really yours, like Daniel is really Scotty’s.” Kevin lets out a deep sigh and sits down on the bed.
“Olivia, you must forget that you ever heard this. Just completely forget it. It was not Paige’s place to gossip about this. Elizabeth doesn’t know and she cannot know, not until Julia or Tommy or both of them decide to tell Elizabeth what happened. Elizabeth can get very hurt if she finds out from someone else.”
“I won’t tell her…” Olivia promises, but Kevin can see that it wasn’t the answer she was looking for. He cups her chin and makes her look up at him.
“What do you really want to know? If I prefer her over you?” Olivia looks away, clearly embarrassed and Kevin smiles.
“Olivia, I love you. You are my daughter now and Daniel is my son and nobody is ever going to change that again. And Elizabeth? She is Tommy’s daughter and nobody is going to change that either. If anyone would take you or Daniel away from me, I would be heartbroken.
And I imagine that Tommy would feel the same, if it happened to him. So, no matter how angry I am at Tommy, I would never do that to him.” Olivia wraps her arms around him and holds Kevin tight and Kevin returns the hug and he kisses her goodnight after which he turns out the light.
“She did what?! Oh, God, Kevin, I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t apologize to me, Sarah. It’s Julia and Elizabeth I’m worried about. It wasn’t Paige’s place to gossip about things like that. Can you imagine what would have happened in this got to Elizabeth?”
“I don’t even want to think about it!” Sarah agrees.
“So, you’ll have talk with Paige?”
“I will. Again, I’m sorry. I can’t believe that his is happening.”
“I can. Aside from dad, no one in this family can keep a secret. I warned about that.”
“Yes, you did.” Sarah acknowledges. “So, do you think Tommy will be back soon?”
“I don’t know. I don’t care.” Kevin replies..
“He’s your brother.”
“Not anymore. I’m done.”
“Oh, come on, Kevin, we all know that if he really needs you…” Sarah laughs.
“… He can go to hell. If you, Kitty and Justin want to continue to hold his hand and coddle him, fine with me, just don’t bother me with it.” Kevin is not laughing and Sarah gets the uneasy feeling that Kevin is awfully serious.
“Kev, I know that you two had a fight…” She starts.
“I don’t care about the fight, Sarah. Tommy and I have fought before. Many times. What I cannot forgive him for, is what he did to Scotty. Whatever issue he has with me, he had no right to let Scotty pay the price for that. I've never taken my issues with him out on Julia either.”
There is so much resentment and disappointment in Kevin’s voice.
“Kevin, sleep on it a bit. You’ll feel differently tomorrow...”
“If you say so.” But it’s clear that Kevin doesn’t believe it. “Anyway, I’m going to find my husband and get some sleep. Goodnight.”
“Well. I just checked on Olivia and Mateo. They are both sound asleep.” Scotty tells Kevin and he sits down on the foot of the bed to undress.
“So, Tommy called you too?”
“Yes, he did.... What a jerk.”
“I’m sorry. After all the time and effort you put in him, he just up and abandoned you and it makes me so angry. You’re my husband and I love you and … I feel like this personal attack on me and my family as well. It wasn’t enough that he ruined his own, now he’s trying it with mine.”
Kevin is visibly upset and Scotty realizes how hard this all must be on his husband.
“Slow down, babe, we’re not ‘ruined’. It is inconvenient, I will give you that, and we need to discuss our next steps, but we are not ruined. Your brother will not come between us. You’re not responsible for what he did.”
“I feel responsible. You told me to back off with Elizabeth.”
“And you told Julia and she wants you in Elizabeth’s life. This is between Tommy and Julia and you’re caught in the middle.”
“I should have told Julia to go away, like Tommy asked.”
“And hurt Julia? Why? Because Tommy hasn’t stabbed in her in the back enough? Tommy is your brother, yes, but Julia is a friend, to both of us. Elizabeth is your … niece. ” The little hitch doesn’t go unnoticed to Kevin, but he doesn’t react to it. “It's only natural that you want to be there for them as well.
Plus, and I hate to say this, but right now, I feel so much more respect for Julia than for Tommy and I most certainly prefer to see Julia, and not Tommy …. I hope you don’t mind my saying this?” Scotty puts his arm around Kevin’s shoulders and pulls him closer until Kevin’s head rests on his shoulder.
“No, I don’t.” Kevin answers. “You have every right to feel the way you feel.”
“I know Tommy is your brother and that you love him, but he keeps making the same mistakes. He acts like Julia is still his wife, when Julia has it made it very clear that he’s out of HER life. She is more than fed up with him and his shenanigans.
For any inch Jules tries to give him, he feels he can take a mile. It’s never enough. He acts like everybody owes him something. It’s spinning out of control. And all that nonsense over Elizabeth and you? You are her uncle, you’ve always behaved that way.
And what I’m about to say, I don’t say because you’re my husband, but because I honestly believe it: I have never seen you prefer Elizabeth over anyone else. And I know that I’m not allowed to say this, and that maybe it’s not politically correct, but Elizabeth is not stupid.
She walks in here and she sees her mother laugh with us. Julia has fun, she’s cheerful and that rubs off on Elizabeth naturally. It also works the other way around. Julia cried over Tommy, cried over moving away, she argued with Tommy, sometimes right in front of Elizabeth.
Every time mommy and daddy are together, mommy ends up upset and it’s daddy’s fault, not uncle Kevin’s or uncle Scotty’s. She’s a child and children see these things rather black and white.”
“What am I gonna do now? What are you going to do? There is Café 429 to think off, the hotel, the kids. I wanted one night off with you, just for our family and now we can forget about that altogether. All thanks to Tommy.”
“Kevin, I have an idea. Listen to me?”
“I’m listening.” Kevin says.
“It ten o’clock at night and we’re both tired and drained. How about we take a long hot shower together? Relax a bit? And after that, we snuggle up to each other in bed and get some sleep?” Scotty suggests.
“Wasn’t there supposed to be something else that we used to do between snuggling up and falling asleep?” Kevin asks, raising an eyebrow. Scotty smiles teasingly.
“Can’t remember that far back…”
“Lucky for you, I do remember.” Kevin jokes in return and he takes Scotty’s hand. “While we’re in the shower, how about I refresh your memory?” Scotty smiles at Kevin and lets Kevin take him to the bathroom.
Michelle wakes up with a shock. She's all stiff from sleeping in a bad position and her back aches. Café 429 and the houses around it are dark. It's 2.16 am according to the little digital clock in Michelle's car. Michelle starts her car and slowly drives by Café 429.
"Soon, my baby Daniel, soon mommy and you will be together again... I promise." She smiles and drives away.
