MAY 15TH 2008
Nora was glad that things were back to normal. It was weird to be without William, but at the same time they had grown apart, so the transition was not as big as she had feared. Most of all she was glad her family and loved ones were doing well again. She spends more time with Saul, now that she needs to be more informed about Ojai.
And this means that the closeness that she used to have with Saul, when they were kids, is coming back. Not that they were not close before, but before, William had been a barrier and Saul would not discuss Ojai with Nora, unless she expressly asked for it, now everything is out in the open and everything gets talked about.
Tommy and Sarah have implemented some changes to modernize Ojai Foods and the morale amongst the employees is high, even with those who used to work for William from the start. It helps that Tommy is relaxed, now that his father isn’t watching over his shoulder all the time and Sarah can be creative again, without being stifled by William.
And of course it helps that Sarah and Joe are back together, burning up the telephone-lines, making Sarah joke that she never knew telephone-sex could be that great. Everyone keeps a close eye on Julia, wondering if and when she would show the first signs of being pregnant, but Julia takes it in good humor, glad with the support from the Walkers.
Kitty’s show is doing great and she is growing closer to Robert McCallister, who shows up more often, than Nora had expected. The relationship between Robert and Jason is difficult sometimes, especially when it comes to Chad, because Robert likes Chad, he’s just not that impressed with Chad’s work.
Kevin and Scotty are both extremely busy, their schedules are often conflicting with each other, but they are getting through it. She doesn’t see them together often. When they have a chance to be together, they prefer to be alone and she completely respects this.
But Scotty is no longer a stranger to her house and both he and Kevin love dropping in and have dinner with her, if they cannot be together. Jordan and Tyler are no longer strangers either. They are both cheerful persons and it feels so good to Nora to hear Justin laughing and see him act all goofy.
She has a meeting with Holly, Rebecca and Emily the day after tomorrow, to which she looks forward, even though they will also be discussing the pending merger and the idea, brought in by Emily, to branch out into herbs and spices as well. Nora is happy to have two such lovely friends.
What also makes her happy: Not a word from Connie since she left Nora’s house. Probably gave up and Nora is happy about that. She wants William to rest in peace and go on living her own life and she doesn’t need too many reminders of William’s unfaithfulness, especially not if they come in the form f a vindictive little Connie.
And now it’s time she straightens her back to overlook her lovely garden, because life may be good but at this moment, she’d kill someone for a sandwich, because she’s hungry. She is about to switch off her radio before she goes into the house when the news actually registers with her.
“Kitty! Kitty!” Nora yells.
“What?!” Kitty looks at her, worried there’s something wrong with her mother, but Nora is all smiles.
“It got through! They just said it on the news! Finally!” She says.
“It’s official?” Kitty asks surprised.
“Yes! Yes! If you don’t believe me, check CNN.” Which is just what Kitty plans to do, but it’s not necessary. The first news-station she clicks for, already has the news large on tv:
“California ban on same-sex marriage struck down!”
The news spread at light-speed. Quinn calls Mario and Mario texts Jordan, who immediately sends it through to Scotty, who reads it with tears in his eyes. This message makes Scotty walk up to his chef.
“André? Would it be alright if I take the afternoon off as we discussed?”
“I just read the news myself, Scotty. I’m sure you want to celebrate with Kevin and your friends. Go! Have fun! And Scotty...?” Scotty turns back to André. “Congratulations!”
“Thank you!” Scotty says in all happiness, as he throws his dirty apron amongst the other aprons that need to be washed.
When Jordan storms into his apartment he almost runs into Justin.
“Hey! I heard the news.” Justin says, cheerful.
“Isn’t that the best news you ever heard? I can’t believe I can now actually get married.”
“Yeah, well, you’ll have to find someone first.” Justin reminds him.
“Minor technicality.” Jordan says.
“I’m glad to hear that.” And Justin IS happy with Jordan’s words and the fact that Jordan finally gave up comparing himself to Jason and Chad and then feeling like an ugly duckling. “So, I guess it’s Cinnamon Jack’s tonight?”
“You bet!” Completely happy Jordan wraps his arms around Justin. “Are you coming along?” He asks, his eyes alight with happiness. Though his arms are still around Justin, Justin doesn’t try to break lose. It seems almost as if he enjoys having Jordan’s arms around him.
“I guess. Have to protect you from those predatory gay guys who will now be anxious to put a ring on your finger and take you away from me.” Justin replies, not entirely sure himself if he’s really joking. He lets his hands rest on Jordan’s shoulders. As if Jordan suddenly realizes the intimacy, he lets go of Justin.
He looks up at Justin, ready to apologize if Justin indicates that Jordan crossed a line, but it doesn’t come to that. His mouth gets silenced by warm lips. He freezes. This time he is not drunk and Justin definitely isn’t either. Unable to immediate recognize what is going on Jordan’s lips part a bit further.
He however hesitates for a few seconds, wanting to give Justin the chance to back away, but that moment passes and his hands rest on Justin’s hips and then slowly move to his back as his grip on Justin tightens. He pulls Justin closer, oh, so slowly and Justin’s body carefully melts against Jordan’s.
This passes the point of being a mistake. This is long, slow, deliberate and quite arousing kiss and Justin’s fingers move to the back of Jordan’s head, pressing his lips closer to Jordan’ s, clearly expressing that he doesn’t want the kiss to stop, but it has to, because they are both in need of oxygen.
Their lips part but a few inches, both breathing heavily from the arousal that they feel. Justin swallows hard, his mouth is dry.
“Justin, what are we doing?” Jordan whispers.
“I don’t know. This is all…strange.”
“Do you really want this? Please, don’t play with me.” Jordan moans as Justin’s hands caress his sides, almost as if he’s exploring Jordan’s body, becoming aware of possibilities he hadn’t thought of before. Or perhaps had not dared to be open to. Justin shakes his head, he doesn’t want to deal with the answer.
“I don’t know, Jordan. I don’t want to hurt you, but I have no idea what I want. I just don’t want this to stop. I just want you to go on kissing me. I don’t know, if I want to it go further than that or not. I just know that I like that kiss and I like the here and now and I don’t want to think of what will happen afterwards.”
Justin’s whispered answer is not helping and Jordan closes his eyes tightly. God, it feels so good to be touched, to be caressed, to be kissed. But this is wrong, because he doesn’t know what motivates Justin and so he steps back, away from Justin, knowing he’s going to be kicking himself forever for doing this.
“I’m sorry, Justin. You’ll have to figure that out first. I don’t want you to do something you will regret. I’m sure that we are friends. I’m not sure however, that you are ready to take it to another level. I don’t think we should rush into something that will ruin our friendship, just because our sex-life is non-existent at the moment.”
“You’re probably right…” Justin says, not entirely sure if he does agree, but he knows he won’t go against Jordan’s wishes. What Jordan says makes sense, even if Justin doesn’t want it to make sense. “I can’t go to Cinnamon Jack tonight. I…uh.. gotta wash my hair.” He smiles insincere and Jordan nods in understanding.
“Scotty, I don’t understand how you manage to always make lobster taste better than anything else….”
“It has to be the love I feel for you, that I pour into it.” Scotty answers sweetly.
“Mhmmm, I love your love.” Kevin replies with a gentle smile.
Scotty surprised him with this lovely candle-light dinner at their apartment and Kevin feels completely satisfied. This day was just perfect. He had closed a good deal with a new client and on the high of that moment came the news of the huge success for the gay community
It had made him so happy and then, to come home and celebrate it with Scotty and a lobster-dinner and delicious wine was just the perfect ending to a perfect day.
“You’re a terrific cook and I’m so proud of you.” Kevin kisses Scotty’s hands and shyly Scotty looks into Kevin’s eyes, entwining his fingers with Kevin’s.
“I still love this, you know.” Scotty says with a sweet smile.
“When you look at someone and they don’t look away.” They both smile at the memory.
“I have no reason to look away, I’m looking at the man I love.” Kevin replies, his voice heavy with tenderness and desire.
“So, you still love me? After all these months?” Scotty asks, teasingly.
“Yes, and every day I still discover things about you I didn’t know, so every day I love you a little more.”
“Yes?” Scotty takes Kevin’s hand between his hands.
“…Will you marry me? And this time in front of everybody? Your family? Our friends and colleagues? Out in the open? With no more secrets? Really make me your husband for everyone to see?”
Kevin looks at Scotty, stunned by the proposal, but he knows Scotty is right.
They now have the chance to actually be married, just like his parents were, just like his sister and brother are. There is finally no difference in how his relationship to Scotty is viewed compared to that of Sarah and Joe or Tommy and Julia. He nods, with tears in eyes.
“Yes, Scotty, I’ll marry you.” He replies and a kiss seals his promise to Scotty.
