Kevin moans in his sleep and shifts in his chair. The sun is slowly turning, but hasn’t reached the chairs just yet. However Kevin, feeling the wind play with his clothes, pulls up the sheet on his legs a bit higher and makes another little noise. He likes dreaming about Scotty.
***** CHAPTER 2 - BOY GETS TO KNOW BOY BETTER
“Who will you have to deal with? ... Well, there’s my father, William Walker, patriarch, the big boss. Built our family-company Ojai, a produce-company, up from nothing to the successful place it is today. The man is very tough, considers himself very honest….”
“How is your relationship with him?”
“Strained… and that’s putting it mildly. We don’t hate each other. I respect the man for what he has accomplished. He respects me for the lawyer I’ve become… But because I’m gay, I’m not ‘a man’ in his eyes. A ‘real man’ has a house with a white picket fence, 2.5 children, ad dog, a cat and, above all, a wife. That is the ‘natural’ way of the universe….”
“He sounds just like my mom.” Scotty grins. “Between that and her hope, that I’ll ‘snap out of this 'ridiculous phase’ and her incessant praying for my ‘recovery’, I felt the strong need to flee my home when I was just 17.” Scotty suddenly says, not really sure where the need to be honest suddenly comes from.
Kevin nods however. It’s not the first time he hears a story like that.
“Then comes my mother, Nora. Amazing woman. I love her. She’s the best, honestly. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do for me and she loves me unconditionally, but that love also lead to a lot of arguing between her and my dad, when I came out.
It was awful. I felt very guilty for creating so much trouble, but my mom told me, years later, that she’d do it all again, because that is what mothers do…”
“Not my mother…” Scotty says quietly, before putting on a more cheerful face. “Your mother sounds like my dad. I would literally not have survived if it hadn’t been for him.”
Again there seems to be an silent understanding between them and Scotty starts to believe that this job might be easier than he feared it would be. In fact, he’s starting to enjoy this more and more.
“So, imagine the joy this week will bring. Dad will still hate me, because I’m gay. And my mom will over-compensate by lavishing all her love on me, until it I want to scream…
So who’s next? That would be my sister Sarah. CEO of my dad’s company. Theoretically, she’s in charge of Ojai. Practically, however…., she isn’t allowed to order a package of paperclips without my father’s consent. She’s happily married to Joe Whedon, he writes jingles. Most recently that one ‘sunny soap’ one….”
“God, I hate that jingle. It so awfully cheerful.”
“I agree. Every time I hear it I just get aggressive.” Kevin confesses, making both of them laugh. “Sarah and Joe have been married for 10 years, are completely devoted to each other and to their two kids, Paige and Cooper.”
There’s a bit of sadness in his words and Scotty asks carefully what is on his mind.
“When Paige was born, they asked Tommy to be his god-father… I got that. He’s the oldest brother, was dating his now wife Julia, Sarah and Tommy had always been close… And then Coop was born… and they asked Justin to Coop’s god-father….
It shouldn’t bug so much, but …. It does.” Kevin shrugs. “Sarah said, that it was because Justin lives closer to them than me… and maybe that is just it, but I still believe that it’s because I’m gay.”
“That has to hurt.” Scotty sympathizes.
“I try not to think about it, but sometimes it just stings again…, you know?”
“I know….” Scotty nods. “So after Sarah and Joe…. Tommy and Julia?”
“No. Kitty McCallister, married to Senator Robert McCallister…”
“The anti-gay Republican?” Scotty asks.
“Is there another one?” Kevin shrugs. “I avoid him as much as I can. Kitty has her mind set on becoming the Governor’s wife, I hope she’s happy and I hope she will keep her support for her husband’s homophobic plans to a minimum.” Kevin replies defiantly, so Scotty quickly changes the subject by asking if Robert and Kitty have children.
“No, they don’t. Kitty doesn’t want them. She gets frantic when Robert’s kids, from his previous marriage, come over during the holidays. I enjoy hearing her freak out.” Kevin grins, before continuing more seriously.
“Then there’s Tommy and Julia. No kids. Tommy recently found out he’s sterile… Who knows, maybe in the future they will adopt a child, just don’t bring it up… It will upset Julia terribly, she’s a teacher and would have been such a good mother… Plus, I like her…”
“Justin and Rebecca. Our Romeo and Juliet.”
“Isn’t that overly dramatic?” Scotty asks.
“No. Rebecca Harper is the daughter of one of my dad’s biggest competitors, Holly Harper. If you really want to see my father explode, tell him how lovely the idea is that there will be Walker-Harper merger…. Beng! Guaranteed!”
“I’ll keep that mind.” Scotty’s vivid imagination conjures up the image of an exploding William Walker. “Okay, anyone else?” Kevin shakes his head. “We don’t have much time to really built a good back-ground story, but we can do a lot in two days. How about we stay close to the truth, where my identity is concerned? That is easier than conjuring up lies about myself on such short notice.”
“Fine.” Kevin replies, feeling that Scotty knows more about how this works than he does.
“My name is Scotty Wandell. That is my real name. I am an apprentice sous-chef at San Estephe. I do this work because I need to pay for my tuition and being an apprentice is not exactly the way to financial freedom.
I hope that, I will eventually be good enough as a chef, to give up this line of work, because as interesting as it was, when I started, six years ago, this is not the job I wanted to have when I grew up… Do you like that story well enough? Would I fit the sort of boyfriend you’d usually fall for?”
“No… but then my previous relationships always failed. So, perhaps it’s time to grow up and chose a boyfriend based on something else than good looks, money on the bank and the size of his … oh, never mind.”
“Don’t worry. I’ve never had complaints in that area either….” Scotty teases and after giving away that bit of information, Scotty gets up.
“Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll get my overnight bag out of my car and I will sleep here tonight. Might as well start straightaway.”
“Here? Tonight…? Uh, yeah. Of course… I’ll get the guest-room ready.”
“The guest-room? Kevin, … sweetheart… I’m your boyfriend… for a week anyway… Do you usually let your boyfriends sleep in the guest-room? Rather Victorian, don’t you think?” Scotty teases, bending over the still-seated Kevin, cupping his chin and giving him a small kiss on the lips.
Kevin is flabbergasted by Scotty’s actions, but not for long.
“I see what you mean,… I just didn’t expect… Oh,.. I don’t know what I expected, really.”
“Don’t worry. I’m used to that.”
“You will want to park your car under this building. I have two designated parking-spaces.”
“I’ll come with you…” Kevin takes his keys and Scotty follows him back to the elevator.
It is weird for Kevin to suddenly have someone in his life and his private space again and though he’s glad that Scotty is easy to adjust to and rather flexible in his own understanding of Kevin’s hang-ups, but by the time they are ready to go to bed, Kevin starts to feel a bit nervous.
Noticing Kevin’s growing discomfort, Scotty walks up to Kevin, as he stands in front of the mirror in the bathroom. He gently caresses Kevin’s side, a comforting gesture.
“Relax.” Scotty’s voice is calm. “We can do this. Your family will be amazed by us and our love. It will be perfect. Trust me.”
Kevin bites his lip. In the mirror he can see Scotty stand behind him, looking at him with confidence, but not knowing that the last person who said those words to Kevin ended up cheating on him. The words ‘trust me’ don’t inspire must faith in Kevin. Scotty pushes Kevin carefully into turning around.
He wraps his arms around Kevin’s waist and the next thing Kevin feels are Scotty’s lips on his. A shock runs through Kevin. How long has it been since he got kissed by someone? Considering the hunger that the kiss awakes in Kevin, it must have been much longer than he thought.
He hesitantly replies to the kiss, but after a few seconds pulls away from Scotty.
“What’s wrong?” Scotty asks.
“This is going very fast.”
“True…” Scotty starts, but Kevin interrupts him.
“I’m sorry, I guess, I should be more sophisticated about this. I’m supposed to be this man of the world, who has seen it all. As you pointed out, I’m paying quite a nice amount for your services, so I shouldn’t make such a fuss over having sex with you. I should just go ahead and go to bed with you… But that is not me. That is not who I am. I’ve never before in my life hired a …”
“…Prostitute?” Scotty offers, showing no signs of being insulted.
“Yes… well, that is a bit harsh… I was looking for another word, .....” Kevin stammers, he doesn't want to hurt Scotty's feelings.
“Kevin, it’s okay. Just because I work for a fancy company, where the prices are extremely high, because they are very picky about their clients, doesn’t alter the fact that you pay me to be your companion and for having sex with you. It is a part of the service I provide…
Whatever name-tag you want to put to it, male prostitute, gigolo, whatever… I am what I am and you want to hire me to do what I do. You want someone by your side who is good-looking, charming and educated – your words, not mine – to show off to your family how successful you are, not just socially, but also privately.
And I just pointed out, that you can’t have pass us off as friends, lovers, soul-mates even, if our relationship is completely platonic. Your family is going to see right through your scam and you’ll never hear the end of it. … How wrong am I in my last assessment of your family?”
“You’re completely right. It’s just…” Kevin stops for a moment to search for the right words. “… When I heard about the family-reunion, I panicked and then I remember someone telling me the agency you work for. It sounded like such a good idea.. in theory. I can afford it. It would just be for a few days… but now, I’m not so sure anymore. Like you said. If they find out…”
“They won’t.” Scotty smiles.
“How can you be so sure of that?”
“Because, I’m good at my job. I can convince your family that you and I are inches away from tying the knot, but I need you on my side for that. I can’t do it on my own. Let me do what I do best… Honestly, trust me. I guess, seeing how you wince whenever I say that, that those words have been used by someone, who didn’t stick to his promise… But I will. I must. It’s my job.
I create an illusion, but to create that illusion I need your full cooperation. You’re single, so there’s no commitment to anyone else. You’re handsome, it won’t take much of my imagination to fake being your lover. You’re smart, so am I. We’ll get through this…”
“I… I just have to trust you?”
Scotty nods slowly and watches how Kevin seems to come to the conclusion, that Scotty is right after all. He looks up at Scotty and wraps his arms around Scotty’s neck. He brings Scotty’s mouth closer to his own.
“We’re going to blow them away, huh?” he asks softly.
“Yes.” Scotty whispers, his hand is in Kevin’s neck and, with his body, he slowly forces Kevin back to the bed.
“It can’t go wrong?”
“I’m going to do everything I can to make it right.”
Kevin falls on the bed, Scotty crawls on top of him. Kevin’s spreads his legs, allowing Scotty closer. Kevin’s entire body screams for the tenderness that Scotty is giving him.
“Kevin…” Scotty moans…. “Kevin…!”
“Kevin!!! Wake up!!!” Slightly confused Kevin opens his eyes. “Are you in pain? You were moaning so loud….”
“Scotty? What are you doing here?”
“I came home early. I knew Nora had to go, I didn’t want to leave you alone for so long.”
“That’s very sweet, honey… but I took my pills, they make me sleepy, I’m fine.”
“You were moaning, like you were in pain.”
“I had a very sexy dream…. About you.”
“Tell me all about it in a few seconds… First, drink this lemonade. You need to stay hydrated.”
