“Kevin, I need to talk to you.” Nora says as she sneaks into Kevin’s room.
“Please, tell me Scotty is here.” Kevin says slightly in panic.
“What? Yes. Yes. He’s here. Don’t worry, honey. He’s just as eager to get married as you are.”

“Have you seen him? Actually seen him?” Kevin really wants to know.
“Yes. And spoke to him. He’s ready. He’s sober. He looks absolutely gorgeous. He’s in love.”
“Good. I love him too. I had this nightmare of him waking up in Mexico after drinking too many tequilas and he got married to this guy named Jorge.”

“Well, you shouldn’t have gotten drunk yourself.” Nora replies .
“I wasn’t! I was awfully sober. I was afraid my nightmare would happen to me. No, Justin and I spend quite some time watching a drinking competition going on between Robert, Jason, Tommy and Chad.”

“I’m going to hate myself for asking… Who won?”
“Duh. Tommy of course. But it was a fierce race in the end between him and Jason.”
“You're such children sometimes.”
“Heard from Justin that Scotty, Jordan, Quinn and Mario ended up smoking something they shouldn’t have been smoking….” Kevin teases.

“Keep going on like this and I will protest to this marriage, based on the fact that you're both too immature.” Nora threatens with a smile.
“No, you won’t, because you love Scotty too much and … His father doesn’t leave you cold either.” Nora hits him with a pillow and Kevin winces, but laughs.

“Speaking of fathers….” She now says, without smiling. “I have something for you.” She hands him William’s letter and Kevin immediately recognizes his father’s hand-writing.
“What is this?” He wants to know, not sure of how to react.
“We moved your father’s desk yesterday and this is what we found underneath. Your letter … and mine.”

“Did you read yours?”
“And…?” Kevin asks. Nora looks at him, knowing he doesn’t ask out of curiosity, but out of the same fear she has.

“It was an apology. But I didn’t believe him.”
“Do you think this will be an apology as well?”
“I don’t know… It could be a letter filled with reproaches. The same ones as usual..” Nora replies, her hand is nervously playing with her watch. Kevin gets it.

“I had serious doubts whether I should let you read it. But, I don’t know, maybe you should. Deal with your dad one more time before you enter your marriage with the man you love.” Kevin just looks at the letter, unable to open it and Nora leaves the room, to let Kevin make his own decision.

“Who are all these people?” Kitty asks Chad and Chad grins.
“Friends and colleagues of Kevin and Scotty. Family-members….”
“I recognize those…” Kitty frows. “…. Most of them.. Not all of them.”
“By choice? Or just old age?” Chad now jokes and Kitty punches him lightly in the side.

“Watch it, kid or you’re in trouble.” Kitty threatens, about as menacing as a fluffy teddy-bear and Chad lets his hands shake to show how ‘scared’ he is. “I have to admit, this is all so pretty. The flowers, so much bright white. It all looks heavenly. I think I will let you arrange my wedding as well.”

“Any plans in that direction?” Chad asks surprised.
“Yeah, but Robert doesn’t know it yet, so keep it quiet for a while.” Kitty grins.
“I’ll tell Jase, maybe he can drop a subtle hint….”
“Now, there’s a plan…. Oh, hi, Tommy, Julia, Justin, Jordan….” And Kitty kisses the new-comers.

After the obligatory compliments on how great everyone looks, how beautiful the garden is and wonderful it is to see Kevin get married today, Julia can no longer be quiet.
“I have news…” She says nearly bursting with joy and four pair of eyes move to her belly and her smile becomes even bigger. She nods.

“Really???” Kitty claps her hands excitedly. Julia nods again and almost immediately Tommy and she get overrun by the joyous congratulations.
“Kevin will be so happy to hear this.” Jordan says.
“Speaking of Kevin, he wants to talk to me.” Kitty says, staring at Kevin’s text-message.

“Is everything alright?” Tommy asks.
“Don’t know. Will find soon enough. Sorry, got to go.” Kitty hastily says goodbye to Tommy, Julia, Justin and Jordan and she lets Chad guide her to Kevin’s room, where she lets herself in after a quick knock.

“Hey, brother, …” She hugs him and then sees her dad’s letter on the desk. “Oh.”
“Yeah, tell me about it.” Kevin sighs. “I don’t know what to do, Kit. Should I read or should I just burn it?”
“I don’t know. My relationship to dad was different from yours. I don’t know what advice to give you.”

“Kit, will you read it and then decide whether I should? You know the words that hurt me the most….” Kevin lights a candle. “If they are in it, just burn it… Never let me read it.”
Kitty takes the envelope and opens it, but waits before taking the letter.
“Why me?” She suddenly asks. “And not Sarah or Justin? Or even Tommy?”

“Because I need you to do this. The others will try and convince me to read it anyway as they are dad’s last words. I know that you will be tough enough to simply torch the thing to protect me and my wedding-day.” Kevin replies calmly and Kitty nods, takes a deep breath, opens the letter and starts to read.

Kevin tries to figure out her emotions, but there are too many of them. From a frown to a smile to an angry ‘tsk’ to … her lifting her head and looking at him with tears in her eyes.

“I think, …. You will get hurt here and there, but … I also think that this letter is also the most honest as dad could have been about you…. you should definitely read it… Especially today… And until the very end…” Kitty replies, folding the letter, placing it in front of Kevin.

“Do you want me stay?” She asks. Kevin shakes his head.
“I think, I’d rather do this alone.”
“I’ll be right outside if you need me.” She kisses his hair and leaves him alone. Kevin picks up the letter and starts to read.

Dear Kevin,

This must be the most difficult letter I’ve ever had to write. Also because I don’t really know where to begin, how to explain, what words to use. I can only hope that you will read this letter with the eyes of a son and not those of a lawyer. That you will not only look at the words, but also at the feelings with which this letter was written.

Your mother and I have had a long talk. Or rather, she talked, I couldn’t get a word in between…
Kevin smiles, despite himself. And I now understand so much more than I did before. We were never close, but these last few months I felt, that we were back in our cold war period, although I didn’t know why.

I mean, I know I paid Scotty, but I didn’t believe he would talk to you about it, so I assumed you didn’t know. First off, I want you to know that I didn’t pay Scotty to leave, so I could hurt you. I paid him for the same reason I did with some other gold-diggers. I wanted you to find a man who would choose you and not the money and status you had to offer.

And only very few of them have ever chosen you. Chad is one of them, who gave me back my cheque and gave me a fairly good idea of where I could put it… Guess, his suggestion stuck with me most, because it was the most colorful one, (must be his line of business)
… Kevin laughs, while at the same time he glows with pride for Chad’s refusal.

“I wanted someone for you who would make your stronger, like your mother did with me. Not someone who would use you and then walk away. I’m sorry that I went about it the wrong way. In Scotty’s case, I only looked at the evidence before me, the NAME that was black on white before me on paper and never really looked at Scotty as a PERSON.

I’ve always prided myself for being a good judge of character, yet, it seems I was completely wrong about Scotty. When I met him the first time, I only saw what I wanted to see in all my biased opinions. So when we were introduced and he was so nervous, insecure and shy, I couldn’t see someone nervous about meeting his possible in-laws.

I preferred to see him as a coward.. I was simply sure he wasn’t the right one for you. I wanted someone who would stand up for you and I was convinced that Scotty was NOT that person. I mistook the way he accepted the cheque as greed, because that is what I was expecting.

I should have known better when Scotty’s mask came off for a moment, when he left my office and asked if I realized how much I was going to hurt you. His question annoyed me as he simply lectured me about my relationship with my own son and questioned my ability to make the right choices, but I didn’t recognize it.

did know that you would be hurt, but chose not care. I chose to believe that I knew what you needed, better than you did. I felt I was right in my opinion about him. The fact that he would just simply tell you the truth and show you my cheque had never even occurred to me, because normally those boys would take the cheque and leave you.

I am aware that I didn’t let you make your own choices, nor had I recognized the change in you or the fact that you would be willing to fight to keep Scotty. You were no longer the one to sit back and wait, this time you wanted Scotty and you were adamant on keeping him, come hell or high water.

When Nora told me how you had spent months alone, being separated from Scotty and how you married him, alone, with no one else knowing except Chad. How Scotty struggled with his studies in New York far away from you, but always in touch with you, I started to see that I had completely mismanaged this situation.

She is angry and disappointed, because, it is my fault that all this happened. She, but also your brothers and sisters, have always supported you, and yet, you obviously felt so excluded that you decided to take one of the most important steps in your life without any of us by your side, and this all because of me.

And for that I’m sorry. This was NOT what I wanted. The fact that you felt forced to do this alone, hurt Nora, Sarah, Kitty, Tommy and Justin too. I don’t think I realized how deep the anger over this went, until I began to understand that this family would rather keep a secret this big from me, because they believe I would seriously hurt you or Scotty.

It is too crazy for words. All I ever wanted was to protect you. And, yes, I was wrong. I made a big mistake with Scotty. And I can imagine that you have reached a point where you don’t care about how I feel and I cannot blame you. But I have this to say about Scotty, …

And as Kevin reads on, tears fill his eyes and the words dance in front of him. Unable to handle his father’s words, not now, not today, he folds the letter away, puts in his pocket and finally cries the tears he was unable to cry when his father died three months ago.
