Somehow Holly can still not believe it. How could she have been so gullible? How could she have believed William?
“Please, Holly, the last thing Nora wants is for to you get hurt, but she feels that you need to know the truth.” Emily says again.

“So,” Holly replies bitterly. “William’s dead wife is not as dead-ish as he claims…What else did he lie about? You listened to me, when I talked about him. What more is there?”
“The kids…. You just saw Kitty... She did not come back to be with her family. She got into a huge fight with William, because she ditched a boyfriend William approved of… She's currently living in the house of a friend of hers.”

Emily starts calmly. Outside the music stops playing and they can vaguely hear someone giving a speech. She guides Holly to the window.
“That is Justin. Yes, he was in Iraq. Did William also tell you he became an addict after he returned?” Emily asks and Holly shakes her head.

“See those two men stepping forward? The one on the right is Kevin, William’s son. The one who would soon enough meet the girl of his dreams? That young man he’s dancing with is Scotty, his husband. Kevin is gay. Came out when he was around 17. In all fairness to William, William does not know that Kevin is married to Scotty.

He thinks that Scotty left Kevin, because William paid him to do so, but Kevin had other plans… William doesn’t know that, because Kevin and William hardly talk to each other anymore…. William, however, does know Kevin is gay, so that nonsense he told you? … Lies and more lies.”

Holly slowly shakes her head, unable to understand what she had done to deserve this.
“I want to leave…” She says with a trembling voice. Emily nods, but at the same moment she sees someone else enter the garden…
“Oh, my God. William is here! He’s not supposed to be here!”

Justin is not immediately aware of something happening. He watches Kevin and Scotty dance, happy that he could do this for his brother, when suddenly there’s a kerfuffle and a few seconds later he gets pushed aside as the music is turned off with quite some violence. He winces at the abrupt silence.

Scotty lets go of Kevin, who is, at first, shocked to see his father standing there, but then automatically places himself between his father and Scotty. Tommy pushes Julia back against the bushes. Sarah whispers to her children to go to the kitchen and Mario slips of his chair to take the kids away. He doesn’t like fights. He’s sure he’ll get to hear the story later on anyway.

On the other side of the table Kitty frowns, suddenly wishing she was somewhere else. Justin looks at his mother, who stares at her husband, her face pale, but calm.
“William, don’t make a scene.” Her voice is doesn’t tremble, even though the rest of her body does. She’s scared and at the same time ready to fight. For herself and for her children.

“What is this … this travesty? A party!? This is more a freak-show! What is this nonsense of Kevin being married?!.” William spits out the words as he turns to Kevin and now recognizes Scotty. “You? I thought we agreed you’d stay out of Kevin’s life? …” He turns to Kevin. “You are aware that he’s whore, right?”

“Dad,…” Kevin tries to stay calm, feeling Scotty’s hand soothingly on his back.
“He’s for sale. I paid him to get out of your life, that cheap, little…”
“Considering the rather high amount of money he finagled out of you, in very little time, I wouldn’t call him ‘cheap’.” Kevin sarcastically interrupts, the look in his eyes is cold as ice.

“I had him checked out… He slept with other men for money. He was involved in embezzlement! I wouldn’t be surprised if he had criminal record and…”
“I don’t intend to discuss Scotty’s past mistakes. I don’t owe you any explanation, but thanks for the vote of confidence, that at age 33, I'm apparantly not smart enough make my own choices in life.”

“Choosing him would be the biggest mistake you could ever make!”
“Too bad! It’s done. And I’m happy with him, like it or not!”
“It will ruin you!” William warns.
“No, I love him and no one is going to stop me.” Kevin replies.

“In that case, you can consider your contract with Ojai terminated.”
“Ojai Foods will no longer be needing your legal advice.” William says coldly and Scotty gasps.
“You can’t DO that.” Kevin is caught between anger and disbelief.

“Watch me. If you insist to be married to him, then you’re useless to this family. It is your choice.”
“Well, that’s easy…. I’m leaving this house…. Permanently this time.” Kevin replies. Though his voice is calm, Scotty can feel Kevin tremble like a leaf.

Scotty opens his mouth to say something to defuse the argument, but doesn’t get a chance. William is stunned for a second that Kevin would chose Scotty over his father, but then, in a final attempt to scare Kevin he lashes out.
“If you turn your back on me now, then I never ever want to see you in this house again!”

“William!” Nora’s cry of shock is ignored by her husband.
“I will forbid your siblings to even talk to you, and the same goes for you, Nora. … And I will also disinherit you. You will no longer exist to this family!” If William had expected this to worry Kevin, he’s wrong.

“Go ahead, Dad. I don’t need you. I’ll even make it easy for you and make this a mutual understanding. From now on, you don’t exist to me either. You know what?! Monday I will draw up a contract that I will never set foot in this house again, provided that you sign an agreement that from now on you’ll stay the fuck out of my life and that of my husband!”

“Kevin!” Nora’s eyes fill with tears, but Kevin doesn’t look at her. He keeps his eyes locked on William, the hatred, pain and sadness of the last few years are barely veiled.
“And you believe that you could live without your family? With only that piece of trash for comfort?”

“This wonderful man is all the family I need.” Kevin’s statement is so simple, but straight from the heart. Wanting to end the argument, Kevin turns his back on William. For a second his eyes meet Scotty’s, seeing the sadness there about how this beautiful day and loving family-moment has suddenly been ruined by William.

“You’re such a joke!” William laughs condescendingly. “Trading in family for what? … If you’re really so desperate to fuck another man, can’t you simply buy yourself one for an hour or two? Any of those hookers could do the job equally good or maybe even better than this one does.”

“That does it!” Kevin turns back to William, ready to attack him, the hatred now so obvious and so open, that even William takes a step back. But before Kevin can hit William, he feels himself begin pulled back by Scotty, with a “No Kevin”. At the same time Tommy and Justin grab Kevin as well, pushing him away from William.

“Kevin, don’t!” Tommy warns, using all his strength to control his infuriated brother.
“I’m going to kill him! I’m going to fucking kill him!” Kevin yells, trying to fight off his brothers and his husband.

“No, you’re not.” Justin screams, cupping Kevin’s face with both his hands, forcing Kevin to look at him. “You’re not, bro. He isn’t worth it. Don’t do it.... Please.... Please.” He now begs, terrified of what Kevin will do. Now, Sarah and Kitty move between William and Kevin as well, more concerned about protecting Kevin than William.

Tommy at first has the hardest time controlling Kevin, but then feels Kevin relax under his fingers. Kevin looks up at William with contempt.
“Apparantly I’m not allowed to kill you… Too bad. Doesn’t change anything though. I’m done with you…” Kevin’s voice trembles a bit.

“I’m done with you forever this time, dad. If you want to draw a line in the sand, please do, and put me on one side and stand on the other. But if you do, there is absolutely no going back from that. Your entire reaction to my being gay and being married to another man is petty and childish. But if you really want to throw me out of the family, …”

“I do. I never want to see your face, or his, again.” William replies coldly. Kevin nods.
“Then fine! As far as I’m concerned you can go to hell. Drop dead for all I care, just don’t expect to come to your funeral and cry over you. I’m not going to spend one more second of my precious life thinking about you. You’re a total waste of my time.”

Kevin’s voice is rough, but clear and loud enough for everyone to hear and even William is shocked about how definitive it sounds.
“Let go of me, Tommy,... Justin.” Kevin calmly orders and Justin releases his hold on Kevin.
“Kev….” Tommy replies, not sure if it’s really smart to let go of Kevin.

“Let go, brother.” Kevin replies softly.
“Yes, let go, Tommy…. At this point Kevin could easily win from you, Tommy. At least he has the balls to stand up for his woman…” William points at Scotty. “Which is more than you’ll ever do.”

“Excuse me?” Tommy asks, way too politely, his back still turned at William.
“You heard me. Your gay brother is more of a man than you’ll ever be.” William now says coldly, unaware that behind him Emily and Holly have joined the others in the garden and that Holly is shocked by what William said to Kevin.
Tommy slowly turns around.

"There is never a good reason to cheat on your spouse." William preaches to Sarah and this time it’s Holly’s lips that turn into a sarcastic smile.
