About: Scotty and Jordan
Disclaimer: I don't own B&S, If I did there'd be no way in hell that Kevin would work for Robert.
Summary: A trip down memory-lane viewed by (telephone)-converations between Scotty and Jordan.
“I don’t know, Jordan, it just feels like a huge fraud to me and … I feel I should do something about it.” Scotty sighs.
“Scotty, don’t get involved. It’s going to cost you your job and nobody likes to hire a snitch. You’re going to get hurt.” Jordan warns.
“So, you went for it anyway?” Jordan asks.
“And? Why the broad smile?”
“I met this cute lawyer….”
“Now there’s a contradiction, if ever I heard one.”
“No, no, Mr Walker is cute. Very cute. Beautiful blue eyes. Sarcastic…”
“… Straight. Blond bimbo on his arm. Fancy car.” Is Jordan’s conclusion. Scotty grins.
“… Gay. Ex. No idea.”
“Yes. Out of the closest, but not fanatically so.”
“Unlike us... Just be careful, don’t get your heart broken. You know the rule: if something is too good to be true…”
“...It usually is, I know.” Scotty sighs.
“So, should I go?” Scotty wonders.
“Yes. Definitely yes. You can see the lawyer act in his own habitat and maybe you’ll get back to normal again.”
“Should I bring something?”
“Well, those cupcakes you made last weekend are to die for, so if you really want to impress him and your future family-in-law…”
“In-laws? As good as it sounds, let’s see if I can get the lawyer to like me first, before I start to look for matching towels.” Scotty laughs.
“Really?!?!?!” Jordan can hardly hold his laughter. “Did she really do that?”
“Nora was awesome, though I did feel sorry for this Holly. I would have hated to be put on display like that.”
“So how’s lawyer-man in real life.?”
“Kevin. His name is Kevin. Try to remember that. …. Kevin was cute, arrogant, funny, very sweet, uncomfortable and ended up shocked and apologized to me at least 5 times.”
“Did he kiss it all away?” Jordan wants to know and he’s surprised to suddenly see a sad look on Scotty’s face.
“No. Not even a quick one on the cheek.” He rolls his eyes to show his irritation.
“Well, better luck next time.”
“Scotty, sincerely, I wouldn’t wait for that clown any longer. Why don’t you call this guy you met? Randy?”
“Yeah, maybe I should. It doesn’t look like Kevin will call me anyway.”
Jordan’s laughter roars and Scotty feels slightly insulted.
“That was not funny.”
“Just trying to imagine the four of you ending up at the same movie….”
“I just wanted to gloat, but … he seemed genuinely hurt and upset that I was with someone else.”
“Should have called you…” Jordan shrugs, taking a bite from his sandwich… “So? Will you see him again?”
“I don’t think so. Maybe he’s not so interested after all.” Scotty sighs, stirring his coffee.
“Jordan. We have a date!!! Tomorrow-night!!!”
“We do?! But I have to work tomorrow-night.”
“No, not you-and-I-us, but Kevin-and-I-us. I can’t believe it. I totally teased him into it. He was at my mercy and I just went for it.”
“You sound very excited…”
“I am. He was so cute. So arrogant. So …. I just wanted to throw him on the desk and ….”
“Spare me the details!” Jordan laughs. “Give me all the dirty gossip afterwards…”
“I completely screwed it up.” Scotty sounds so sad on the phone, that Jordan makes an effort to wake up and offer some support.
“No, you didn’t. You were honest…”
“Too honest. Too pushy. Too gay… But, damn it, he was so beautiful, so sweet. He was flirting with me and I got all fuzzy inside… I just want him so badly. I don’t think I have ever wanted a man this much…”
“Don’t worry, Scotty, you’ll think of something.”
“Hey, Scotty, you’re not picking up, so I’m just leaving a little message on your machine. Hope you’re alright. You sounded pretty down last night… You do know that you shouldn’t drink alone, right? Call me if you need someone to commiserate with you?” Jordan hesitates, maybe he should say some more, but then he decides against it.
“Scotty?! Where have you been? I’ve been trying to reach you all day.”
“Sorry, Jordan, I just listened to all your messages and just had to call you back… but I’ve spend most of the day in Kevin’s bed…”
“How’s that again?”
“I went over to him to apologize.. and, Jordan, he kissed me! He kissed me! And he yanked me into his apartment and…”
“Gee, Scotty, the guy could have been some psychopath!”
“Aww, can I really go wrong with ‘an animal in bed’?” Scotty asks mischievously.
“Lucky bastard, I hate you.” Jordan says with affection.
“Please, tell my I’m right?” Scotty asks, not really expecting Jordan to disagree with him.
“Let me get this straight. You’re involved with a guy who’s a highly paid lawyer, who wants to take you out to a fancy dance, to show you off to his family and to people he knows. He offers you to pay your wages for that night, just so you can sit at some table and have some posh drinks, instead of working your ass off for a bunch of ungrateful brats, who don’t even notice that you exist, unless it’s to bark you around. And somehow he sucks? Am I missing something?”
“It’s the principle of it all.”
“Scotty, principles is what you have in high-school, and who’s offices you want to stay away from… This is real life, you make your own rules..”
“Then I have my own rules…”
“Then it’s your problem, ‘cause I don’t see it.”
“Jordan, just a quick message to let you know I’m cancelling lunch tomorrow, Kevin and I are back together… He’s sooooo cute… and…. We danced!!…. Tell you all the dirty details later.”
“A ranch? Wow!”
“I know! I’m so excited. A place for ourselves, a whole weekend just the two of us. Kevin told me there’s a tree-house and he promised me a roll in the hay… This is going to be the best weekend EVER!...”
“Just a quick message, Jordan. Don’t call me now. Don’t ask me about my weekend. Don’t ask me about that jerk. Don’t EVER mention his name again. If I never see him again, it will too soon. I’m done. I’m completely done.”
“You could have asked for another lawyer…”
“Yeah, but I’m not afraid of Kevin Walker. I’m going hold my head up high and walk into that office and just claim my check and get out.”
“Scotty, you’re still in love with him.” Jordan sympathizes.
“I know. I know. And he calls me and every time I hear his voice I just want to pick up the phone and talk to him… It’s just… this is not working.”
“Scotty? This is my fourth message. Where are you? Why don’t you call me back? I hope that it has to do with something positive regarding your relationship with a particular lawyer and that the real reason for your not calling is cause the two of you are screwing each other like crazy…” There’s a little silence. “…. Call me. I’m worried.”
“You look like sh..”
“Don’t say it. If you value our friendship, don’t say it. I know I look awful. I just have to go through this.”
“How are you coping?”
“One day at the time. Work a lot, picking up a study…. I have decided to go to cooking-school. It won’t be easy but, it takes my mind of him. And other than that, just keep breathing. ”
“Are you insane?”
“I know. It’s weird, but Michelle talked and talked and he sounded so perfect and then she said his name was Kevin and that he was a lawyer….”
“Scotty, how many gay lawyers called Kevin, having blue eyes and dark hair, do you think there are?”
“Yes, the thought of there being more than one is frightening.” Scotty admits. “Still, I’m going… It will a chance to also meet Chad Barry.”
“You know there’s a rumor….”
“Just a rumor, Michelle assures me.”
“Too bad. Good luck then.”
“Oh, my God!! Are you sure?”
“Yes, Kevin is doing it with Chad Barry.”
“Oh, my God!!”
“You already said that…”
“Does Michelle know?”
“Well, if she didn’t, then she knows now.”
“Don’t tell me…”
“I was so angry and hurt, when I called her this morning… I really felt like she set me up to break up Kevin and Chad. I wanted to hurt her too and … I may have… let some information slip by.”
“I know, that was a lousy thing to do… I believe she wasn’t even aware… she didn’t think that Chad…. She’s very upset.”
“I’m permanently done with Kevin Walker…. Oh, Jordan, I really believed he wanted me too….” Scotty suddenly breaks and Jordan holds him tight.
“Scotty, I’m sorry, I can barely make ends meet as it is. I’d love to help you…”
“Don’t bother, sweetie.”
“But to get rid of that DUI you’ll need a lawyer…”
“I know one.”
“I can only hope he’ll be kind enough to help me.”
“How did it go?” is the first thing Jordan asks, when Scotty enters his apartment.
“Better than expected. Kevin was surprised to see me. Pleasantly surprised, thank God. We talked a bit. And he’ll see what he can do…”
“Sounds positive. So? Any residual feelings?”
“I thought it would be easier… but I think I still like him… Very much.”
“Forget it, Scotty, he won’t be yours.”
“So, did ‘your lawyer’ do his job right?”
“He was awesome!! Really great! You should have seen how he dealt with that homophobic cop! Just awesome!”
“Could you perhaps be more enthusiastic?” Jordan grins and Scotty, out of breath continues.
“Kevin has a boyfriend.”
“As in the Malaysia on the other side of this planet?”
“Yes… the guy’s a priest and he’s building a school there.”
“So, he’s really available?” Jordan asks, unable to understand why Scotty start to laugh.
“No, … And Kevin wants us to be friends… He doesn’t want me to leave his life again…”
“Don’t read anything into it.”
“I won’t. He seems to be in love with that guy, and I won’t stand between them. But I can offer friendship.”
“Yeah…. Sure…” Jordan replies slowly, not entirely convinced.
“Scotty! It’s good to hear your voice. Where have you been? I tried to call you several times, but your phone was disconnected?”
“I’m so sorry I couldn’t help you..”
“That’s alright. I needed to figure this out on my own.”
“Have you found a new place to stay?”
“Yes… I… I’m with Kevin. I’m staying at his place. I can stay as long as I need. Or until the boyfriend comes back.”
“Kevin….? Scotty, please, tell me that you’re not sleeping with him to just…”
“Jordan!!! I’m going to pretend that I didn’t hear that question! Kevin offered me a place to stay and he did it out of kindness and he gave an air-mattress to sleep on and clean sheets and blankets. He has been the perfect gentleman!” Jordan makes some little noise that expresses his disbelief probably better than words could have.
“I know, it’s not my problem, but Kevin is so lonely and miserable. I don’t understand why Jason doesn’t call him. …. Kevin calls him and calls him and his calls never get returned. It’s so sad. Kevin isn’t perfect, but he doesn’t deserve this either.”
“So, what are you going to do?”
“Try to cheer him up…. Hire “Glitter”. Or something else..”
“Don’t get involved.”
“He’s my friend. I’d do the same if it were you.”
“No. We are friends. Mario and Quinn are friends. Kevin…? He has a league of his own.”
“Are you sure you should accept Kevin’s invitation to the wedding?”
“I’ve spoken to Kitty and according to her it’s alright. Robert doesn’t mind. I’m just a friend.”
“Yeah… right. Sure.”
“Scotty Wandell, you are a total idiot! How could you do something this stupid? Damn it, he has a boyfriend! You’re nothing but an unimportant in-between snack! He isn’t serious about you. Never was. How could you do this!”
“Jordan, I feel bad enough as it is….”
“It’s just that…”
“I don’t really want to listen anymore, I don’t think you can add anything to the list of names I already called myself…” Scotty says sadly and he hangs up.
Jordan watches the screen. He hadn’t expected to hear from Scotty this quickly. He would have expected Scotty to be really angry for a few days …
“I don’t know what to do.” It sounds weakly. “Things have escalated…”
“Oh, my God. What did he do to you? Has he hurt you? If he did, I’ll…”
“He broke up with Jason and he wants me back.”
“Uhh, what?!” Jordan needs to re-adjust too fast. “Kevin wants you?”
“Yes… He said he’d understand if I refuse, but…. how can I refuse?”
Jordan needs to take a deep breath before asking further questions.
“Why would you… refuse?”
“He’s still in love with Jason.”
“He broke up with him, right?”
“Yes, but I think that’s just because he’s hurt and he has me at home and …”
“You think he’s using you?”
“No, not using, I think he really believes what he says.”
Jordan counts to ten…
“Then what’s the problem?”
“If he would actually see Jason again, he’d dump me.”
“Or not.” Scotty admits, it is another possibility.
“Can’t you just .. try? You’ve loved him for so long… Just get him while you can and make him forget all about the other man…”
“I’m not sure I can do that.”
“You can… And you will.” Jordan says with confidence.
“Jason is back.” is the first thing Scotty says and Jordan tries to remember why it should matter to Scotty.
“Kevin’s ex? The one in Malaysia?”
“He’s back? Wow! Now what?”
“Kevin will meet him in one hour at our apartment…. I don’t know what to do.”
“You’re letting you boyfriend meet his ex in his apartment, two steps away from the bedroom? Have you lost it? You have to get back to the apartment and get rid of that priest.”
“I need to trust Kevin.”
“He’s a man… need I say more? Go after him. Claim him, make sure this guy understands that Kevin is yours and yours alone….”
“Go, Scotty! Don’t waste time!”
“Scotty, this must be the 17th message I leave. How did it go? Tell me? I need to know…”
“Hey, Scotty, missed your reply. Glad you and Kevin worked through it. I know you care about him… But… ahm… are you sure you want us to meet at Cinnamon’s?... I’m not sure if I really want to meet the elusive Kevin Walker.”
“Just a quick message to let you know, that I take back anything nasty I said about your boyfriend, Scotty. He was sweet and loving, … and very drunk…. I loved that he sang for you, but please ask him to never do it again…!”
Scotty plays with his cup. It’s empty, so there’s no risk of anything spilling.
“You turned him down?”
“Yes, and I regret that. So, just…”
“He talked about insurances, Jordan, that is why he wanted this. Not because he wanted to be with me…”
“Getting to know Kevin a bit… Isn’t an insurance-policy exactly how he would propose to you…?”
“I wanted something more romantic…more loving… more … I don’t know… more of something.”
“I hate to point out the obvious, but if you want romance with a capital R, white doves and rose-petals, than Kevin is not your guy…”
“I know…. I should have known….” Scotty sighs.
“Keep it short. I have to go to work.”
“Are you free Saturday night? Can you take the night off, if you’re not?”
“Kevin and I are getting married!!!”
“… Still here. Someone is about to get me a defibrillator. I’m on my back, on the floor, staring at the ceiling, trying to remember what natural disaster just hit me…”
“Oh, good. Keep breathing then and memorize: eight o’clock, it will be an the house of Nora, Kevin’s mother, I will text you the address later…. I’m expecting you to be there! You’re my best friend! Love you! Now get off the floor and go to work. Bye!”
“Scotty, I know that you and your husband are probably somewhere spending your honeymoon, but … Last night was absolutely the most beautiful ceremony I’ve ever witnessed. Kevin loves you so much. And I know you love him. I hope that your checkered past can stay in the past and that the future will hold nothing but good things for you two…. Thank you for inviting me. I would not have wanted to miss this for the world. You two together made me believe once again, that there might be someone for me out there too…. I love you both.”
