“ I don’t like it, Nora.” His voice soft and calm as ever.
“What don’t you like?” Nora’s are thoughts disturbed.
“The way Jonathan treats Kitty. We have raised a strong daughter and he has no right to keep making decisions for her, as if she’s incapable of doing so herself.”
Nora sighs. Why is she always pushed into a place where she has to judge Kitty? It is difficult enough trying to keep a cheerful front, to keep her mouth shut and she’s running out of ‘politically correct’ answers to ‘keep the peace’. She loves the fact that Kitty is back. She wants Kitty back, because she missed Kitty.
But she agrees with William, she could do without Jonathan’s constant decision-making where Kitty was concerned. And at the same time, she has to smile. In a way Jonathan is a lot like William, which is why she cannot dislike him as much she should. He’s just as driven as William. He knows what he wants and he will pursue that without hesitation.
She doesn’t doubt that he has Kitty’s best interest in mind, but she wonders if his idea, of what is best for Kitty, matches with what Kitty believes her best interests are. She cannot help but hope that Kitty will take the television-job and show Jonathan that she STILL has a mind of her own and knows how to use it.
“If you don’t like it, do something about it.” She eventually says.
“Maybe you should talk to her.” William says dryly, turning another page of the newspaper.
“Me?” Nora raises an eyebrow.
“She’s already angry with you, worst that can happen is that she’ll never talk to you again…. But she will still like me.”
Nora looks at William and only now does she see the laughter in his eyes.
“Oh you….!” She flings the dish-towel at his head and he laughs out loud and she cannot help but laugh too, but after the initial laughter she seriously continues: “What will you do?”
“I don’t know yet. Maybe I should point out to her, how in control of their lives Jonathan is. I still think it’s our job to point it out to Kitty. I’ll talk to her after her birthday-dinner tonight. Just for tonight, I want all of us to have a good time and give Kitty a great birthday party.” Nora smiles again and runs her fingers through his hair.
He looks so tired lately, maybe he should take a few days off work, it’s not as if Sarah and Tommy can’t make it without him, maybe they can go somewhere, a short holiday, a long weekend away, so he can rest a bit. She will discuss it with him … tomorrow morning……
