When Kevin and Scotty arrive at Nora’s house the police is already there and so is their doctor. There are a lot of people walking around, but Kevin and Scotty quickly find Saul. He is in the kitchen, looking rather shaken-up. When he sees Kevin, he gets up and hugs him. He wants to offer his condolences, but Kevin shakes his head.
“I don’t want to hear them, Uncle Saul. Scotty and I went through too much because of him…. I’m too numb to feel sad.” Saul mumbles that he understands, but then seems to lighten up when a young man enters the kitchen.
“Ah, Kevin, you remember Max Carter?”
“Yes, we knew each other in high school, didn’t exactly travel the same circles, but I remember you. We weren’t friends, but not enemies either.”
“It’s nice to see you again, Kevin, though I wish it was under different circumstances. Your uncle has unsuccessfully tried to reach your mother, do you have any idea where she is?”
“With Sarah, to my knowledge.” Kevin replies. “I’ll call her.”
“Don’t bother, your mom switched off her phone, thinking William was calling her…” Saul says.
“Try Sarah’s house.” Kevin then suggests.
Sarah picks up almost immediately.
“Kevin! Hi! … No, I don’t know where mom is. I just went to look at her and her room was empty. Her car is gone. I thought she went home to talk to dad…. She didn’t? …. What?!” Sarah nearly drops her phone.
“Dad? … How long?... When did it happen?... Do the others know?... No, of course. You know what? You call Kitty and Justin and I’ll talk to Tommy. I’ll drop the kids with the neighbors and come home, alright?... Kev? I just found a note from mom. She went to see Emily. We should try and call Emily…. Yeah, I’ll call Emily, I have her number somewhere.”
Kitty’s hand reaches from underneath the covers and it looks for that irritating sound that makes the rest of Kitty’s body wake up as well.
“Yeah? … Kev?... It’s not even nine o’clock… On a Sunday morning. The day of the week to sleep in and…. What?!”
Kitty sits up straight. Her hair poking in all directions. With a loud thud the file on Robert McCallister slips off her bed and falls on the ground. “What? … That was the file on Robert McCallister… I was reading that… but .. forget that. What about dad? .. What happened?”
Julia is about to pour the coffee, when her phone rings. She sighs, figuring Tommy will have to wait a bit longer.
“Hello?... Oh, hi, Sarah… Sleep well after yesterday?” She starts cheerful, but then Sarah gives her the news, just as Tommy walks in.
“That is awful, Sarah…. How’s your mother dealing with it? … Oh, I see… I won’t keep you then… Tommy and I will go to your parents’ place then… We’ll see you there. Bye.”
“Jules? Why are going to my parents’ place? I don’t want to talk to my dad.” Julia startles when she hears Tommy’s voice.
“Oh, honey.. Saul… he just went to talk to your mother, but … he found your dad instead.. Tommy,… your father died, probably somewhere last night.”
“Jules, this is not funny…. I know you don’t like my dad, but…”
“That was Sarah, she heard the news from Kevin, who is at your mother’s house.”
“My father…. He’s dead?” Tommy needs to sit down.
“Probably a heart-attack or something. Police is investigating.”
“Why? Do they think someone killed him? I mean, it wasn’t some burglar or something?”
“No, probably just standard procedure when someone dies of unknown causes.”
“We should go to then.”
“I agree.” Julia nods. “But first some breakfast. It will be a long day and there’s nothing you can do for your father. Kevin and Sarah are calling your siblings. Every one will have to be strong. And 10 minutes to eat something won’t make a difference.”
“It’s for you, Nora. It’s Sarah.” Emily says as she returns to her kitchen. Nora nods, mumblings something about her cell-phone being turned off and she hurries to the hall. Emily sits down with Holly again. Yesterday-night had turned into a remarkable good night.
Both Holly and Nora talked at length with each other. Holly gave an even more detailed account of William’s lies and Nora told Holly about her life, her kids and her husband. They had laughed and cried and ultimately, it had become so late and Holly had drank too much to return to her house and both she and Nora stayed at Emily’s.
Emily is grateful that Nora and Holly get along, because she doesn’t want to chose between their friendships. The door swings open and Nora comes back to the breakfast table.
“Is everything alright at home?” Emily asks, surprised as she had been to suddenly hear from Sarah.
Nora is as white a sheet as she sits down.
“Ahm, I don’t know… I have to go back home… It’s William.”
“What happened to him?” Holly asks, feeling more concerned that she thinks she should.
“He… He’s dead.” Nora whispers.
“Dead?” Emily repeats and Nora nods quickly.
“Saul found him… this morning.. Kevin is there now.. The kids are regrouping at our house… I have to be there.”
“Yes, of course.” Holly says. “What can Emily and I do?”
“Pack the things I brought for the night, while I take a quick shower and get ready?” Nora asks quietly, .
“We’ll do that.” Emily’s smile is encouraging and Holly gets up as well to help Nora pack.
“Wow!” Jordan says quietly. Justin can only agree with that. Kevin’s news has left them both speechless. “So, what are you going to do?”
“I don’t know. Get dressed and go over to dad’s house I suppose… The others are coming as well.”
“Want me to come with you?”
“Yes…. Would you mind?”
“No. I wouldn’t have offered it, if I didn’t want to be there for you.” Jordan smiles, glad to offer his friendship and it only makes Justin feel more guilty about the kiss last night.
So far Jordan hasn’t said anything and Justin doesn’t plan to bring up the subject either. Maybe Tyler is right and Jordan won’t remember it. Justin crosses his fingers. He would rather not loose Jordan’s friendship. Jordan puts a hand on his shoulder.
“Hey! Your family will be fine. Don’t worry.” Jordan smiles, believing that to be the subject on Justin's mind.
Nora watches the people at her dinner-table. Scotty had made a quick dinner for all of them from what he could save from the party, what he could find in the fridge and what his own imagination conjured up. She was so incredibly grateful that Scotty had taken over the kitchen.
With the help of Julia, Justin and Jordan he had turned her lovely kitchen back from the battle-zone it was yesterday to the clean safe haven it always was. Kevin, Tommy and Sarah had gone through endless stacks of paperwork. She had spent most of the afternoon talking to the police and the doctor.
Saul had left when William’s body was driven off to the morgue and together with her children she had sat down to arrange the funeral, next Wednesday. Her children reacted about as varied as could be. Kitty made a lot of noise about some decisions, Kevin didn’t say one word.
As the family-lawyer she would have expected him to more vocal, but Kevin was remarkably quiet, as if it didn’t concern him. Tommy had been practical, Sarah emotional and Justin… Justin chipped in where he could. The stress of the long day starts to become noticeable.
She raises her glass and look at those around her. Sarah, Kitty, Tommy, Julia, Kevin, Scotty, Justin and Jordan.
“My lovely family, and, yes, that includes you, Jordan, as well… it’s going to be a tough couple of days.
William died without being able to make amends, without being able to try to rectify any of his mistakes…. And some of us may also have some unspoken words and unresolved issues with William that can now never be dealt with by him… But we’re a family, with great in-laws and superb friends. I hope we can be together Wednesday. United.”
Kevin mumbles something and all eyes are suddenly on him.
“What did you say?” Nora asks and Kevin looks up at her. Defiant and angry.
“I told him that he could drop dead, but that he shouldn’t expect me to come to his funeral and cry over him. Well, he dropped dead. And I’m not going to his funeral to cry over him.”
