It seems so simple, you know, what helps you stay of the drugs? Justin knows the answer. His family. Of course, they are also a good reason for picking up his habit again. He’s been here in rehab for a while now and everybody has dropped in and thrown their problems at his feet… He sighs, turning a small tape round and round between his fingers. Lying on his back on the bed he can afford to relax and review what happened this afternoon.
Of course it is only logical that if you put 5 Walkers and someone married to a Walker in room, all hell would break lose, especially with all the tensions brewing between them. Justin had watched it with envy. He had watched Kevin and Kitty tearing into each other, Tommy and Nora fighting and Sarah and Joe arguing… And he sighs, the only one who has stopped looking at him as if he were still a child was Tommy. Tommy makes him responsible for his own action. His father had tried to do the same.
Nora had been her lovable self. He loves his mother, without a doubt, but sometimes he wishes she wasn’t so intense. It was a stupid move to put Nora and Holly in one office. It was a stupid move of Nora’s to return to Ojai in the first place. She should have let Sarah and Tommy handle Holly. She should have backed off.
And maybe Sarah and Joe should bring Gabe with them next time they visit. So Gabe can see what happens to people who lose control. Someone like his uncle Justin. A failure at everything he does in his life. Although, he chuckles, this almost paradise-like place would probably give Gabe the wrong idea. Use drugs and end up here… No, maybe they shouldn’t bring Gabe after all. He can always talk to Gabe once he gets out of here.
And though he understands how Kevin feels about McCallister, it doesn’t give him the right to tell his sister what she should do with her life. It’s not like Kevin didn’t know her viewpoints before. If Kevin really wants to do something about gay-marriage he should try to get Scotty back and try to see if he can make that work to a point where he can marry the guy, for Kevin sure was more fun when he still had Scotty.
Justin notices the difference. Of course he has no right to tell Kevin about his relationships. Look at how he himself majorly failed with Tyler.. He had a great girl, he was clean for a while and happy and he ruined it all.
Around and around the little tape goes. He’s had since he was in Afghanistan. His mother talking about his family. He could imagine her and his siblings. He could imagine their lives and it gave him a reason to fight for them, because he loved them and he wanted to protect them from all evil. This was his little straw to hang to with both hands. And as it helped him get through the fight in Afghanistan, it would help him get through his fight with drugs…
