the random word generator: inevitable
Disclaimer: Brothers & Sisters is not mine, I know. Stop rubbing it in.
It is inevitable of course. With Kevin now working for Robert, there is a big chance this would happen and eventually it does. It is the Friday-night that Scotty comes to pick Kevin up for dinner and a musical. It is also the week where Robert talks Jason into taking ONE night off of his work and have dinner with him,… say Friday-night? And Jason reluctantly agrees.
And so they run into each other for the first time since their awkward dinner.
“Jason.” Scotty states, a neutral smile that doesn’t encourage Jason, nor offends him.
“Scotty.” Jason nods.
“Here to see Robert?” Scotty’s question is gentle, but the underlying question registers with Jason.
“Yes. I avoid Kevin and he avoids me. I was told that Kevin would most probably be gone by now. Considering you usually work on Friday nights and he joins you at the restaurant?”
“It’s my Friday night off.” Scotty replies.
“Oh, I see. Me too… That’s why… the dinner with Robert.” Jason needlessly explains.
“Dinner? Nice. Which restaurant are you going to?” Scotty asks politely.
“I don’t know yet. It’s Robert‘s turn to chose.... And you and Kevin?”
“Probably something Japanese. And then to see a musical.”
“Oh, which one?” Jason asks curious. As Scotty show him the tickets, Jason cannot help but whistle in appreciation.
“It is said to be the best one in years. Better than “Wicked” and I would love for Kevin to get over that one, because it’s turning into …..”
“An obsession?” Jason wonders.
“Yes, that would be a good description.” Scotty laughs.
“He’s totally possessed when it comes to Wicked.” Jason remembers and with a grin Scotty looks up at him.
“Do you think I could get a discount from your church for having him exorcised?
“No.” Jason replies decidedly. “Not really. I mean, getting rid of Satan is one thing. Freeing someone of ‘Wicked’...? Whole different ballgame.” He jokes and now they both laugh.
Scotty’s phone is the first to ring… Seconds later it is Jason’s. They give each other a quick look.
“Care to guess?” Scotty asks. Jason shakes his head and picks up his own phone.
“Sweetie, I’m so sorry.” Scotty listens as Kevin gently starts to explain …..
“So, you understand, Jason, that Kevin and I are sort of stuck here now, and I cannot make it on time?” Robert’s voice is incredibly apologetic and Jason sighs, it’s always the same thing.
“Well, there went my evening.” Scotty grumpily says as he puts his phone back in his pocket. Jason nods. “Robert stood you up too, huh?”
“Yes, well, they are together, so it was expected.” Jason shrugs annoyed.
“What will you do?” Scotty asks.
“Go back to my place, start writing my sermon for Sunday, order something or maybe just grab a sandwich…. You?”
“Don’t know yet….” He plays with the tickets in his coat pocket. Wondering if…. “Would you like to go with me? Dinner? Musical?” He asks quickly. Jason gives him a look of disbelief.
“Me?” Stupid question. There’s no one else in the room.
“Yes. Why not?... Listen I know it is a bit … unusual. With Kevin and such, but we are both brothers-in-law to Kitty and we cannot keep avoiding each other. The child they may adopt will be a niece or nephew to both you and Kevin. It would be ridiculous for us to keep pretending that the other one doesn’t exist.”
Jason can see the logic in this. And considering that Robert can’t be here and Kevin either and Scotty already has tickets, why should he not simply enjoy the evening? There are no strings attached… And the musical is supposed to be very good. And for once he would like to discuss a topic with others rather than say, that he hadn’t seen it yet.
“Alright.” He accepts Scotty’s offer with a smile.
