Summary: AU – A fourth player is added.
Scotty moans Jason’s name. Jason’s lips are on his skin and Scotty runs his fingers through Jason’s hair, needing even more of that tenderness. He spreads his legs even further, but before Jason can do something more, the telephone rings. With an irritated moan Jason lifts his head. It’s his phone.
“I have to take this.” He says, trying to breathe normally. Scotty feels annoyed, but knows that Jason has to do this. “Hello, Mr Buchanan… yes… I’m sorry… Sure, I’ll be there as soon as I can…” Scotty rolls his eyes.
“Jase, it’s a Saturday morning. Can’t it wait….?”
“Mr Buchanan’s mother is dying….” Jason answers. Scotty sighs, that indeed can’t wait.
“Will I see again before tonight?” Scotty says.
“Don’t know. Depends on how much the family needs me.”
“I need you too.” Scotty replies, hoping he doesn’t sound too whiny.
Apparently not, because Jason bends over to him to kiss him and he enters the bathroom with a smile. The phone rings, this time it’s Scotty’s, so Scotty picks it up. He listens with surprise to the caller. It’s from his work. His chef… Scotty nods impatiently, then stammers a ‘yes, yes, of course’ and then puts down his phone again.
Jason comes in, dressed appropriately, and Scotty nearly bounces off the bed.
“I got something to tell you.” Scotty says excited, but Jason keeps him at arm’s length.
“It will have to wait. I have to go.” He says.
“I’m serious, Scotty. Bye.” He gives Scotty a quick kiss and opens the door.
“… but I’ve just been asked to become a new head-chef….” Scotty yells as the door closes behind Jason. For a second Scotty hopes that Jason will come back and congratulate him, but the door remains closed, so Jason probably didn’t hear him.
“Not that I want to criticize….” Scotty starts.
“But…?” Kevin asks.
“The rooms are a bit… empty?” Scotty tries.
“I know.” Kevin sighs.
Scotty still likes the house. Kevin has shown him the changes made and Scotty has to admit that the study is gorgeous with its warm brown and green colors and lots of wood. And he understands that Kevin is very proud of the many books he has. It’s obvious why this room is Kevin’s favorite place in the house. It’s warm and cozy.
“It seems like you had an exact idea about the study and your bedroom, but nothing for the rest of house…”
“That pretty much explains it.” Kevin smiles. “I guess I had sort of expected things to fall into place once I was in this house, but I can’t give the room more warmth.” He says about the living-room.
“What did you with the kitchen should be considered criminal.” Scotty says.
“Really? I haven’t done anything to it.. Just a fridge and a freezer and …”
“A micro-wave.” Scotty is almost accusatory.
“I don’t need more.” Kevin defends himself.
“Blasphemous!”Scotty reacts, but he smiles to take the sting out of the word. “If this kitchen were mine….” He sighs.
“Then what?” Kevin asks. “It’s not that I don’t want to, but I have no ideas as to what to do with the kitchen. I mean, I can make a sandwich or heat food up in the micro-wave.”
“Sincerely, Kevin. Micro-wave food?” Scotty shakes his head.
“Hey! Not everybody had a live-in cook, like my mom has. If you’d live here, it would be different, I’d make the kitchen exactly as you’d want it. You are after all the expert.”
“If only.” Scotty sighs.
“What? Not happy at Casa Nora?”
“I love you mom. She’s fantastic. But Jason and I have no privacy at his place at the church and I feel uncomfortable having sex with him under your mother’s roof. Her room is two rooms further down the hall….”
“Tell me about it.” Kevin says with a mischievous grin. “I was so happy that Tad had a house of his own. My biggest nightmare was my mom or dad walking in on me while I was busy with my boyfriend, which meant I rarely took a boyfriend home…” Kevin laughs.
“I see what you mean... Jason doesn’t mind if Nora sees us kiss. Nora is very cool about it, but the one with the problem is me. I’ve been on my own for so long, it just feels weird to do it under your mother’s roof… Let’s change subject… I don’t want to day-dream about what I could do in a place of my own. I can’t afford it, Jason doesn’t want it.”
Scotty sighs and Kevin places his tea before him.
“You’re right…” He takes a sheet of paper. “What would you change in this kitchen, if it were yours? Daydream with me…” Kevin invites and Scotty looks up at him with a smile, suddenly feeling more cheerful.
“Oh, is it that late already?” Scotty asks. “I have to go to work.”
“I thought you were free today.”
“Nope. Two of the other cooks are both down with the flu.”
“Blame it on the weather. It’s been hold, cold, rainy, sunny and everything in between these last few days. You can almost see a cold run through the kitchen, by which stove is not in use…” Scotty grins. “Besides… I have a different reason…. I … uh… got the message this morning…. I’ve been promoted to head-chef…”
Kevin jumps up and walks over to him.
“… on probation, of course, I still have a lot to prove… but, Kevin, head-chef.” Kevin hugs him and congratulates him.
“That is so amazing.”
“Do you know how long I’ve worked for this?”
“Yeah, and I’m so proud of you.” And Kevin means every word he says.
“And the best part… it comes with a pay-raise. Can you imagine: I get to do what I love, and bring home a real pay check.. Maybe I can finally talk about getting a bigger place?”
“Well, in the meantime, I’ll consider your plans for the kitchen. I really like it. It would make the kitchen organized and very modern and highly functional.”
“And expensive.” Scotty ads with a smile.
“Fortunately, thanks to Rudy and Tad, and my own career, money is not really the issue.”
“That must be such a wonderful feeling.” Scotty can say it without envy. Kevin may have inherited well, due to the wise investments that Rudy and Tad had made in the past, he also knows that Kevin studied and worked hard to earn his own money and still has a very demanding job.
“Hi. I got your name through Bill Hansen?”
“Yes, I know him.”
“He said you’re a lawyer and that you might be able to help me regarding my contracts?”
“Depends… I’d have to see them.”
“The problem is that I’d rather not have every one know that I’m seeing a lawyer…”
“If it’s something illegal…” Kevin starts.
“Not sure… I’m an actor and I’ve signed some contracts… years ago… But now I have some questions about them and I don’t think my agent is being honest with me.. But I’d like to get some… “second opinion”… discretely, naturally.”
“I see…” Kevin taps with the tip of his pencil on the table. He’s in the middle of making a lay out of the kitchen for the architect, so he can see if Scotty's plans can all be done… He really wants to finish this tonight… But, a quick job, on the side…? Why say ‘no’? “Fine. Can you meet me at my place in ... say… two hours?”
“Bring all your papers, I want to have a look at all your contracts.”
“I will.” The voice on the other side promises and then Kevin only needs to know his name, so that he knows who will come to his house. “Chad Barry.”
Kevin is not really impressed with the name Chad Barry. Soap-actor. And not even a good one. But now that Chad sits opposite of him, it’s a different thing. Chad is extremely good looking and just oozes a certain sexuality that doesn’t go unnoticed with Kevin.
And it sure doesn’t help that Kevin knows that Chad is bi-sexual and that he has been spotted with the hottest ladies and … men…, leaving a trail of broken hearts with both sexes, because he’s just not interested in anything more permanent than 3 months… max!
Kevin is glad that he put on his suit, it helps him to stay professional as he reads through the documents before him. Somehow the suit is always his ‘suit of armor’. He hides himself in it and lets nothing penetrate through it. By the time he's at the end of the stack of papers, he writes down a name and number.
“Call him…. He’s the best lawyer in our firm for these sort of contracts… He’ll be worth every cent you pay for him…”
“So you think I cannot trust my manager?” Chad asks.
“You’re being ripped off.” Kevin replies.
Chad watches how Kevin puts the papers back in the folder that Chad brought. There’s a certain elegance to this lawyer that Chad finds most appealing and he can’t help but wonder if this man, who can’t be much older than him, is gay or not, so he decides to open the attack.
“Oh, my God. You’re gay.” He brings his lines with such certainty, that it temporarily takes down Kevin’s wall of defense. He gives Chad an astounded look, is obviously inclined to ask what makes Chad think this, then decides not to, but instead he stammers:
“That’s not the question… This lawyer will shred your manager to pieces. That's what you need to know.”
Chad wishes he was this good at facial expressions. He’d be a lot better actor.
“I will call that lawyer, if you admit you’re gay.” Chad says, not quite understanding why this would interest Kevin and indeed Kevin laughs sarcastically, wondering what that has to do with anything, but ... he’ll play along.
“Uh, yeah, I am … gay.. whatever.” He answers
“So, you’re still in the closet, In this day and age?” Chad teases.
“I’m not in the closet at all. I’m out and proud.” Kevin’s annoyance is growing.
“You’re not out of the closet, you’re trying to pass.” Chad contradicts and Kevin’s frown is one of building anger.
Chad sees the picture of Tad and takes it off the shelves.
“Wow! Is that your boyfriend?”
“Husband.” Kevin corrects icily, watching with horror how Chad picks up Tad’s wedding-ring, that is next to Tad’s picture.
“Ex?” Chad teases, holding up the ring.
“Late.” Kevin replies, taking the picture and ring out of Chad’s hand with more force than he planned, but the result is amazing, to say the least. The teasing smile vanishes and the mocking is gone when Chad speaks again.
“I’m sorry. That must have been hard.” His voice is suddenly gentle and warm, but Kevin stays on his guard, not sure what to think of this sudden change. “How long ago? .. Since he passed away.”
“Two years.” Kevin answers.
Chad looks Kevin straight in the eyes and Kevin sees no sign of laughter there.
“I apologize for being rude. Losing someone is no laughing matter. I was wrong in what I did…. I guess, I didn’t really know…” He waves at the documents on the table… “He’s really ripping me off? I’m not imagining things?”
Now that Chad is suddenly professional, so is Kevin once again.
“Yes, I’m sure, he is.” Kevin answers with just enough compassion.
“Can you walk me through it? So that I don’t look like a complete idiot when I meet your colleague? … Please?” Kevin melts at Chad’s request. Damn those beautiful blue eyes!
He points at the table in the middle of the room, where they can sit together.
“We’ll go through them.” He then says.
“Thank you.” Chad says with a grateful smile. A smile more sincere than he has shown so far. He really likes this lawyer.
Scotty moans from underneath the blanket and grabs his phone. Who on Earth would call him at nearly 2 o’clock in the morning?
“Hi, Jason.” He then says.
“Hey. Will you let me in?”
“Jason, it’s been a long day…”
“I know, Mr Buchanan’s mother died three hours ago. I’ve done what I’m supposed to have done. I’ve stayed with the family. Helped them, but it’s out of my hands now…. And I just want to spoon up against you.”
“I don’t know, Jase. I’m tired and, to be honest, ‘this or that woman just died, let’s have sex’, … it’s not exactly a turn-on for me.” Scotty can’t help but be sharper than he planned.
“Jeez, Scotty, of course not… I’m sorry if it came across as such…”
Scotty sighs, because now Jason makes him feel guilty.
“… I just want to be with you.” Scotty hears Jason say and he sighs again and when it takes too long to get a reply, he hears Jason again. “Scotty?”
“I’ll be down in a few seconds.” Scotty replies and he rolls out of bed.
