HALFWAY MAY 2008
It is late, but Wally Wandell can’t sleep. He roams through the rooms of the house, without a real aim. It was amazingly simple to go on living without Bertha. He had expected somehow, that he’d miss her, but he had to see the reality of his life. He stopped missing her 7 years ago.
He stopped longing for her, not long after Scotty left and they moved to Arizona, where she lost herself in her church to a point where they would no longer communicate with each other. He just went on working, living, breathing and she lived by his side in the house, doing the things she would do.
He should be upset, he knows. He replies with standard-sentences to those who ask how he feels and they reply with an appropriate amount of care and tell him he’s probably still in shock, which he is not. He just goes on working, living, breathing like he did before. Only she’s not longer doing her thing and he has to look after the house himself.
And he succeeds amazingly well. He is not unhappy, but not happy either. There’s just nothing. The garden was Bertha’s and he never liked it much, but he doesn’t have the energy to make it his own either. The church was Bertha’s and he’s glad he no longer has to go with her.
The problem is that the house was also Bertha’s. Even after seven years he still doesn’t like the place. He sighs. He wants to turn on the tv, but then he sees that picture. Kevin and Scotty together. And he smiles. It had been so good to see Scotty again. He had always loved his son so much.
He had been unable to understand how Bertha could treat Scotty the way she did. He had been so happy when he had heard Scotty’s voice on the answering machine. He had no idea what to expect, but the way Scotty immediately came to his side had surprised him.
He had been worried about meeting Kevin, but in all he had gotten along with him almost straightaway. He stares at the picture of Scotty and suddenly misses his son with such intensity that it takes his breath away. He gets up and goes to his bedroom, in the hope that he walked around long enough to fall asleep.
Kevin lies beside Scotty, he stares at the ceiling, wondering if he should, yes or no, discuss Justin’s mixed feelings for Jordan. In the dark he can hear Scotty sigh, so Scotty must be awake as well. He turns to his side, so he can see Scotty’s shape in the dark.
“Scotty. I think Justin might be bi-sexual.” He then says.
He can hear Scotty breathe out, like he’s been waiting for Kevin to say that.
“I think so too.” Scotty replies and Kevin understands that Scotty heard it from Jordan.
“He kissed Jordan.” Kevin continues carefully.
“They went a bit further than that.”
“Yeah, I feared so, … by what he didn’t tell me… Are you mad at me?” Kevin asks.
“At you?” Scotty replies surprised.
“Justin thought you might blame me and it might give trouble between us.”
“No. I don’t. I think that, it’s hard enough to find yourself doubting your sexual orientation. Especially if you realize that, what you want, doesn’t fall within the parameters of what ‘other’ consider ‘normal’. Justin’s feelings must be all over the place.”
“They are.” Kevin admits. He switches on the light and turns on his stomach. “And not only his. I’m trying to imagine Justin with another man and I just can’t… Isn’t it weird that, though I’m gay myself, I can’t handle the thought of my brother being with a man. Does that make me some I-don’t-know-what-phobic?” Kevin wonders and Scotty laughs.
“He’s your brother, Kevin. Would that make a difference? I mean, have you ever seriously thought of what Tommy and Julia or Sarah and Joe are doing between the sheets?” Scotty asks and Kevin makes a face, then he shakes his head. Scotty now turns to his stomach as well and lies closely against Kevin.
“You know what I think?” He teases. “I think if Justin would find out that he was bi, you would suddenly not be so special anymore….”
“Excuse me?” Kevin laughs.
“No, think about it. So far you were the only one who was ‘different’. If Justin would become ‘different’ as well, you’d lose your unique position and knowing how much you like to be the centre of attention, like … everybody else in your family…. “
“Yeah, I see what you mean. It’s actually amazing none of us went into show-business.”
Scotty starts to laugh and he kisses Kevin’s shoulder.
“Seriously though.” Scotty, looking indeed a bit more serious. “I don’t get Jordan. Here he was, whining how he hated what happened and how much he still loves Justin. The next he walks out of his room and kisses Chad!”
“Yeah, something happened behind those doors, I’m not completely getting either. Jordan isn’t exactly who I’d expect Chad to go for…. Don’t get me wrong, Jordan is very sweet and nice and charming and…. so not Chad’s choice.”
“Mhmm, don’t know. I remember the first time I got introduced to your family, I was not exactly ‘what they expected’ either.” Scotty grins at the memory. “Maybe Chad tries to find what you found in me.” Kevin gives him a push and Scotty rolls on his back, taking Kevin on top of him.
“A good looking man, who is smart, sweet, hot and can cook like an angel? .. Maybe.”
“A man who is incredibly turned on by you.” Scotty smiles as he reaches up to try and steel a kiss, but Kevin frowns.
“I somehow doubt that Chad would want his guy to be interested in me… And you might not like that either.” He teases and Scotty pulls his head down for a kiss.
“Make love to me, you idiot…. And thanks… For telling me about Justin. Jordan begged me not to tell you and I didn’t know what to do.”
“I know, Justin didn’t want me to tell you either.”
“You broke a promise to your brother?”
“Technically speaking, I didn’t promise anything. Got saved by the bell, when Chad rang it.” Kevin grins.
“You’re such a lawyer sometimes.” Scotty laughs and demands another kiss.
Jason straightens his back. There’s the boarding call for his flight, but he stays seated, still doubting whether he should go or not. He’s been doing a lot of soul-searching these last few days and feels less and less satisfied with how he handled his departure and the way he treated Chad.
Also Robert’s words about using his religion to hide behind, still nag at him. What if he is? What if he’s not as committed to God as he believes he is? What if he’s indeed just cowering behind the name of God, rather than standing up for it? Is he making the wrong decision? Should he go to Malaysia? Should he stay? He feels so clueless.
His phone buzzes. Someone is texting him… He smiles when he sees it’s Robert. Probably just wishing him a safe journey. Robert had wanted to take him to the airport, but Jason had wanted to do this on his own. He had had dinner with Robert and had said his goodbyes there.
“Have a safe journey. Call me when you get there, if you can..” A this point Jason expects Robert to stop, but then it goes on. “There is also other news. Guess I was wrong about Chad and you were right. Chad is now dating Jordan. Kitty just heard that from Kevin.”
Jason’s smile freezes on his face. He reads the words ‘Chad is now dating Jordan’ over and over again, unable to believe them. He reads them until the letters start to swim on his tears. He switches off the message, puts his phone away and takes a deep breath. Well, that was it then. He can no longer go back on his decision. He has no more reason to stay either… He takes his ticket.
His phone rings. He knows it’s his, because Kevin’s phone sounds differently. Damn, why did he put it next to his be? Probably because he was worried about Jordan. He crawls out of Kevin’s arms and grabs it. He watches the small screen. It’s his dad! Scotty is immediately awake, wondering why his dad calls him at 3 in the morning.
“Scotty. I’m so sorry to have woken you up…”
“That’s alright, dad… Are you alright?” Kevin now wakes up at the slightly alarmed sound of Scotty’s voice.
