“Mom? Dad? It’s me, …. Scotty… I hate leaving messages… I know it’s been a while since I called but …. Ahm… You may have heard that we can get married in California now and that is what Kevin and I plan to do. On the 27th of July. About a year after our first meeting…. And I …. we hope you will want to be there? … It would mean a lot to me…”

Kevin listens as Scotty hesitantly gives his parents their telephone number, just to be sure, and asks them to call him back. Kevin sighs. Not much chance on that he fears. Though Scotty has spoken to them a few times on the phone, Kevin and Scotty are aware that all efforts to keep the lines of communications open come from Scotty and not his parents.

And Kevin is not too sure if he really wants to meet Scotty’s parents. From what Scotty told him, his mother Bertha is unforgiving on the subject of Scotty being gay and his father, Wally, is not someone who will stand up against her. And Kevin seriously wonders which is worse.

He himself had suffered a lot from the heated arguments between Nora and William about his being gay, feeling responsible for the fights, because he was the topic of them, but at the same time he had felt a certain safety in the fact that his mother was so strongly on his side and he had never had a reason to doubt her love for him.

He had never doubted that his father would hate him. William had always made it clear that he considered Kevin the weakest of his sons. But Nora had always been there to support Kevin. To know her love was unconditional had helped Kevin through some of the darkest days in his life….

Scotty, on the other hand, had lived in a completely different situation, where he had always had a good relationship with both his parents. He had always felt safe and protected, loved and babied within his own family. He had not been worried about his mother’s reaction when he came out to her… And then he seized to exist to his mother.

The hole Scotty fell into had been a deep one. Those four little words ‘Mother, I am gay’ had changed his life from a little paradise to a hell of silence. The two years, he continued to live in his parents’ house, had been spent being ignored, being unwanted and feeling unloved.

The week after his soberly celebrated 18th birthday and two days after getting his driver’s license, on a Sunday morning, when his parents were in church, he threw all his belongings in his second-hand Ranchero, checked the envelope that contained the money from his savings-account, that he had raided and then he drove off.

Kevin’s chain of thought gets broken because Scotty falls beside him on the couch.
“So, where were we?” he asks.
“Your parents not home?” Kevin asks.
“No. Weird though. I somehow expected them to be home.”

“They are preparing themselves for bingo-night?” Kevin grins.
“’sgotta be it.” Scotty mumbles with a smile, chewing on his pen and checking off ‘Wally/Bertha’ from their ‘to inform’-list. And suddenly Scotty notices how weird it is that he had written down Nora, Sarah, Justin/Jordan first followed by a list of others.

Only Wally/Bertha, had been written down by Kevin, at the bottom of the list. Scotty had not even considered calling them… It makes him sad to realize that he had not put them on the list because he fears they will not come anyway. He is not willing to hear their ‘no’ on his question…

“Think they’ll call you back?” Kevin asks. Scotty sighs.
“No, probably not. It is easier to pretend your son is not gay, if you ignore the fact that he has a husband. To hear your voice, even on the phone, would make you real to them…. I suppose.”

“True…. Justin and Jordan were very happy for us, weren’t they?” Kevin grins.
“Yes… I wonder how the rest of your family will react.”
“Yes, me too… Only one way to find out… Let’s head on over to mom’s. I said we’d be there at around six.”

Kevin feels ‘ambushed’ when he and Scotty enter Nora’s kitchen, expecting to find her there alone, but instead, Saul, Tommy and Sarah are bend over some paperwork they are discussing, and Kitty is on the phone. Scotty and Kevin look at each other, quietly communicating their mistrust over this sudden get-together.

“I’m sorry, honey. Saul, Tommy, Sarah and I are going over the last details of the merger. I want you to have another look at it as well. Holly made some last minute corrections and I want to see if you approve and Kitty has a date with Robert McCallister tonight.”

“It is not a date.” Kitty replies exasperated, which signals to Kevin that Nora has been teasing Kitty for a while.
“It is good that everyone is here…. Ah, … Scotty and I… that is to say.. Eh…” Kevin stammers and then he turns to Scotty, who seems amused at Kevin’s sudden shyness.

Everyone is looking at Kevin with rather blank faces.
“Scotty and I talked yesterday and we think… We… uh… we love each other and .. uh…” Kevin just stands there, flapping is hands about, completely unable to find the right words, now that he stands in front of everybody. Scotty covers his mouth to hide his smile. Kevin looks so adorable.

“Oh, honey…..” Nora then says, putting her son out of his misery. “Justin already told us.” And she quickly runs up to Kevin and hugs him and Scotty both. “Congratulations!”
“We’re so happy for you.” Tommy says.
“Can’t wait for it to happen.” Sarah hugs them both.

“You both deserve all the happiness.” Kitty’s smile couldn’t be bigger.
“I’m glad that this time we can all celebrate your union.” Saul’s eyes express his joy, more than his words ever could.
“Thank you. All of you.” Scotty replies, overwhelmed by the love that the Walkers give him.

“Can we now sit down to have dinner and discuss all the details…?” Nora asks and they all move towards with the dinner table.
“Hey, Kitty, weren’t you supposed to go out with McCallister tonight?” Kevin asks when he sees Kitty sit down at the table.

“Cancelled him.” Kitty relied, waving with her phone. “He already heard it from Jason, who heard it from Chad…. And he told me to congratulate you both.”
“Yeah, how come Chad knew before we did?” Sarah asks.

“Because he’s my best friend and he’s been so supportive of us from the start. He was the first person I called this morning.”
“And rightfully so…. That is Kevin’s own decision.” Nora sends Sarah a warning glance.
“Set a date yet?”

“27th of July. A summer wedding.” Kevin smiles.
“I’m sure it will be a beautiful day.” Nora beams. She cannot believe that it will actually happen. “Have you already planned where you will get married?”
“That is the reason why I called Chad this morning. He has agreed that we can use his garden.

We thought about having it here, mom, but we are expecting quite a lot of people and Chad’s garden is so beautiful and big and … he’s used to dealing with larger parties there, from a time when he was younger and wilder, … and not in a relationship with a priest. He was very honored to be asked…”

“Yes, I bet he was.” Nora replies and she stares at her plate, a bit disappointed that she’s not involved. The looks of surprise on the faces of Tommy, Sarah and Kitty prove they had expected some other arrangements as well. Kevin and Scotty knowingly smile at each other

“… And he’d be very be happy, if you let him help you organize this. ..” Kevin continues and Nora lifts up her head, slowly starting to glow. “… Chad, Scotty and I know that no one will give us a warmer, lovelier wedding-party than you.”
“Oh! Kevin Walker! I hate you.” But her beaming smile speak other words, as she flings her napkin at Kevin.

“I can’t believe how easy it was to fool your mother. Did she believe that we would not let her organize this?” Scotty smiles. Kevin is still laughing as he closes the door of the loft. He pulls Scotty into an embrace and kisses him.
“Yes, it was almost too easy.” He grins.

Just as Scotty replies to his kisses, by rubbing his body against Kevin’s, the phone rings. “Let it ring.” Scotty begs, nibbling at Kevin’s ear, but Kevin already picked up the phone.
“Kevin Walker…. “ He starts cheerful, but then he gives Scotty a surprised glance. “Oh, hi, Mr Wandell…. Yes, just a minute, he’s here…”

Kevin covers the phone with his hand and softly says to Scotty. “It’s your dad. He wants to talk to you. He sounds upset.”
“Mom probably threw a fit when she found out that we’re going to get married….” He takes over the phone from Kevin.

“Hey, dad…” he says cheerful, but his smile fades within a few seconds as Wally comes with a message that shatters Scotty’s entire world. Wally Wandell starts to talk and Scotty falls silent, as he sits down. Sitting opposite of Scotty, on one of the chairs, Kevin watches as Scotty turns pale.

His eyes wide with pain. He makes a small noise and Kevin gets up quickly and rushes to Scotty’s side. Scotty nods at the telephone….
“Yes, yes, I will be there as soon as possible…. We’ll check what the fastest way is…. We’ll see…. I… I’m sure that Kevin can take care of that…. I want to bring Kevin too.”

Kevin frowns. This is not good, if Scotty wants to take him to Arizona. He listens as Scotty hastily says his goodbyes. It isn’t until Scotty puts down his phone that Kevin realizes how devastated Scotty looks.
“Scotty, what is going on, sweet-heart?” He asks softly.

Looking at Kevin Scotty softly replies:
“My mom had a heart-attack today.”
“Oh, my God! Will she be alright?” Kevin asks shocked. Scotty shakes his head.
“She’s dead.”
