JULY 2008 – KEVIN AND SCOTTY’S WEDDINGDAY.
Nora rubs the chill from her arms. It is all too beautiful to be real. Chad’s garden is an ocean of flowers, the sweet scent intoxicating. Her trembling hand keeps pressing her handkerchief against her eyes, the tears just don´t stop flowing. Both Kevin and Scotty look so incredibly handsome and incredibly in love as they walk up to the front together, where Jason waits for them.
Kevin just cannot keep his eyes of Scotty, not even when Jason starts to read the standard lines of "Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here, to join together Kevin Walker and Scotty Wandell, …” Kevin hardly hears Jason, too lost in the moment that he is finally marrying the man he loves, right here in front of everybody.
And he is very glad when everyone stays quiet after the words: “If any man can show just cause, why they may not be joined together, let him now speak, or else forever hold his peace." Because the last thing he needs is more drama, than he already had today...
Nora is practically in tears when she says she’s the one to give Kevin away. Then Kevin and Scotty both say “I do” to the standard “in sickness and in health”, “for better or for worse” and above all the “forsaking all others”-parts of their vows.
After that more traditional part Jason announces that Kevin and Scotty will continue their vows in their own words… And everyone holds their breath as Paige steps forward with the rings. Kevin quickly and quietly asks Scotty to go first and, a little surprised, Scotty takes Kevin’s ring between his fingers.
He lets it hover around the tip of Kevin’s finger and, slightly choked up, he says:
“Kevin, when I met you a year ago, I was in a very bad place. A place, I don’t even want to think about anymore. But you’ve picked me up, gave me back my self-confidence, pushed me into going back to school. You told me I was worth it.
You make me feel complete and I know there’s no place I’d rather be than with you. There’s not one problem we cannot overcome as long as we’re together and continue to love each other and trust in each other. I promise to be faithful to you and to love you with you all my heart.
This ring has no beginning and no end and I think it symbolizes my love for you. I don’t know when I started to love you, I think I loved you before I even met you. I also believe that our love, like this ring, will never end.” Kevin feels the ring firmly slip into its place on his finger, right where it belongs, where it should never leave from again.
Paige steps forward again and Kevin picks up Scotty’s ring and he looks at Scotty and stays quiet. And just when Scotty starts to worry that Kevin may not have vows, or may even have changed his mind, Kevin slowly starts to speak, as if he hasn't rehearsed the words he is aobut to stay.
“Scotty, you speak of love and of trust and I think too often we forget the meaning of these words. I had planned some beautiful vows. I still have them here, if ever you want to read them….” He holds up a piece of paper, that he puts away almost immediately.
“But today something happened that made me realize how inadequate those words actually were.” Kevin bows his head and taking out his father’s letter his voice becomes very clear and strong. “As you remember my father died three months ago and he died right after we had this huge fight.
A fight about me, about you, about being gay, about our relationship, which he didn't approve of… It is only yesterday that my mother found a letter my father wrote to me the evening he died and it is only about an hour ago I read it myself.” Kevin doesn’t look at anyone else, only at Scotty, who’s concern is clearly written on his face.
Nora holds her breath. Oh God, please, she prays, don’t let William spoil this day. Sarah and Tommy exchange worried glances. Only Justin sees the satisfied nod Kitty gives Kevin.
“My love, it is no secret to most of the people here, that we had a tough year. The path of love didn’t always exactly run smoothly.
And my father was a huge obstacle. For both you and me… When we got our domestic partnership early this year, we decided not to tell anyone, out of fear of what he would do to destroy us, convinced as I was, and also my family was, that that was exactly what he would do.
I now want to read to you the last part of his letter to me. A letter in which he apologizes for what he did to you… and to me… and … “ Kevin’s voice wavers a bit as emotions overtake him. Scotty remains quiet, sensing that this is very important to Kevin. He notices that Kevin tries to compose himself.
So, all he does, is take Kevin’s hands into his, as Kevin’s fingers curl strongly around Scotty’s wedding-ring. Kevin gives him a little nod to let him know he’s alright again. Still holding Scotty’s ring he takes his father’s letter and opens it. “He… uhm… He finishes his letter with the following words:
But I have this to say about Scotty, I said I wanted someone for you who would make your stronger and someone who would fight for you and that is what Scotty did on both accounts. He gave you the strength to stand up for who you are, for what you believe in and especially for the love you feel for him.
And he had the courage to take your love and hold on to it, although I tried to take it away from both him and you. I hope that someday Scotty will be able to forgive this fool for not giving him a fair chance, for not getting to know him before judging him. And that he will still give me a second chance to correct my mistake.
Your mother told me that he was a fine young man, with the discipline to learn and to work, with pride to earn on his own living and not be depending on you, or worse, simply let you do all the work. I continued looking for someone, that you, in all your own wisdom, had already found, fallen in love with and taken as yours.
Nora said she hoped that once same-sex marriage becomes legal you will marry Scotty again. And this time for everyone to see and for all of us to be there, so you can celebrate your love, as you should have, in the first place. I want you to know, that if you will do this, I will support both you and Scotty in your decision.
I hope it will be a beautiful day and that I will be invited and that I will be allowed to see you do, what I hoped you would do... Be happy….” Kevin swallow the lump in his throat away as he skips the William’s words of how proud he is of Kevin to have overcome so many obstacles in his life.
He also skips the “I love you, son” at the bottom of the page. Scotty can always read that if he needs to. With trembling hands he folds the letter and holds up the ring and takes Scotty’s hand. He looks into Scotty’s eyes, searching for a disapproval of what he had just done, but Scotty only nods.
Kevin gives him a watery smile and his voice trembles a bit as he says:
“Scotty, I love you with all my heart and if he, if my father, who was so opposed to my being a gay for so long, … If he could see that, than I cannot think of anything or anyone who could ever cast any doubt on me again…
So, I’m proud to put this ring on your finger, because of all the thousand-and-one reasons, I can think of, to do that, there is one that encompasses them all... I love you.” And with those words he lets the ring slip on Scotty’s finger.
“I don’t need any other reason.” Scotty whispers, so only Kevin can hear him.
Jason bites his lip, touched by the words of Kevin and Scotty and it is more out of habit that the words "Those whom God hath joined together let no man put asunder." rolls from his lips. But neither Kevin nor Scotty seems to take offence to the religious undertone of his words.
“You may kiss.” Jason points out, hiding how overwhelmed he is by all this, and ten, twenty cameras start clicking away as Scotty takes Kevin in his arms and kisses him. Kevin’s arms slip around Scotty’s waist. He forgets everything and everyone around him, when his husband’s lips are on his.
He is vaguely aware of Jason announcing: “Ladies and gentlemen, I present you our new couple, Kevin and Scotty Walker-Wandell.” Both he and Scotty get hugged and kissed. Congratulations come from all directions. It is almost impossible for him to grasp how loved both he and Scotty feel and how lucky they are to have everyone here.
Kevin looks at the people celebrating. This day has been such a great success. Bigger than he had expected. At one of tables he sees Nora with Wally. She feeds him a bit of the wedding-cake and laughs when a dab of whipped cream ends up on Wally’s nose. She bends forwards and kisses it away.
Kevin has no idea where the relationship between Nora and Wally will go, but he knows that Nora deserves to find someone, kind and gentle, who will be committed to her and her alone. And Wally needs someone who will respect him for loving his son and who will not abuse the fact, that he is sometimes a bit too kind and gentle for his own good.
He can see his uncle Saul in a vivid conversation with Holly. He suspects that Saul is pitching a few of his new plans to make Ojai Foods and Harper’s Landing even bigger. And because he loves Saul very much, he is amused to see his uncle, more alive and resilient than ever before.
And this with a woman who, unknowingly, became his father’s mistress. Kevin is still amazed at how well Nora and Holly both handled the situation and how, instead of being crushed by what happened, both had found the strength and common sense to work together and come out of this debacle stronger and as friends … and a whole lot richer!
Speaking of friends. He’s glad to see that Emily is enjoying herself as well. He appreciates how she put in so much energy to be a friend to both Nora and Holly, to be of support for his family by being Nora’s pillar and safe-haven, when Nora needed one so desperately.
His eyes search for his sister Sarah and he finds her on the dance-floor, dancing closely pressed up against Joe. He can see her laugh shyly, so he assumes that Joe just made her a compliment on how terrific she looks and she does. Kevin is so happy to see that Sarah’s marriage made it through the rain and came out of it with a perfect shine.
Close to Sarah and Joe, he sees Kitty dancing with Robert McCallister and he grins. Those two really belong together, busily discussing politics while dancing, no doubt. Although he will never support Robert’s career, he sees why his sister loves him and how he is everything she was looking for. All he can hope for now, is that she will be happy.
And there’s Tommy, sitting beside his beautiful wife. Julia lovingly caresses her belly. She’s not really showing yet, but he can see that she’s happy with the child growing inside her. A child, he knows, will be a Walker, whichever Walker it was that made it and he’s convinced that Tommy will be the best father ever.
Justin sits beside Jordan and they both look a bit shy. Justin told Nora the truth and Nora, after the initial surprise, couldn’t be happier with Justin’s choice. Kevin has no idea if Justin and Jordan’s relationship will work, but he’s happy to see them both willing to give this a try, in the knowledge that they are unhappy without each other.
Kevin laughs lovingly as he looks at those sitting at the table with Justin. Tyler is here as well. She decided to forgive Justin and Jordan, because she loves them both too much to remain angry at them. And since Nora introduced her to Max Carter, two hours ago, the two of them have been inseperable.
And there are Chad, Jason, Mario and Quinn. Some, like Jason, Mario and Quinn, have only brushed his life and left a superficial mark. Others, like Chad and Jordan, have enriched it more than he will ever be able to recognize.
He’s glad to see his own happiness reflected on the faces of Ryan and Elizabeth Lafferty as well. The death of Connie lifted the dark veil that had covered them and they both look alive and vibrant and filled with the youth, that had almost been lost. Seems that Ryan really likes Rebecca. And Kevin grins at the possibility of a different sort of merger between a Walker and a Harper in the near future.
This brings him to William Walker. He pulls his father’s letter from his coat-pocket and re-reads his father’s last words. It is good to know that, in the end, he had his father’s blessing. Not that it would have a made a difference in his decision, but to know that from up there somewhere his father is smiling on him and approving of his choice makes this day even more special.
“You look like the cat that just ate the canary.” He hears a voice beside him say. Kevin smiles and looks up at his husband.
“Just enjoying this day, my family and my friends.” He replies. Scotty sits down beside him.
“And you have every right to that.” Scotty nods. “To think that, a year ago, I was practically homeless, penniless and hopeless. No longer in touch with my family… I seriously considered putting an end to my miserable life, feeling stupid, ashamed and abused. …. Now…
I have a home to go to, enough money in the bank and a job I love doing. My father is a significant part of my life again and getting seriously close with my amazing mother-in-law. I have an extended family of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. I have friends. And, most important, I just got officially married to the man I love with all my heart.
I don’t think my life get any better than this. I just want to hold on to this feeling, this happiness. I know it will not last forever. We will have troubles, like any married couple, but after what we’ve been through the last year, I feel that we can handle anything life throws at us and that we will come out stronger than before.”
He takes Kevin’s hand and kisses the fingertips almost reverently and Kevin kisses his lips in return. Yes, Scotty is right. It’s been a weird year indeed. A year ago, he sat in his office, overworked, miserable and alone, watching his family grow apart, mostly because of his father’s authoritarian behavior.
Now his father is dead, he has a wonderful father-in-law, his family is closer than ever, it got expanded with a half-brother he really likes and, most important of all, he’s kissing his husband, this wonderful person, he too, loves with all his heart and never wants to be separated from again. Life just cannot get any better than this.
