***** Part 4/4 *****
“What did the dentist have to say?” Max asks, when he sees Dave enter.
“Not much. Thomas Walker hadn’t been in his office for nearly 10 years. He was the kind of guy who believed in ‘if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it’. So unless his teeth really hurt, he wouldn’t make an appointment.”
“So, he can’t help us?”
“Guess, we’ll have to go for DNA then.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to… but it seems that way… Now I have to tell Kevin…”
“Didn’t you tell him why you needed the name of the dentist?”
“I told him I needed to do some background research…”
“So, what will you tell them now?”
“I don’t know yet. I’m not ready to tell the truth either….” Max says softly.
“He’s wrong. And so are you.” Kitty hears and she opens her eyes.
“What? ... Robert?”
“I didn’t come to see you, because of Kevin. I came to warn you from making a mistake that will have a huge impact on your life if you don’t stop now...”
“I know, Robert.”
“And I didn’t come earlier, because you’re one of the strongest women I know. I don’t have tell you anything about how to take care of Evan or Grace. Or anyone else. And I want you to be happy and if you’re happy with Seth…?”
“Then I’m happy for you… I love you, Kitty Walker.”
“And I love you, Robert McCallister…” She closes her eyes, a smile on her face. The same smile that is still there, when Seth comes to see her 10 minutes later and finds her in a deep sleep.
Scotty puts aside the last of the carrots. ‘
“Boss? Told me to warn you when your husband came in? Kevin just went upstairs.”
“Thank you, Luis. Guys, continue your work here. Get everything ready. I’ll be upstairs in case of an emergency.” He puts away his apron and he climbs up the stairs to find Kevin.
Kevin paces up and down.
“Hey.” He greets Scotty, when Scotty enters, but he doesn’t approach to kiss him or anything. Scotty closes the door and leans against it.
“We need to talk.” Scotty starts.
“Where are the kids? You were supposed to pick them up. Please, don’t tell me you forgot.”
“Mom and dad are taking care of them.” Scotty answers.
“Good…, because I need to talk to you…”
“Listen. We talked about this whole business with Elizabeth and I get you fear and your worries. Honestly, I do. I’m not playing down the impact that all the recent changes have had on us.
I’m completely aware that household exploded from 2 to 6 persons in several months and that our house isn’t equipped for that… I’m just as tired of fighting over the bathroom as you are….”
“However… Please, let me finish, I promise I won’t go all lawyer on you and I’m not going to throw a fuss, but I want to ask if you can find it in your heart to reconsider sending Elizabeth to my mom?”
“I know. I know. I promised I’d accept your decision, but I have to be honest about who I am. And I’m not someone who will turn his back on someone, when I think that he or she needs me. I didn’t do that with dad. Or Ojai Foods. With Sarah. Her divorce and her issues. I’ve defended Justin where I could.
I backed up Robert, even when I didn’t agree with him. I’ve stood by Kitty and her stupid campaign, no matter what. I’ve negotiated my way through their possible divorce. ….. And, for what it’s worth, I’ve always believed in you
…. I love you, Scotty, I love you more than you’ll ever know… but …
…if I had to give up on Elizabeth … I’d be lying to myself… I couldn’t live with myself… and I know what I said to you, that I would stop if you asked me to… And I will. I will, if you really insist…
But it will break my heart and I will never be able to understand what excuse there could possibly be, that you can sincerely and honestly look at me… and yourself… and agree that it’s alright to turn you back on that little girl. And… I’d be terribly disappointed, because you wouldn’t be the man I thought you were.”
“I know I make this sound like some ultimatum, but it’s not.. I can’t imagine a life without you…”
“… But I’ve reached a point, where I can’t imagine a life without her anymore either…
“Kevin, … !!”
“It’s like having to chose between evils and I don’t know what to do and mfhmf…” Kevin gets silenced by Scotty’s lips almost smashing into his.
The kiss is hard, but not uncaring and for a few seconds Kevin’s hands just flap about, until they find their way up Scotty’s back. Scotty slowly breaks the kiss, taking Kevin’s face between his hands. He places another tender kiss on Kevin’s lips, before he manages to get his voice back.
“Kevin. Shut. Up.” He says softly and gently. “Would you just…. Shut. Up…. And let me say something?” He sees how Kevin swallows away some probably smart-ass reply and Kevin nods dumbly. Scotty laughs, gives Kevin another kiss and lets his thumbs rub away the tears on Kevin’s face.
“I love you, Kevin, and when you asked me to stand by you, that night at your mom’s, I didn’t hesitate. I hated it how they tried to corner you and how they didn’t listen to you. I was so angry and I was so sure of the fact that you were right…. And then I got to stop and think of the consequences and I suddenly panicked.
Your mom, your sisters… they are part of the umbrella of people in our lives. We help them. They help us. I love them. I thought they loved us. I felt confused by their stubbornness. I felt like everything would fall apart if we’d lose them… But, you know what? It won’t fall apart. I won’t let
it fall apart.
Elizabeth has become a part of our family. I love her. She’s your niece… Daughter… I don’t know, how to look at her sometimes… but I do
know that, like you, I can no longer imagine this family without her and I believe that she needs to stay with us. I want you to proceed with the case… Even if that means fighting your mom and everyone else.”
“Really?” Kevin asks flabbergasted.
“Yes. And this time, it’s my
choice and not something done out of loyalty to you, but because I agree with myself on this.”
“I have no idea what you mean, but…. I don’t care!” Kevin takes Scotty in his arms and kisses him.
They’re still lost in their kiss when the door opens and they hear Mateo tease:
“Are you two at it again? Don’t you have a bedroom, or something?” Believing that only Mateo has entered, Kevin lets go of Scotty, but he steels a few more kisses, until Scotty breaks free from the kiss, with a shocked nod at the door.
Kevin now sees that Mateo also brought Wally, Bertha and kids home. Bertha is visibly shocked and Kevin and Scotty give each other an uncomfortable glance.
“Bertha, Wally, you’re back…”
“Here are the kids…” Wally grins.
“Were you two kissing again?” Olivia turns to Bertha and confides to her. “They always do that when they think we’re not looking, but we know they do.” She winks at Elizabeth, who manages to make a smile appear on her face. When he sees that Elizabeth’s smile doesn’t quite reach her eyes, Scotty starts to feel very guilty.
“Elizabeth? Can we talk to you?” She approaches them carefully and sits down on a chair.
“Do I have to leave tonight?” She asks quietly. Scotty shakes his head. The question is still in her eyes though.
“You won’t have to leave at all.” Scotty says. Olivia begins to smile.
“Elizabeth, I owe you an apology. Kevin never wanted you to leave. He would fight for you, no matter what. But I… I got a little scared…. And I told Kevin to stop fighting… And I hurt Kevin … And I hurt you… and I’m very, very
sorry about that.”
“So? I can stay?” Elizabeth clearly doesn’t dare to hope for a positive reaction.
“Yes. You can stay. If the judge will allow it, you’ll stay here a long time.”
“Yes!” Elizabeth jumps up to run to Kevin and she hugs him so tightly that he can barely breathe. Olivia dances through the room and even Daniel, sitting on Wally’s arm, can’t sit still. Wally laughs out loud at the happiness in the room and even Bertha thaws out again.
Scotty sees how she moves away from the cheer and stays a bit at the side. He crosses the room and takes her arm.
“Mom? Thank you.”
“Everything. I know it cannot have been easy to tell me the truth this afternoon about you and Wesley. I’m not sure how I feel about that, … I still don’t feel that you were right about what you did… but I’m glad you me pushed into admitting that things weren’t going as I wanted. I was going along with Kevin’s plans for all the wrong reasons…”
“I didn’t want you to make the same mistakes I made. I didn’t want you to be bitter over a choice that, you feel, was put upon you… even if it’s the most logical choice to make.”
“Like you did when you married dad, though you didn’t love him? Or kept me when you didn’t want me?”
Bertha shakes her head.
“As I said, I made mistakes, bad choices and, for a long time, I felt like I was the victim. Things happened to me… But that was not true about everything. I chose to hurt Wesley, Like I chose to sleep with Wally. I chose to keep you. I had other options. I didn’t take them.”
“Well, I’m grateful for that…”
“So, you won’t send me
“No.” Scotty shakes his head.
“Can I then ask you for a favor?”
“Of course.” Scotty answers.
“Would it be possible to get me a room at the June Flower. I thought I was mature enough to stay with your dad, but.. I’ve discovered that I would prefer some space between us after all.”
“I’ll take care of it.” Scotty promises.
“Good, now go to your husband and be happy with him.” Bertha smiles. From across the room she can see Wally look at her and there’s something in his eyes that she has never seen before. He seems to be almost… proud of her?
“Anything?” Dave asks.
“No. Sorry. Can’t reach either Kevin or Scotty. I’ll keep trying though.” Max sighs.
“Well, if you don’t mind. I’m going home.”
“Good night.” Max tries Kevin’s number again, but there’s still no reply.
